25.01.2022 First composed as a photograph, delicately framing the subject with wave-like folds of fabric, and then developed with careful colour harmony and soft graduation techniques, this week's Artwork of the Week by Year 8 student, Lara Koekoek, shows wonderful observation and sensitivity for the preciousness of her subject.
24.01.2022 The 2020 virtual Gala ConcertOde to Joyhas seen Grammar girls innovate and adapt to a new form of music delivery. For the first time since the Gala Concert's inception in 1996, the concert will feature all Instrumental Music students. 24.01.2022 Earlier this month, Grammar woman and longtime Guide Dogs Queensland supporter, Joyce Dempsey (1937), celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by guide dog puppies. As one of the School's oldest alumnae, Joyce has long been associated with BGGS. In an interview with Girls Grammar in 2012 she said, 'the School has given me so much in my life and I hope the young women continue to have magical experiences there in the future.' Happy Belated Birthday, Joyce.
23.01.2022 Last week, Girls Grammar celebrated a modified version of the School's Interhouse Choir Competition. Perhaps one of the most spirited competitions in the School's history, Grammar girls danced and sung their hearts out with House pride on the line. Highlights included Gibson's beach themed costumes, Mackay's rendition of Taylor Swifts' 'Love Story', and England's creative dance moves. Congratulations to all girls on their wonderful performances!
23.01.2022 Congratulations to Anna Butler, Johanna Conomos, Sandra Jiang, Zoe Pearson and Abigail Woodcock on placing ninth at the Queensland FIRST Tech Challenge Regional Robotics competition last weekend. The team also won the Bechtel Engineering Motivate Award to secure a place in the National Robotics finals in December. Well done, girls.
23.01.2022 Grammar Woman and Artist, Jennifer Fawckner (1987), says her career stemmed from her creative childhood. As a student at BGGS, Jenie was always interest in the arts and completed a degree at Queensland College of Fine Arts after leaving school. 22.01.2022 Lucy Stirling (2010) was in her first year of secondary school at BGGS when she discovered and fell in love with climbing. Since 2010, Lucy has represented Australia in three World Youth Climbing Championships and more than 14 International Open World Cups, 3 World Championship Events and also The World Games in Poland in 2017. In 2013, she won the Oceanic Lead Championships in the Open A division. She has retained this title for 7 years and running. In 2014, Ms Stirling won her first Australian Lead National Championships in Open Female division, making her the highest ranked female lead competition climber in Australia at the time. In 2016, Ms Stirling also became Australian National Champion in the bouldering division. BGGS wishes Lucy all the best in her preparation to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

19.01.2022 Earlier this month, the BGGS Fathers Group attended a retreat at the School's Marrapatta Campus near Imbil. Our Grammar dads contributed to the facilities at the School's Outdoor Education Centre, building stools for our new nonagon that acts as an outdoor classroom. Thank you to everyone who attended.
19.01.2022 Congratulations to Grammar woman, Josephine Auer (2015), on being named UQ's Graduate of the Year. Jo graduated from a Bachelor of Advanced Finance and Economics with Honours Class I and the University Medal in 2019. She maintained a GPA of 7 while training at an elite level in athletics, competing in the Commonwealth Games Trials for 1500m Track in Field in 2018. Currently a research assistant at UQ's School of Economics, Jo's focus is on environmental public policy projects. She is also studying a Bachelor of Mathematics in preparation to further her career with a PhD in Economics. Learn more about Jo and her achievements in the School's recent Grammar Graduate profile.
18.01.2022 After a successful season last year, BGGS alumna, Minna Atherton (2017), had her sights set on the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Now with the games postponed, Minna shares how she's maintaining her wellbeing and fitness, as she hopes to be a medal contender next year, should the games go ahead.
18.01.2022 Competition was fierce and spirits were high at yesterday's Interhouse Cross Country Carnival. Congratulations to OConnor House for winning the competition with a score of 280, closely followed by Gibson (276) and Lilley (261). Special mention to Year 7 student, Zoe McElwaine, for being named the School Cross Country Champion after completing the 2km course in an impressive time of 7 minutes and 13 seconds!

15.01.2022 The Recreational Space for Health and Physical Education in the new Science Learning Centre will be an excellent resource for all students. It will include an outdoor classroom, special sports flooring, and equipment for a range of sports such as basketball, netball and badminton. 15.01.2022 Girls Grammar celebrated the first day of Term with the opening of our stunning new Science building. Girls excitedly explored laboratories, classrooms and the inspiring staircase to the sky. An exciting next stage in Science education has begun.
15.01.2022 Last Term, Year 8 Visual Art students concentrated on the concept, 'Precious', using objects of personal significance. Girls initially explored a variety of painting and photography techniques before translating their ideas into acrylic paintings to highlight their precious objects.

12.01.2022 From electrical engineering and software development activities, to prosthetic mechanics and an online chat with a female field engineer, students gained fantastic insight into the current state of engineering in Australia and around the world thanks to the UQ Women in Engineering team that visited the School earlier this term.
12.01.2022 Happy National Science Week! BGGS is proud of its many alumnae who have pursued careers in Science and STEM. This year, as the Schools Science Learning Centre nears completion, we celebrate the work of alumna and Construction Manager for the project, Ms Cherise Czislowski (2002). ... Cherise took the skills and interests she developed at School into her career in Engineering. I was good at problem solving, I liked Math and Physics, but I was also quite creative I was trying to find something that would play to those strengths. I really loved being on site, being part of the building process, and learning to grow with each new role. Every job is different and has its challenges, but its a very rewarding careeryou meet new people, work in different industries, and learn a lot about the requirements of different peoples workplaces. 09.01.2022 As part of their Duke of Edinburgh service, Year 9 Grammar girls Charlotte King and Charlotte Russell prepared and packed more than 100 kits at Hands on Art and Substation Gallery for Queensland Child Protection Week's Shine a Light for Children Lantern Project. The kits have been distributed across Queensland for communities to shine their light on child protection during Child Protection Week, which is held from Sunday 6 September to Saturday 12 September.
09.01.2022 Congratulations to the BGGS Rowers for the School’s strongest result in the sport’s history, winning the Head of the River’s First and Second VIII races today! This is the first time BGGS has won these races. These are very well-deserved outcomes for the rowers, who have given their all this season. Well done, girls.
09.01.2022 Earlier this year, BGGS Cross Country Coach, Mr Tim Franklin, designed and completed a number of creative fitness challenges to inspire positivity and encourage girls to challenge themselves physically. Mr Franklin ran a marathon in his apartment and conquered climbing 'Everest' by running his building's fire escape stairs 161 timesequating to a total of 35 000 stairs, simulating the elevation gain from Everest Base Camp to Everest Summit. Mr Franklin says having fun is an important part of exercising and he applies this philosophy to his coaching.

08.01.2022 Congratulations to Grammar girls, Charlotte Falting, Isabella Labagnara, and Lottie Levy, who have been selected for roles in Ballet Theatre Queenslands production of Cinderella. The girls will rehearse weekly, and complete some week-long intensive training during the holidays to prepare for the performances, which will be held from Wednesday 20 to Saturday 23 January 2021.Well done, girls!

07.01.2022 This week's Artwork of the Week, 'Progress', was created by Year 9 student, Devan Zhao. Shown as a point of light in darkness, the crumpled sheet music with its composition in progress is used as a representation of hope and curiosity in the search for understanding and expression. Devan uses the rich darks and lights of her charcoal media to extend her theme of light and hope within darkness. Well done, Devan.
06.01.2022 Yesterday, Year 12 girls were delighted to welcome Immediate Past Chair of the Board of Trustees, Ms Elizabeth Jameson (Head Girl, 1982), Lendlease's Construction Manager, Ms Cherise Czislowski (2002) and Head of Innovation, Ms Kate Nelson, and Vocalist and Composer, Ms Merinda Dias-Jayasinha (2014) as panellists to discuss Women in the Workplace. The panel was led by Year 12 students Lua Jarrah and Charlotte Zeljko, who were inspired by explorations of female agency in their English assessment. The girls asked questions about working in male-dominated industries, women uplifting women, and the importance of living an authentic life. The advice and wisdom of the panellists was welcomed by all as our Year 12 girls prepare to embark on their lives beyond Girls Grammar.
06.01.2022 Working from her drawing studies of a seed pod, Year 7 student Mia Neubecker simplified and stylised her image, developing it as a relief printing plate constructed of found materials. After printing, her works were further extended with the use of mixed media components, creating a series presented as a concertina book.

05.01.2022 This week, BGGS supported Homelessness Awareness Week, which commenced on Monday 3 August. The Schools Second Chance Committee have been busy raising awareness of, and seeking to end, homelessness in Australia. On Monday, Second Chance sold Homelessness Awareness Week badges, with all proceeds going to the Second Chance Programme Fund Raising Group Inc, which supports Brisbane women experiencing homelessness. An art installation was also set up in support of Homelessness Awareness Week. Students and staff showed their support by colouring in a brick on the installation.

05.01.2022 The exhibition, 'Two Sisters, A Singular Vision', opened on Saturday 18 July, celebrating the immeasurable contribution of Grammar Women, and sisters, Margaret Mittelheuser AM (1947) and Cathryn Mittelheuser AM (1949), to Queensland's cultural life. Generous patrons of education and the Arts, Margaret and Cathryn began supporting the Queensland Art Gallery in 1985, and this exhibition features a selection from their legacy of more than 100 works. The exhibition will be showing until Sunday 31 January.
04.01.2022 Today, our Year 12 girlswell prepared by their expert and dedicated teacherscommenced their Mock Examinations. The mock exams allow girls to experience the new style of senior assessment, and gain valuable feedback before their exams in October. BGGS is proud of the way in which our girls have embraced the new system with optimism and confidence.

Our Volleyball teams finished undefeated and we saw strong performances in Tennis, Netball and Hockey. Well done, girls!

03.01.2022 Throughout Term 2, Year 7 Visual Art students created sculptures inspired by the work of artist, Vera Moeller. Their works are underwater hybrids inspired by the reef and the creatures that inhabit such areas. Our Year 8 Visual Art Students studied the work of contemporary street artist, Ellis Gallagher. Responding to their own environments, students created a bright collection of chalk outlines surrounding shadows cast by objects, trees and buildings across the Schools Main Campus.
02.01.2022 While originally scheduled to be held at Queensland Performing Arts Centre, BGGS is delighted to share this year's virtual Gala ConcertOde to Joy, on Friday 9 October, as a special video production in lieu of the School's usual live performance. This years concertwhile playing homage to the 250th Anniversary of Ludwig van Beethovens birthcelebrates the joy of music, featuring stunning compositions that are triumphant, celebratory and festive. These images, taken throughout the filming process, provide a glimpse into what can be expected from this year's special concert.

01.01.2022 Last term while learning from home, Year 10 students engaged in a series of self-portrait tasks reflecting on the work of contemporary Australian artists. Responding to Tim Storriers work the Histrionic Wayfarer, Visual Art student Kiera Ryan first constructed and photographed a self-portrait figure using clothing and objects associated with her period of home learning. The posture and design of this figure was given further animation in a drawing exploiting the liquid qualities of her selected media
01.01.2022 Throughout the holidays, some of our Year 12 girls have enjoyed studying in the peaceful surrounds of the Mary Valley and at the School’s Main Campus, as part of Girls Grammar’s optional study retreats. The program was designed to support our students in their preparations for the external exam period in Term 4, providing girls with structure, routine and supervision. Girls participating in the Marrapatta Retreat have also enjoyed morning bike rides, camp fires, and movie nights when not studying with their friends.

01.01.2022 Girls Grammars celebration of Diversity Day spanned two days this year, with student forums, performances and activities held on Tuesday 18 and Wednesday 19 August. To complement the annual Diversity Day Forum, Listen, Learn and Act, which focussed on issues faced by marginalised groups, the School also celebrated the many different cultures our students bring to Girls Grammar. This was reflected by the 38 different country flags that were displayed above the Pool Lawn, and a special café menu with foods from the countries studied in the International Studies Faculty.
