24.01.2022 BYS recently spoke to DHPW about the impact of Dignity First Funding View the full video: http://ow.ly/xRt550AY6lX Mobile phones provide an essential lifeline during the COVID-19 crisis, connecting vulnerable young people to social supports and important services, including youth services. Dignity First funding from the Department of Housing and Public Works helps us to stay digitally connected to at-risk young people through the provision of mobile phones and/or data.... As 20% of young people we see have no income, many are not in a position to purchase a mobile phone and/or data. This funding is a lifeline for many, particularly during the move to virtual service provision and limited face to face contact. #brisyouth #newfutures Read more about the funding here https://www.hpw.qld.gov.au/about/initiatives/dignity-first

23.01.2022 Young people, how has your experience of society shaped your perception of the police? If youre a QLD resident between 18-25yrs old, Griffith University wants to hear from you ! Young people are the group most likely to come into contact with the police, primarily due to their visibility and the amount they use public spaces. It is important for the police to gain the trust of young people and also for young people to feel that they can trust the police. Our experiences shap...e the way we experience and interpret things, so this survey aims to explore the connections between experiences, development and perceptions. 19.01.2022 Furnishing units of affordable housing in the BHC Creating Liveable Communities Cornwall St Project goes beyond the purchase of the furniture items. It means the creation of five homes, and an opportunity for young people who are assisted by BYS, to transition to independent housing early next year with the necessary supports in place to sustain their tenancies. Young people’s access to affordable accommodation assists them to break the cycle of homelessness, and creates a p...latform to engage with informal and formal supports, and to participate in meaningful employment, education and training. With the specialised assistance of BYS youth workers, young people have the opportunity to develop skills, confidence and self-esteem to achieve their individual goals and to create new futures. #NewFutures #BrisYouth #FurnishingYoungFutures Read more: https://bhcl.com.au/supporting-cornwall-street/

17.01.2022 Why the hummingbird? The Hummingbird Fable comes to the Commission from Nobel Peace Laureate, Wangari Maathai, who would often use the fable as an anecdote when recounting her environmental activism in Kenya and Africa. The fable illustrates how the smallest of contributions is important and like the hummingbird, we must do what we can. Wangari Maathai's story... One day a terrible fire broke out in a forest, and a huge woodlands was suddenly engulfed by a raging wild fire. Frightened, all the animals fled their homes and ran out of the forest. As they came to the edge of a stream they stopped to watch the fire, feeling very discouraged and powerless, and grieving the destruction of their homes. Every one of them thought there was nothing they could do about the fire - except for one little hummingbird. This particular hummingbird swooped into the stream and picked up a few drops of water, then flew into the forest and put them on the fire. Then it went back to the stream and did it again, and it kept going back, again and again and again. All the other animals watched in disbelief; some tried to discourage the hummingbird. Don’t bother. It’s too much. You’re too little. Your wings will burn. Your beak is too tiny. It’s only a drop. You can’t put out this fire. And as the animals stood around disparaging the little bird's efforts, the bird noticed how hopeless and forlorn they looked. Then one of the animals shouted out and challenged the hummingbird, asking in a mocking voice, what do you think you are doing? And the hummingbird, without wasting time or losing a beat, looked back and said, I am doing what I can. #HRM2020 #BrisYouth #NewFutures

17.01.2022 A fantastic, game-changing announcement from the Victorian Government, who have committed $5.3bn towards building 12,000 social housing homes including 2,000 new homes for people living with mental illness, 1,000 dwellings to support Indigenous Victorians and another 1,000 to support victims of family violence. We hope to see other State Governments follow suit, and include a specific commitment for young people. Young people aged 19-24 experience the highest rate of homele...ssness but are the smallest proportion (approx. 3%) of main tenants across all social housing programs. We must invest in social housing to provide hope and dignity for all Australians. https://www.theguardian.com//its-a-game-changer-victoria-c

04.01.2022 Yesterday afternoon we signed an innovative partnership with Brisbane Domestic Violence Service to address the increasing numbers of young people seeking support reporting domestic and family violence. (Repost from BDVS) According to the latest Annual Report from Brisbane Youth Service, young people who seek support from BYS report very high levels of violence in their lives... almost half experienced intimate partner violence, with 14 per cent identifying that they are cu...rrently in a violent relationship. The latest NCAS also found that, responses among young people to some questions indicate some areas of poor knowledge, relatively high endorsement of violence-supportive views and a low level of support for gender equality. This innovative partnership will see our two organisations come together in increasing access for young people under the age of 26, into specialist domestic and family violence supports. We are very excited for our Youth Domestic and Family Violence Specialist to make change in the lives of young people experiencing violence in their intimate partner and family relationships. If you need support for domestic or family violence, call BDVS anytime on 3217 2544.
