23.01.2022 National Volunteer Week: 18-24 May 2020 To all the volunteers in the heritage sector of Greater Brisbane, BLHN says THANK YOU! Without you... - many historic collections would not be saved, cared for, and shared with the community - local historical societies would not exist - even the big libraries and museums rely on their volunteers to provide services that would otherwise not be fulfilled Three cheers for volunteers! We cant wait to visit your museums, galleries, archives, libraries and heritage sites again. But in the meantime, dear volunteers, keep safe.

21.01.2022 We at Brisbanes Living Heritage Network are lucky enough to represent a wealth of museums and heritage places dedicated to sharing Brisbanes military history stories told by passionate staff and volunteers. We encourage you to listen to Noel read correspondence from Rev. Dr Ernest Merrin...gton from the front line in World War One. 19.01.2022 This uniquely carved table was presented to Lady Baden-Powell (Chief Guide and wife of the founder of Scouting and Guiding) by the Village Council Chairman at Tatana Village, Papua New Guinea. Guides Qld had administered PNG Guiding for periods prior to it becoming independent and continued to train new leaders. Later, a special project to mark 1957 as a year of thanksgiving to the Founder of Scouting and Guiding was planned State-wide with money raised for Tatana Village b...y every Brownie and Guide in Qld. Water had to be carried from the mainland during the seven months of the dry season and the money helped them establish a sound water supply. The people of Tatana were amazed at the thought for their welfare by people they had never seen, and they presented this table as a gift for the Guides of Qld. Now proudly on display at the Girl Guide Archive, West Chermside, where you will find photographs of the presentation with the full story. https://buff.ly/2FnHM9W

19.01.2022 This is Rob Price, secretary of the Windsor & Districts Historical Society which has been operating out of the historic Windsor Council Chambers for over thirty years. Rob has Windsor in his blood. He grew up in Windsor, attended Windsor State School, married a Windsor girl, who also attended Windsor State School and was married in a Windsor Church! After retiring from a career in Pharmacy, Rob returned to the area and joined the society over ten years ago. His passion for th...e preservation of the history of the original shire/town of Windsor was shown when Rob volunteered to compile a book outlining the history of the Windsor State School. The volunteers of the society, over the many years, have collected a vast amount of documents, stories, memorabilia and photos, which are available for viewing and research, at the chambers. Rob encourages you to visit the chambers on a Sunday or Monday 1 4pm (or by appointment), when he and the other volunteers can show you around and attend to your enquiries. You may like to join the society and obtain extra benefits. https://buff.ly/33bsUnC See more

15.01.2022 Lest we forget.

15.01.2022 This judge’s wig belonged to Sir Samuel Walker Griffith a most distinguished Queenslander. Born in Wales in 1845, he died 100 ago on 9 August 1920 and planned celebrations of his many achievements in 2020 were sadly curtailed due to COVID. Griffith was distinguished in both legal and parliamentary fields. Admitted as a barrister to the Supreme Court of Qld in 1867, he rose to be the third Chief Justice of Queensland in 1893 and first Chief Justice of Australia in 1903. As wel...l as drafting the Criminal Code of Queensland during this period, he also served two terms as Premier of Queensland! On top of this he was directly involved in the drafting of the Australian Constitution prior to federation. A man of many hats indeed. His judge’s wig can be admired at the Commissariat Store Museum, 115 William Street, Brisbane, Tuesday - Friday. https://buff.ly/2Thxnk6

14.01.2022 Here we have a blacksmith’s anvil in use at the Samford Museum’s Blacksmiths Shop. Soon after the donation of this vital blacksmithing tool, a replica Blacksmith’s Shop was built in the museum grounds. The shop incorporates genuine slabs retrieved from local farm buildings. Building funds were raised by the local Rotaract group and construction was carried out by volunteer labour. Samford Museum ‘s blacksmith volunteers maintain the display. As the men tell visitors, blacksmithing was an essential business in any community as well as the place where local news was exchanged. A blacksmith demonstrates on the last Sunday of the month at the Samford Museum and occasionally at other times. Please contact Geoff 0417 610 983 prior to visiting to be sure you are not disappointed. https://buff.ly/34MRDQS

14.01.2022 Did you know that one of our member sites @lawlibraryqld not only provides legal professioinals and the community with access to legal information but it also preserves our legal history? The library's #rarebooks collections contains many significant legal texts such as 'The Corpus Iuris Civilis' or 'Body of Civil Law'. It is a collection of fundamental works in Roman jurisprudence, issued between 529 and 534 CE by Justinian I, Emperor of the Byzantine Empire. This work was h...ighly influential in the development of European legal thought and forms the basis of many Western legal systems in the common law world. While this #rarebook is kept safely tucked away in storage, the library has a diverse program of free exhibitions, lectures and tours that are open to everyone. 13.01.2022 Jill got bitten by the bug when she was researching the history of Lone Guiding. Lone Guiding was the section for Girl Guides who lived remotely or were expats relying on correspondence and School of the Air - hard to imagine these days with the Internet! Jill relates, I wanted a photo of the first Lone Commissioner. I used her last recorded address to search the electoral roll at the National Archive. Then I used the final reference as a date to check death notices at the... State Library and from there, I went to the State Archive for a will. On writing to the next of kin, I received a photo of the lady and I was hooked! Delving into the Qld State Guide Archives she saw a need for a database so before long was attached to the archives committee. Jill says, Since that time, I have developed skills, gained grants and endeavoured to build the Guide history and protect the collection and artefacts as best I can. I get great satisfaction in being able to answer a query or link information. Today my role as archivist has the title 'Archives Coordinator'. What do I want next? I need someone to continue the work. There are endless opportunities for volunteers to contribute their talents. https://buff.ly/3oneJ8r

13.01.2022 To wind up Law Week 2020, we continue our legal theme by visiting the Queensland Police Museum and unravelling two items chosen by Curator Lisa Jones for our latest episode of My Favourite Item: unravelling Brisbanes history piece by piece The items, which were donated by the family of Police Officer John Patrick Kearney, provided some valuable clues to help Lisa find out more about his short life. Kearney, described as a good, active man, attentive to his duty joined t...he Queensland Police Force (as it was known) almost 120 years ago in 1901. His young life ended tragically, but it took many years for his sacrifice to be recognised more widely. Want to know more. 09.01.2022 One of the most distinctive characteristics of Wolston Farmhouse is the sandstone used to construct its walls. Building of the farmhouse commenced in 1852 overlooking the Brisbane River at Wacol. Several sandstone quarries were in operation in the Goodna area around the time that Wolston was constructed. The deposits of sandstone in the area originated from the sand deposited along ancient riverbanks some 200 million years ago. The sandstone for Wolston may have come from Jos...hua Jeays Quarry. Other notable buildings still surviving today, built from sandstone from Jeays Quarry are Old Government House and Parliament House. Wolston is a rare example of a sandstone farmhouse close to Brisbane dating from the first decade of free settlement. It was the first property to be taken care of by the National Trust of Australia (Queensland). Open to visitors Sundays 10am 2pm https://buff.ly/2Zq6Jc5

08.01.2022 Here we have Suzanne Mulligan conducting an oral history interview with John Edwards. Suzanne is one of the dedicated volunteers with Oral History Queensland (OHQ). She has been a member of OHQ for about 25 years and a committee member for nearly 20 years. She is now the Communications Officer keeping OHQ members in touch with information about oral history with a monthly e-Bulletin, website and Facebook. She and other committee members organise workshops to teach people ho...w to do oral history. They are then encouraged to deposit those oral histories with the State Library of Queensland, so the stories are preserved. OHQ members enjoy sharing their expertise with other members. Oral histories have far-reaching uses including books, videos, podcasts, websites, and theatre. This is OHQ’s contribution to Queensland’s history. https://buff.ly/2UF2bM1

07.01.2022 Rugby League has always held a special place in many Queenslanders hearts. The playing of the 2020 State of Origin series may be up in the air, but lets go back in time to see how deep this connection to all things maroon played out in the Army during World War II - before the series as we know it now was even thought of! In episode 2 of the Podcast series My Favourite Item: unravelling Brisbanes history piece by piece we sit down with Trooper Nigel Cox, Army Museum Sou...th Queensland, who reveals the story behind one special piece of trench art that holds a prized place in the museumss collection. It was awarded as part of a competition designed to entertain Australian troops whilst they were waiting for ships (like the one in the image) to take them back home. The state-based game was even commentated and broadcast on radio station 9AC Torokina, Australian Army Amenities Service Broadcasting Station. Want to know more? 07.01.2022 ON THIS DAY International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingales birth. The worlds most famous of nurses, was born on this day exactly 200 years ago. To celebrate this milestone, WHO declared 2020 the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife. Florence changed societys ideas about nursing and her legacy remains strong today.... No one could have predicted that nurses around the world, during this year of planned celebration, would be working in a situation such as the one we find ourselves in. We thank and honour the members of the nursing profession today as they continue to uphold a standard of constantly improving health care that began with the work and writings of Florence Nightingale. The history and legacy of nursing in Brisbane is well-showcased: The Museum of Nursing History at the RBWH, The Diamantina Health Care Museum at the PA Hospital, and The Mater Archives and Heritage Centre. These museums are well worth a visit once restrictions are lifted and the dedicated museum volunteers and staff are ready to again open their doors. Find their details on our website https://blhn.org/places-to-visit/

06.01.2022 The building pictured is one of the few surviving Drill Halls that was built as part of the Kitchener plan for the defence of Australia. It was built in 1915 by the Queensland Works Department for the Federal Government and handed over in 1916. When the Dept of Defence sold the land at Sandgate where the Drill Hall stood, the building was sold and moved to the Chermside Heritage Precinct in 1999. The building is constructed of wood with a corrugated iron roof. Originally the ...building was a hall with 4 offices and one large double door entrance. Later one office was converted into an Armoury and a Quartermaster Storeroom was built internally at one end. After 1948 side doors and window grills were added. The drill hall is now home to the Milne Bay Memorial Library and Research Centre which can be visited by appointment. https://buff.ly/2DCafbM The Library and Research Centre is a Ninth Battalions Association Inc facility. The hall is usually used by 5 other groups each week - an Army Cadet Unit, a Day Club, a Water Colour Art group, a Karate class and a Concert Band.

05.01.2022 As the second oldest surviving building in Queensland, the Commissariat Store Museum brings the states early history to life. The two original storeys were built by convict hands, and it is one of the few remaining structures from the Moreton Bay Penal Settlement (1824-42). The ground floor was used as a colonial/government store from its construction in 1829 until the 1960s, while the first floor was used as accommodation. The museum contains rotating and permanent exhibitions with a wealth of information about Queenslands convict and colonial history. Located on William Street in the Brisbane CBD, it is operated by the Royal Historical Society of Queensland, and also houses the Welsby Library. https://buff.ly/3lRG55p

04.01.2022 By looking closely at this map it is evident that outsourcing the printing of Australian maps pre-WWII to Japan may not have been the good deal that it first seemed. This is a Japanese Naval Chart that is part of a set of charts captured by 7th Brigade at the Battle of Milne Bay, 25 Aug 7 Sept 1942. The full set includes not just Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands but also the entire Australian coast line, New Zealand, Southern Madagascar and South Africa. The Charts ...were donated to the Milne Bay Memorial Library and Research Centre by Major James Mahoney. He was the Brigade Major of 7th Brigade in 1942. The detail of the interior of Australia on the Chart contributed to fears of invasion of the Australian mainland. 03.01.2022 This is Grace Beecher who has recently turned 90 years old. (Our photo is of Grace as a twenty one year old young woman!) While Grace no longer has an active role with the Sandgate and District Historical Society and Museum, she still has a keen interest in the museum. Grace has been passionate about history and research for many decades. The Sandgate Historical Society appointed Grace as a researcher in 1986. Very few photographs were held at this time, but by appealing thro...ugh the local newspaper she was able to uncover many privately-owned images that are now iconic in our historical memories of Sandgate. Her research contributed thousands of hours of voluntary research, combing the State Archives, John Oxley Library and other sources for the Windsor, Nundah, and Chermside Historical Societies as well her local Sandgate society. https://buff.ly/3eztSz5 Grace was always generous in sharing her findings, providing copies of talks, research and photographs to individual families and institutions such as the State Library. For many years she wrote a history column in the local newspaper the Bayside Star and travelled to make presentations on the Centaur, the hospital ship sunk off Moreton Island in 1943. Interestingly Grace has never driven a car nor used a typewriter or computer, almost unimaginable to us now! The contributions of this unstoppable 90 year old continue through her producing a newsletter for fellow residents of her care home! This month the local community of Sandgate & districts is showing their appreciation for this extraordinary historical researcher by recognising and honouring her work with the installation of memorial plaques in Bracken Ridge and Sandgate. See also the article on Grace in the November 2020 issue of the "Sandgate Guide" https://buff.ly/2U1JWjy

The lecture will discuss Oodgeroo's in...fluence on Alexis, and others who shaped her artistic vision from the Aboriginal world and beyond. In posing the question, In times like these, what would Oodgeroo do? Alexis will consider the guidance that she herself would offer future writers - in times like these.
