19.01.2022 Last night I spoke at an event in for Beyond blue. As I was sharing my experience with addiction, depression and suicide I noticed one guy in the audience was a bit fidgety, he would look at his phone, check messages. If I looked at him he looked away. I was a little annoyed by it, but I reminded myself that my story is uncomfortable to hear for some. ... Later on in evening that same man came and sat down opposite me. He was a salt of the earth type guy. Can I ask you a personal question? Sure thing I said His eyes started to tear up as he said Are you happy today? I looked him in the eyes, my own started to reflect his. For the first time in my life I am able to say yes. I do not feel like I need anything to make me feel happy, I just am He said Thats good, I only ask because my best mate, my brother-in-law took his own life 6 weeks ago. We don’t know why. I saw him 2 hours before, he was all good...... My heart broke in that moment for this man and his family. I listened, we shared a tear or two, I shared more than I normally would about where my head was at before my suicide attempts. I truely wish this was a rare experience for me but its not and whilst it knocks me about a bit I need to hear these stories. 16.01.2022 Last night we had our first meeting. Everyone shared what was happening with them and why they had come along. To have these strangers share so openly their troubles was so amazing. This meeting was just the first of many. It was the start of recovery for those that attended. ...
