22.01.2022 Late lunch today - You can always count on a fresh and yummy bite in Southport CBD #southport #goodfood #ilovepho

22.01.2022 What happens if everyone has a Give Way or Stop sign at an intersection? In theory, no one can move and it causes problems so the State government changed the rules so these are no longer allowed. This was the problem at Meron and Lenneberg street. After analysing traffic movements, our trusty traffic engineers removed Stop signs from both approaches on Meron Street, giving priority along this route. ... So if you ever got stuck there before wondering who has right of way, I'm sure you'll appreciate the change.

21.01.2022 On Vietnam Veterans Day. A special thing to do is to find out about our local war heroes at our very own Southport Military Museum in Owen Park. Noel Wright (who is the key volunteer responsible for the museum) and I are pictured standing in front of his former Navy uniform. There are some amazing and rare treasures and stories captured here. It was my honour to follow the visit with the laying of a wreath at the service for our Vietnam Vets at our Southport RSL later this ...morning. Lest we forget.

20.01.2022 Feeling the heat? I can tell you the high school students at Benowa State High School certainly are. BSHS is a school that punches above its weight, and has grown significantly in student numbers with 2100 students next year (and for full disclosure, my daughter is one of them). Yet its sheltered and undercover space is not keeping up with the school's needs. ... Thank you to Principal Mark Rickard and Business Manager Michelle Black for inviting me to see their plans today and showing me the pressing need to enhance shelter for students. I will be formally supporting the school's application for sun shelter funding. Bizarrely, the school's P&C huge efforts over the past decade to aircon the school means Benowa SHS will now miss out on the huge state handout of funding. The financial allocation for air-conditioning available to all public schools in Queensland cannot be transferred for other sun protection investments for those who have made the huge commitment and effort to self finance air-conditioning classrooms.

20.01.2022 Wonderful efforts and lots of joy at Book Week Parade this morning. Happy Reading Bellevue Park!

20.01.2022 We have a promising step regarding the City Plan! Rather than the signed off amendments going straight to State for approval as was originally intended, the new councillors will now have an opportunity to speak on behalf of residents regarding the City Plan at the next planning committee meeting. This is an important step that we have been advocating for since taking office three months ago. ... Wish me luck. :) P.S. This photo was taken at one of the City Plan forums I held leading up to the election - when coming together as a group was not something one thought about. #connectingourcommunity #cherishChirnPark #lovetheladystreets

18.01.2022 Caught up again with Steve from 4CRB 89.3FM to take some questions from locals- a chat about the potential for a Federal Family Law court here and the expansion of public water transport via Hoppo to name a few topics. Have a listen below and tune in live later this month!

18.01.2022 I’ll be down on the corner of Regatta Parade & Skiff Street until 4pm to hear directly from you, come share your thoughts! #thisissouthport #wearegc

17.01.2022 It was a pleasure to speak at the Southport Chamber of Commerce Melbourne Cup breakfast this morning and give an update on our progress and future plans for the Southport CBD. Eight months in the job and I am pleased to say we are now at Stage 3 for the Southport CBD. Stage 1 - was ‘Clean and Safe CBD’. A sustained six months of disciplined effort , has resulted in reducing homelessness and anti-social behaviour. I am grateful to the Police and the Department of Housing for p...artnering with us on this. Stage 2 - addressed the Priority Development Area for Southport. The PDA planning scheme has exacerbated problems of land banking in Southport. At last council meeting, we voted to address this. I am committed we will have a planning framework that is flexible and enhances demand in the CBD. Stage 3 - Now we have the safety of the CBD stabilised and the PDA review underway, the real game changer projects of Stage 3 are my priority. This involves an unprecedented commitment from local, state and federal governments to our CBD. I'll keep you posted...

14.01.2022 The City has been working collaboratively with the responsible state government agencies (Department of Housing, Queensland Police Service) and Uniting Care in recent weeks to ensure that those experiencing homelessness in Carey Park get the support they need and a roof over their head. While most people sleeping rough in Carey Park jumped at the opportunity to move into accommodation, some initially resisted. I am pleased that all have now accepted the offer.... Residents should feel safe in our public spaces and people experiencing homelessness need to continue to receive the support they need.

14.01.2022 It was great to catch up with the Southport State School team last week to talk about some local issues. It is a beautiful and well-loved school. The old brick bus stop and some safety treatments for the carpark require attention and we are on to it now.

06.01.2022 DRIVE SAFE The ‘Drive Safe’ community speed awareness program is a key initiative of the Gold Coast Road Safety Plan and aims to create safer roads by focusing on the responsibilities of all road users. As part of this strategy, portable speed awareness devices (smiley face signs) are temporarily installed at locations across the city where speeding has been identified as an issue.... The presence of these devices has been shown to achieve a significant reduction in vehicle speeds in local streets and i'm pleased to let you know that they will be in place at the following locations from September to November: Johnston Street, Southport Racecourse Drive, Bundall Crombie Avenue, Bundall Anne Street, Southport *new location* Tongarra Street, Southport

06.01.2022 This time last week I was chatting with Steve from 4CRB 89.3FM and took some calls about Ridgeway TAFE, conserving koala habitat and our COVID-19 response. Have a listen below and tune in next month!

06.01.2022 Inspector Scott Knowles and criminology student, Sarah, met with me and safer communities Council officer, Rob today to discuss the latest research on dealing with visible homelessness. When we say Visible homeless we are referring to people who: - have anti-social behaviour on the streets, - are usually drug/alcohol dependent, ... - consistently refuse assistance, - when moved into housing often move back to the streets, - end up in emergency medical care as they do not seek medical treatment when required. Our current approach to helping these people is frankly extraordinarily expensive and miserably unsuccessful. Research shows, the cities and countries that have good results aim to 'eradicate' homelessness, not just 'manage' it. One such country is Finland. They took the unorthodox approach of 'Housing First, Treatment Second'. This is quite at odds with our current approach of you must be clean, separate from your street family, to stay in housing etc. This research suggests that we have a missing link in our current armoury to combat homelessness. Yes we have housing, yes we have rehab facilities, but for a certain group of visible homeless our traditional approach to delivering these services just won't work - they need to be moved into housing with their 'family' - their street family. Sarah will be presenting her research and findings on Southport visible homeless to QPS in October. Watch this space...

05.01.2022 RESURFACING BUTTERFLY COURT/SCENIC AVE, BENOWA The City has in place a detailed and comprehensive road monitoring system to rank road condition and Scenic Ave and Butterfly Court have been identified as being at the ideal stage to conduct cost effective resurfacing works. The planned maintenance works will ensure the condition of these streets and will have long lasting benefits for 15-20 years.... Works are scheduled to commence on Wednesday 26 August (today) and completion is expected by Friday 4 September, weather permitting.

04.01.2022 Build it and they will come. The growth in the Health and Knowledge Precinct is remarkable and we now have over 12,000 FTE jobs there. Hats off to those who had the vision 20 years ago. The State government opened up the roads and handed over the public space last year, so still early days, but the talent moving in is extraordinary. Hundreds of researchers in stem cell, vaccines, military technology... Just all amazing stuff happening right here. Thank you to Craig Rowsell for arranging the tour in the golf buggy. We have the right people paving the way, not least with Mario Pinto as the new Deputy Vice Chancellor responsible for strategy of the precinct. He has done it before in Canada and now ready to see Health & Knowledge precinct realise its potential.

04.01.2022 Get around the city on the Hopo! Hopo shows off the best of the Broadwater stopping at five iconic destinations. 04.01.2022 Tune in now to listen to a live update on the City Plan.

04.01.2022 Another action packed Council agenda today. If you are wondering what to do with the next 10 hours of your life you can always watch here http://council-live.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/ Examples of some of the matters we will be voting on: - Springbrook groundwater investigation - to make sure we maintain our environment and water security and that water bottling companies don't strip our environment. This investigation will lay the foundation for how we can assess groundwater impa...cts and determine compliance. Do you know the source of water can be identified by analysing plants? - clever stuff. - Freight Network plan - turns out our change in our shopping behaviour to buy online puts pressure on our roads and we need to plan for a future where there is more demand by freight on the system. - City Plan amendments - the scenario testing identified concerns with the height targets in the targeted growth areas (among other things). There are resolutions presented today to make sure we have a City Plan that serves our city and its residents. - New staffing policy for Councillors and the Mayor - this one is triggered by the state government changes to the local government act on how elected reps offices are staffed. So no big conspiracy here, just following State legislation along with every other council in the state. - Review of the Southport PDA (yay!). The transformation of our CBD will be a tortoise and the hare story. I am slowly but surely working on a daily basis to transform our CBD into a place you want to be. I am very excited about what it will look like in 5-10 years based on the weekly actions we are taking now. This PDA review, on how planning is shaped, is an important one which I was grateful to have unanimously supported at the Planning Committee. - Surfers Paradise old Grundy's site - I have read all letters sent in on this (as I read all concerns and objections sent to me). I know it is important we get this right. See more

02.01.2022 KOALA HABITAT PROTECTION This week, Council voted to take the necessary steps to compulsorily acquire a high priority property that will serve us well for the long term protection of the Gold Coast koala population. 02.01.2022 Congratulations Dr Dinesh! Dr Dinesh is the 2021 Queensland Australian of the Year, and here in Division 6. Thank you for your work and inspiration. As Sam O'Connor MP states, A massive congratulations to Dr Dinesh Palipana OAM from Griffith University and Gold Coast University Hospital - GCUH on being named the 2021 Queensland Australian of the Year ... I’ve had the privilege of catching up with Dinesh a few times. Here’s us a couple of months ago during Science Week at Cohort Innovation Space. Dinesh was the first quadriplegic medicine graduate and intern in Queensland. He had a serious car accident halfway through medical school where he suffered a spinal cord injury. At that point, most of us would have given up on finishing university. Not Dinesh. He worked tirelessly to recover and then finish the rest of his studies. Studying medicine is hard enough, let alone after going through an experience like this, but Dinesh stuck with it and made it to graduation. It took six months for him to find a position, the last out of his cohort to be hired, but he got a spot at our very own GCUH. He is now a senior resident there and the co-founder of Doctors with Disabilities Australia.

01.01.2022 This year’s message for R U OK? Day is ‘There’s more to say after R U OK?’. R U OK? Day encourages all of us to have regular, meaningful conversations to support anyone struggling with life’s ups and downs. It’s important that everyone feels they can talk about life’s ups and downs and access support if they need it.... So, R U OK?
