21.01.2022 This photo was taken on the verandah of Broome police station at the turn of last century. (present day Wings restaurant in the centre of China Town.) The air hose had been torn from the rear of this Heinke Divers Helmet. The diver fell victim to one of the many hazards that faced the intrepid hard hat divers of Broomes yesteryear, paying the ultimate price. In this case a whale had become entangled in the air line and fled in panic... Broome Historical walking Tours, running 5 days a week through the dry season.

20.01.2022 What an honour to guide Theo Dorman and his family back to the plane he was rescued from on March 3rd 1942. As a 6 year old Dutch refugee, he was one of the lucky survivors. Shot in the leg by a machine gun from an attacking Zero, while he clung to the burning plane, he was rescued after 45 minutes in the flaming waters of Roebuck bay, given a can of pineapple juice and reunited with his mother, who he thought hed lost... Today as the sun rose over Roebuck bay we walked out ...to the flying boat wrecks and we were immersed in the whole story, from beginning to end. He and I stood on the remains of the wing of the Catalina he last saw 77 years ago, as he leapt from the cockpit window. I cant explain the feeling of being there with him as he retold his incredible story through the pristine memory of a young boy and as he relived the events that have stayed with him to this day. Im still spinning with the magnitude of the event and I simply cant get my head around it. Once in a lifetime, a true honour... Thanks to the Abc and particularly Ben Collins for capturing the whole thing. See more

19.01.2022 B.H.W.T presents the story of Australias Dunkirk For anyone with a keen interest in History and a yearning to understand the story of the plane wrecks of Roebuck bay... The story behind the first Japanese air attack on Broome is a little known page in Australias history. An event that changed the face of Broome for ever, marking the end of the Java- Australia escape route and plunging Western Australia into World War 2 with devastating results. The truth was largely hidde...n from the Australian public... Fifteen flying boats, namely Catalina, Dornier and Short Empire planes were destroyed on that morning, taking an estimated 100 souls with them.. Most of these planes now lie in deeper water, but on a spring tide low, several wrecks lie exposed... The tour. 19.01.2022 In Broome the sands of time give up their story... The war is finished, the army leaves Broome. The Lend lease policy by the Americans is instigated. Around Australia the US army abandons or destroys thousands of military items. Catalina flying ships are towed out past Rottnest and sunk..., Guns, tanks, jeeps, ammo, in fact all manner of things from watches to Tommy guns were dumped or left. The stories and legends are incredible. Here in Broome, on a smaller scale the same thing happened. The place used as a dump is exposed on certain tides... Fresh from the sea, shown here are two 50 calibre machine gun bullets, one exploded, one in tact. The base of the exploded shell bares the id - 1941 and the manufacturer code of St Louise, USA... Learn the incredible story of ww2 in Broome. BHWT running 5 days a week

18.01.2022 A rare find! Thanks to Dan Balint. From the depths of the Roebuck mud! Look closely... While the case gins of the 1880/ 90 Broome Pearling era are rare, they do show up every now and again, however they are normally always made by AVAN HOBOKEN of Rotterdam The gin of choice in all the northern pearling fields. This Gin is rare, as its made by "V Hoytema, Holland" - 1850/60. Common enough in the Dutch colonies of Africa, but extremely rare in the pearling fields of Northern Australia! How did it end up in Broome? Discussion is open! BHWT starts this Easter, booking essential! #broomehistoricalwalkingtours #broomehistory #uniquekimberley #dutchcasegin #pigsnoutgin

13.01.2022 Big thumbs up to the 20 or so who made it out this morning to the 3 plane wrecks of the 15 that lie in Roebuck bay. Its an amazing story and one that should really be learned by anyone who comes here. This photo shows before and after of Dornier X~1 The pic is from our walking tour photo book and shows the X~1 at mooring on a lake in Java. It flew the evacuation on the Australia/Java route, ending its story here in Roebuck bay. From the tail of this plane, X~1s pilot ...Henk Hesslop fired the Browning machine guns at the attacking zeros, badly damaging at least one, which eventually crashed near Rotti island on its return to Timor. His returning fire also injured a pilot in another Zero, ultimately he abandoned his gun as the X~1 was crippled and was sinking at the tail. He dived in rescuing a boy on his way in, before he was picked up by a refuelling barge. He later said he would have drowned had he not been picked up. He hadnt slept for two days and the weight of the boy was sinking him. He made it that day, he was one of the lucky ones... See more

12.01.2022 The Cornelius. Probably one of Broomes most famous and longest lasting luggers. This pic taken in its working Broome life. It went on to have an amazing life before eventually returning to Broome, where it sadly met its end at Gantheum point... The beautiful story of the Cornelius post shell life is found on this page and as weve not permission from the author, I wont use any of the images, but the story and pictures are well worth the visit. Make a tea, take ten minutes out of your day and click the link, you wont be disappointed. https://nancyvada.me/sa/cornelius-a-broome-pearling-lugger/

11.01.2022 The wet season has brought Broomes yesteryear to the surface. A fresh storm water run off has made a deep trench in the mud on the Broome foreshore. A glance at the wall of the trench is a glimpse into history for the keen eye! Pictured, the remains of a .303 calibre military issue bullet casing. The location of the shell is one of the known areas that Australian Soldiers, stationed in Broome on March 3rd 1942, returned "Small arms fire" at the attacking Japanese Zeros. Is ...this a hastily ejected shell from a Lithgow/BSA .303 rifle of that day...? Or is it an earlier story....? The same location is approximately the area where deputised police constables fired shots at the advancing mob of the 3rd Broome race riot in 1920... Is this a spent cartridge from a Police issue Martini Henry .303 rifle... ?? Closer inspection of the bullet reveals the manufactured year; 1907 We will never know the truth, but theorising is the real treasure! BHWT, 5 days a week starting Easter. Come for a stroll back in time! See more

02.01.2022 A story in picture from the yesteryear of Broome... Picture taken of the subject, exactly as it lays in the mud of low tide Roebuck Bay.... At first glance, an oyster covered rock shaped like a dish. It is in fact a tobacco tin, Possibly lobbed from a lugger, as being an empty tin, or maybe lost overboard... The only thing that has survived is the contents, a single live .442 calibre bullet. The base still decipherable ~ "Eley, London" Most Master Pearlers had a revolver on b...oard, This brutal slug fitted the Webley service revolver and dates to as early as 1886. It would have had a kick like 10 mules... BHWT, running 5 days a week Book now! https://www.broomehistoricalwalkingtours.com/book-online See more
