21.01.2022 If you love a seedless watermelon please share this post! Queenslanders right across the state are suffering from what seems to be an everlas...ting heatwave. Before you begin to enjoy that sweet slice of cold watermelon take a moment to think about how it was produced. During the first few weeks after the melon crop was planted the grower called in a beekeeper to provide bees to pollinate his crop! Thousands of bee hives across the state have now made their way onto farms. Over the past few weeks our bees have been working hard to pollinate seedless watermelon crops that are growing right across the southern area of Queensland. Our State Secretary Jo visited local grower Jayson and Beekeeper Phil earlier in the week. Jayson is growing a huge number of melons which are appearing on supermarket shelves now and will continue to be available just in time for Christmas! The bees have working incredibly hard and were kind enough to pose for a few great photos. Next time you hear the crack of a watermelon being cut into, and taste the deliciousness that is a seedless watermelon thank a bee ! Thanks to Jayson and Phil for our great day out! Please share and spread our sweet work!

20.01.2022 The hive phorid fly, a pest of stingless bees in Australia, is very common at the moment. There are about 4,000 species of phorid flies on the planet. Their die...ts are varied. Some feed on organic detritus, some feed on fungi, others on living plants. Some are predators or parasites of insects and other invertebrates. The genus Pseudacteon has about 110 species and are parasitoids of ants. Pseudacteon reproduce by laying eggs in the thorax of the ant. A few have been released in the USA for biocontrol of fire ants. They have not been released in Australia for biocontrol of fire ants or for any other reason. Even if they were, they would not attack bee hives. They have a lifecycle entirely different to the pest of stingless bee hives in Australia which is called Dohrniphora trigonae. We call it the hive phorid fly and it is known to attack only nests of stingless bees. The current high numbers may be due to the weather or to an increase in people keeping hives and not disposing properly of hives killed phorid fly. We are not sure of the reason, but for sure it is not caused by biocontrol gone wrong, as has been claimed. See more

16.01.2022 Some photos of my supers with viewing windows. These were the first ones, I realised later that it would be better to do it on the side face, specially if you dont use foundation.

13.01.2022 Gotta save them goddamn bees.

13.01.2022 This is a rescued log from a fallen tree that split in half leaving the hive structure exposed. They have been doing well and I was surprised with the size of the brood and amount of bees. They started building scaffolding and pots straight away and its amazing the amount of work they have done in a few days. I saw the queen back in the box happy as can bee!

13.01.2022 This morning I collected this beauty of a swarm thanks to a fellow beekeeper from NSW that is spending a great time in the Gold Coast. Thank you Terry Inkson. They are now in my TBH.

13.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW THIS TREE KILLS NATIVE BEES? It may look very pretty, but it's flowers are toxic to native stingless bees. It is the African tulip tree, and is con...sidered to be a serious environmental weed. It's fast growing and it out-competes native vegetation. Biosecurity Queensland recommends that if you have one in your garden, you can help by removing it and then treat the stumps with herbicide. Biosecurity Queensland

12.01.2022 Raw and comb honey now available at Has Beans Café Brisbane. Thanks Dean and Min. https://www.facebook.com/HasBeansCafeBrisbane/

12.01.2022 Honey contains nearly 200 different substances, many of which are essential for the health of the colony. Simple sugar water contains two substances: sugar and water. Microscopy shows that bees fed sugar water have intestines that are shrivelled and dull in comparison with bees fed honey, whose intestines are plump and shiny. Of course, it suits beekeepers who are driven by the desire to maximise honey production to pretend that the honey removed from a colony can easily be replaced. It makes them feel better. But, sadly, it does not make the bees feel better.

12.01.2022 Following my last post, the water meter box bees have been rescued and are back at my place after staying a few weeks at my mates place as the original hive was to close too my place. I dont have many photos but they are building well and the queen is a nice looking lady.

09.01.2022 This is great news for bees, honey fans, and the planet.

09.01.2022 A small video of the ants having lunch. Sorry I didnt mentioned, this is in Malaysia.

09.01.2022 Fantastic example of collaboration between bees and other organisms, in this case the pseudo scorpion. Varroa treatments, small hive beetle insecticides, antibiotics and even sugar water destroy the balance within the hive just making life harder for the bees. Think about! https://www.facebook.com/media/set/

09.01.2022 I have an attaching swarm on my TC hive. I moved the original hive about 1.50 m away and placed a trap hive on the original location. They look interested enough on the trap hive but I can see a few still interested on the original hive. Should I move the original hive away or just keep an eye on it for now? Thanks.

08.01.2022 Last Saturday night I had a night out with these girls. Now they are safe at home! What is your experience with small swarms and what was the outcome? I gave these girls a frame with hatching brood, some eggs and stores to help them out a bit.

06.01.2022 Water meter box removal. So this is going to be my next job, these bees have been in this box for a couple of years. Initially they were using the top as entrance but someone tried to lift the lid and ended up lifting the box, now they are go under the box and sealed the top entrance. This is my first water meter box removal, so any advice/recommendations of what to expect and how to go about it, would be great. Thanks and have a nice scorching day!

05.01.2022 My girls this morning returning loaded with yellow pollen. Love it... The dark bee fanning the hive must have drifted from the hive next to it as these are Italians.

05.01.2022 Bait box at Carina Heights, it looks like they are moving in!

05.01.2022 While in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, I had a chance to see some of the local in action. Unfortunately no luck finding a hive.
