22.01.2022 I just want to say a massive thank you to my potting team for all your hard work! I am truly grateful for all your help. We work our fingers to the bone Tuesday to Thursday each week. So far we have re-potted 14,350 seedlings and grafts (photos 1-3). We have 5,650 to go (photo 4). From there we move to the outside of the greenhouse.

22.01.2022 And we are off!!! Re-potting with our new mix! Irma has this habit of hoarding...she calls it recycling. Kay is more scientific and subscribes to "never reuse your potting mix". So...we experiment. The important things remain: Meter #1 - pH. You want your pH to be between 6.5-7.5. We mix to a pH of 7. Too acidic or too alkaline and you will run into problems. Meter #2 - Moisture. If your mixture doesn't drain and dry fast enough, then you will have fungus problem...s including fungus gnats, fungus gnat larvae eating your plant and top rot from spores. Moisture is linked to soil structure too and you want there to be air spaces so the roots can breathe. Meter #3 - EC or Electrical Conductivity. The desirable range is 0.1 - 1.0 and relates to the amount of free nutrient that is in the soil. EC affects the plant's ability to drink water as water will travel along an electrical potential into the roots. As such too much nutrient or fertilizer in the soil will eventually kill the plant as they cannot drink and salts will form from the free nutrients burning the roots off. Everybody's soil needs are different as we grow in different conditions. Our greenhouse can trap humidity, drive the temperature up or down and auto above head rainstorm water. We have elected to hold a little more moisture in our new mix to reduce our rainwater needs but have still maintained a drain in the bottom of each pot. First scoop is Kay's winning mix of 30% potting mix and 70% decomposed forestry fines (5-20mm). Second scoop is Irma's winning drain mix which utilizes large bark and perlite sifted out of our old mix (Irma sees it as panning for gold....Kay thinks it is a waste of time! Ah Compromise!) Yes we are pedantic, but we are re-potting over 20 000 plants, and do-overs are not accommodated. Wish us luck!!!! And Patience....And Perseverance...and anything else you think will help. See more
