20.01.2022 This is fantastic! Take a trip back in time and a trip down memory lane at the same time! So many great songs! Might have to dust off my Thriller LP and some of my 100% Hits cassettes over Christmas https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-rSdt0aFuw

20.01.2022 Wow, the interior of this one was a bit of a surprise (and I dont just mean the bright green paint!) There are some lovely surviving 1920s/30s details as well as c1950s upgrades. https://www.realestate.com.au/property-QPT-qld-DEPOT%20HILL McGrath Rockhampton & Capricorn Coast... 20.01.2022 Although unfortunately it is a result of some controversial demolitions, I am absolutely loving seeing a push for better protection of Australian Mid-Century Modern architecture. Yes, these homes are in Victoria, but let's hope this campaign helps raise the appreciation of ALL our MCM gems! https://www.theage.com.au//national-trust-slams-bayside-co National Trust of Australia Queensland National Trust of Australia (Victoria) The Age Beaumaris modern

17.01.2022 Oooh this sounds like it will be a fabulous exhibition for those of us who love Modernist architecture and/or art, especially the Bauhaus school of design!! It's at the Museum of Brisbane and although you do need to book, it's FREE!! https://www.museumofbrisbane.com.au/whats-on/bauhaus-now/

16.01.2022 This brought back memories for lots of people on my The House Detective page, so I thought I'd share it here as well, since it's of the right era!

12.01.2022 This makes me happy on so many levels. Of course the spectacular houses are completely drool-worthy, but also the comments RE the rise in demand for Mid-century Modern houses! https://www.realestate.com.au//surge-of-midcentury-moder/

11.01.2022 Im just going to put it out there, that I will probably prefer how the library looked here, compared to what it does now.... Look at those chairs for goodness sake!!!

05.01.2022 Who remembers visiting a Mater Prize Home as a family weekend outing as a kid? I was lucky enough to research Prize Home No.22 at Tarragindi as part of my Brisbane Retro project and have just added its fascinating story to my The House Detective website! The house is a complete time-capsule inside and the owner even still has the original Prize Home advertising flyer! But want to know the best thing? It's covered by the Brisbane City Council Heritage Overlay so hopefully it won't ever be demolished! In fact, the council seem to be listing a few great post-war houses and buildings lately, which makes me very happy!! https://www.housedetective.com.au/tarragindi

05.01.2022 The former Whitsunday Hotel (or "The Whit" if you ask the locals), opened in 1966 and was the fanciest of pantses place to stay for many years. It's been changed a bit, but the retro bones are still there!

04.01.2022 Oh the memories!

04.01.2022 What an incredible snapshot into life in Brisbane in 1964! Amazing! It features trams, Cloudland, City Hall, CBD streets and shops, clothing, houses, interiors, footy games and sexist stereotypes! It is Episode 1 of the Life in Australia series, which was made to "encourage immigration to Australia and to highlight the various social activities, employment and educational opportunities and lifestyles of the various cities and regional centres throughout Australia. This film ...shows an idyllic picture of life in the Queensland capital of Brisbane in the mid 1960s." I.e HEY EVERYONE, COME SEE HOW GREAT WE ARE! ;) Made by the Commonwealth Film Unit 1964. Directed by Robert Parker and now available in 4K HD. Film Australia Collection NFSA. NFSA - National Film and Sound Archive of Australia https://youtu.be/KbukeJZftOs

03.01.2022 To leave traces in the built environment is a very important way to develop a culturally sustainable society, rather than swiping the slate clean. Couldnt have said it better myself! Although this article relates to Melbourne, it is equally applicable to most capital cities. We are seeing increasing subdivision of blocks and the resultant demolition of post-war houses and I worry that eventually no evidence of this important era of our architectural history will survive. ...This was a major reason I started the Brisbane Retro project- to at least record some of them before theyre gone. Im not saying we need to keep every house or curb development completely, but I feel the infill development could be managed more effectively and sympathetically so that what makes our suburbs so great- like our streetscapes and generous back yards, are not entirely ruined. What are your thoughts? http://www.abc.net.au//post-war-australian-housin/11924116

03.01.2022 Holy moly! "The grandest Palm Springs has ever seen" is a MASSIVE call, being the Mid Century Modern mecca that it is, but it's certainly pretty impressive! The pink Mustang sealed the deal! https://www.dwell.com//650-east-tachevah-palms-springs-mid Dwell

01.01.2022 Mackay has so many great post-war and Modernist architectural gems, but this Karl Langer building was definitely one of my favourites!

01.01.2022 A Gabriel Poole designed house on 4.5 acres with THAT fireplace? Oh hell yes! https://www.realestate.com.au/property-QPT-qld-NAMBOUR-1327 Huge tip of the hat to Amber Werchon Property for appreciating the unique architectural gold they have here and not marketing it for its "demolition and/or development potential"! Yay! Love your work! Tristan Brown - Amber Werchon Property Leigh Martinuzzi - Amber Werchon Property
