21.01.2022 A TRIP TO THE TIP: Recently our Year 11 Children, Family and Community students went on an exciting adventure to the Broome Waste Management Facility (WMF). The students were explained how the facility operates and when asked what were some of the weirdest things they have ever received, they were surprised to learn it was a crocodile and a camel. The students were lead through the facility to understand all about the machines operating to process the waste and special licens...es required for the different materials collected. One of the main things the students learned is that landfill costs a lot of money and that wherever we can we should always try to recycle properly. In particular, the recent Cash for Cans program introduced to WA where you can collect 10c for every plastic bottle, can and certain glass drinking bottle handed back in. See more

20.01.2022 Our Year 11 Physical Education Studies students have recently been developing their skills and understanding of motor learning and coaching. This week, as part of their studies, students were required to plan, prepare and conduct a 45 minute training session on a sport of their choice to our lower school physical education classes. It was fantastic to see our students mixing so well together despite the age gap. We have some great coaches in the making at BSHS.

11.01.2022 Alongside the schools cultural team, the Science department has been steadily increasing its authentic embedding of Aboriginal Perspectives into the Western Australian Science Curriculum. Recently during National Science Week, three local cultural tour guides spoke on the topic of Chemical Reactions and how they relate to their cultural knowledge to our cohort of Year 10 students. Students participated in valuable rotations and were able to take part in several hands-on expe...riences. Thank you: Natalie Dean (from Nyamba Buru Yawuru); Robert Dann (Kimberley Cultural Adventures and operator of Bindam Mie products); Johani Mamid (Future Acts and Cultural Projects Support Coordinator at Nyamba Buru Yawuru, Croc Park Guide and owner/operator of Mabu Buru tours) and Bart Pigram (Narlijia Experiences) for sharing your life experiences, cultural knowledge and science perspectives within your fields of work. The Science department would like to welcome any community suggestions about furthering the embedding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into our Science Curriculum and can be contacted through the school or to [email protected]

09.01.2022 Our year 11 and 12 Outdoor Education students recently swapped their classrooms for our beautiful coastline when they took part in a hiking expedition north of Broome. Students had been researching, planning and preparing for the camp throughout the term and last week they put their skills to the test by walking from Quondong beach to Willie Creek over 3 days. Some soft sand, heavy dew and warmer weather certainly tested out our students but they persevered and we are pleased to say that they all performed exceptionally well. It was a fantastic camp with a great bunch of students. Well done to all those involved.

09.01.2022 The Year 11 English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EALD) students recently enjoyed another opportunity to cook something delicious from a different culture. Ms Linah Enosa taught the students (and staff) to cook damper in the style of Saibai Islanders from the Torres Strait. The recipe included coconut milk and sultanas, and the students did a fantastic job. Thank you for sharing your culture Ms Linah.

08.01.2022 Today we celebrated R U OK? Day. For many years now, this day here at school is dedicated to inspiring and empowering everyone to meaningfully connect with people around them and support anyone struggling with life. As such a variety of activities were enjoyed by our students during an extended recess. Thank you to all the staff involved and especially the external agencies that came along with their displays to help raise awareness of the assistance and support offered to young people in the local community. Our celebration was a wonderful reminder of our supportive culture here at school and the way we continue to help our students to feel well and strong in their hearts.

07.01.2022 Last week we were back in the gym celebrating success and giving students the opportunity to perform in front of their peers at our first split assembly in some time. Unfortunately we are unable to invite parents at this stage. Here is a small sample of our performances.

06.01.2022 More moments from a fantastic afternoon. @ Broome Senior High School

06.01.2022 Dear parents/carers Our first priority is ensuring our students are able to learn in a safe and secure environment. You will be aware of the recent incidents of violence in the Broome community that have affected our young people. I take this seriously and have employed an additional security presence at the school. I want to stress that having a security officer is about having another adult who will also look out for our childrens safety. Our students already have acc...ess to an outstanding student services team, including school psychologists and school chaplains, and we encourage our students to seek support and reassurance if they have any concerns. I will continue to update you daily this week in regards to ensuring our care for students. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me on 9195 3100. Kind regards, Mathew Burt Principal Broome Senior High School

04.01.2022 Year 7 students participating in both the Role Models Australia and Follow the Dream programs were recently rewarded for their positive progress here at school with a 2-day camping trip to the Crab Creek coastal area. The girls undertook several activities including throw netting; migratory bird watching; female cultural learning and mud crabbing/mud bathing. Follow the Dream coordinator, Tim Gray, who has participated in many camps, over many years commented: It was an absolute pleasure to spend time with such an enthusiastic and fun-loving group of female students.
