22.01.2022 EXTREME WINDS . Reported to be a once-in-a-decade severe weather event, right now ex-Cyclone Mangga continues to lash against a 3,000 kilometre stretch of the Western Australia coastline. . In May 1937 an article titled WINDS was published in Perths The Daily News and included some interesting facts:... In Perth the name for the summer wind is the FREMANTLE DOCTOR. During winter in Broome we have the SOUTH-EAST and in summer the cyclonic weather is referred to as COCK-EYED BOBS and WILLY-WILLIES. The hot summer north-west wind of South Australia is called the BRICKFIELDER and when blowing from the South is called the SOUTHERLY BUSTER. . Do you know how the names for these winds came about? . Thoughts are with our fellow West Australians during this extreme and dangerous weather event. May you be safe.

20.01.2022 ***Remembrance Day*** Lest We Forget**** Over 250 Broome men enlisted for WWI, which was effectively 95% of the available population, and a record for any town in Australia. Over 60 of these men did not return. This honour board, which was unveiled in 1917, had been displayed at the Road Board Hall for over fifty years. When it was found at the RSL it had suffered extensive borer damage. With support from the Broome Historical Society and a DVA's Saluting their Service grant the board underwent conservation treatment and is now on display in the Broome Museum. 19.01.2022 BROOME HISTORY MYSTERY HELP SOLVE THE MYSTERY . In 1903 an epidemic was spreading throughout the townsfolk of Broome. .... Within the 4th September 1903 edition of the Geraldton Advertiser, extracts of a Broome report by Mr Piggott MLA to authorities in Perth were published and included: An epidemic of dengue fever has been raging here for some time and, unfortunately, with a few fatal results. Dr Fraser, our acting RMO, has had his hands pretty full lately, having treated over 200 cases. . The Anglican Bishop of Perth, Bishop Riley, commented in a report on his North-West Tour in June and July of 1903: The spirit of Broome was not as buoyant as is its want, for two reasons. Firstly, the depressing news of a substantial fall in the price of pearl shell had just come to hand; and, secondly, nearly every man, woman, and child in the place had dengue fever. . A number of residents died including Alicia Smith, passing away on the 28th July at her Old Broome home located on the corner of Walcott and Louis Streets. Alicia Smith succumbed to complications that arose due to suffering from fever. It was just over a year after her marriage to Benjamin Smith, Broomes first public school teacher, Alicia Smiths funeral was held on the 29th July 1903. Her funeral was the first to be held at Broomes new Anglican Church and it was also noted that she was the first female to be buried at the Broome Cemetery. . Where the mystery lies, is in finding her grave site at the Broome Cemetery. The location of her burial plot is not noted, although Gazetted in 1890, the Broome Cemetery Burial Register does not commence until 1909. . Today, other grave sites from that same year are still standing including those of Robert Hawkes, James Walton and James Ronalds who was buried only three days before Alicia. . Have you seen Alicia Smiths grave? Please HELP US SOLVE THE MYSTERY of where Alicia was laid to rest. . In fact, should you come across any grave site dating prior to 1910, wed appreciate your assistance in contributing to the Broome Historical Society and Museums archives. Please take a photo of the grave site and headstone and either post your photos in the comments below or email them to us at [email protected]. . Thank you fellow Broome History Mystery detectives! . 18.01.2022 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FAMILIES . On this International Day of Families we remember one of Broomes pioneering families, the Kennedys. . The year was 1905 when Bert (Thomas Herbert) Kennedy arrived in Broome from Melbourne. It was a time when the pearling industry was booming and Broomes population was about six thousand. Bert was in the pearling business with his fleet of luggers and the secretary of the Pearlers Association for thirteen years. After World War II he st...arted Kennedy & Son, a general merchant store and shipping agent. . Upon the death of her parents, Nita (Isabell Margaret) Millar moved to Derby and lived with her Great Uncle and Aunt, Felix and Mary Edgar. Nita helped on their station and performed at many local concerts, singing and playing piano. . In 1910 Bert and Nita married in Broome and had six children, three boys and three girls. . #FamilyDay #InternationalDayOfFamilies See more

07.01.2022 ON THIS DAY in Broome, 16th May 1949, Kathleen Passaris was attacked by a shark while swimming at Jetty Beach. These days we know this area as Town Beach. . The shocking news swept across the State and was reported in every newspaper. Twenty-two year old Kathleen Passaris had been in Broome for three months, working as a typist at the Broome Meatworks. . At the time of the attack Kathleen and her friend Lily Maxwell were on their lunch break and decided to go for a swim at ...Jetty Beach. They were only in five foot of water when the shark attacked Kathleen, grabbing her left arm. . Lily held onto her and kept her from being pulled under by the shark. Leslie Pearce, a bank clerk, was on the beach and hearing the girls screams, he ran into the water and helped to stop the shark taking Kathleen into deeper water. . Kathleen lost her left arm in the attack. She was rushed to Broome Hospital and locals answered the urgent call to donate blood to help save Kathleens life. . The shark was hunted and killed. Kathleens arm was found inside the shark. . Only the year before in 1948 Kathleen Passaris was an entrant in the Miss Australia quest. Ironically, in her quest she was helping the Civilian Maimed and Limbless Association. The following year, she herself became a member of that same Association. . Lily Maxwell and Leslie Pearce were awarded the highest accolade for their heroism and presented with medallions from Australias Surf Life Saving Association. See more

07.01.2022 IMMORTALISED IN PLASTIC The final phase of creating replicas of Kimberley dinosaur tracks involves casting and painting. With the silicon moulds cleaned and se...t up (see previous post), two-part polyurethane resin is used to create the actual replica. Several layers are added, building up to a thickness of around 10 mm. The resin is strong and rigid, but still captures all the detail in the original moulds. The moulds are then peeled off to reveal a perfect replica of the real track as a negative relief. The edges of the resin cast are then cleaned up with a rotary drill. Colour tints can be added to the resin, but even a dark brown or grey cast still ends up looking very plasticky. So that the replicas look like the real thing, they are painted with several layers of different coloured pigments. To get the classic Pindan red that stains many of the rock platforms the tracks are preserved in we use, well Pindan. Ground up and with water added, the rich rusty red creates the perfect base colour for the Broome Sandstone. Several layers of browns, yellows, reds, greys, brownish yellows, yellowish reds, reddish browns and every colour in between are then added. We use sponges (collected from Dampier Peninsula beaches, no less) to get the desired effect. The final part of the paint job involves adding little details like limpets and chitons. The painting phase can take several days to get everything just right. All the hard work is then sealed in with a layer of clear varnish. The replicas are now ready to be revealed!

01.01.2022 ON THIS DAY - 14TH JULY 2019 Only twelve months ago a 6.6 magnitude earthquake in the Indian Ocean, 200km from the coast near Broome was felt from Darwin to Perth. In Broome the quake sounded like a freight train coming right through homes and properties. Paintings were shaken askew and everything rattled. Outside in driveways across town, cars violently rocked from side to side and boats parked on their trailers did the same.... Stores in Broome had items falling off shelving and some residents reported damage to their properties. Did you feel the quake? https://www.abc.net.au//earthquake-in-indian-oce/11308064 See more
