25.01.2022 I was fortunate to attend the screening of the documentary "Maker" put on by Startup Tasmania this week. It was a fantastic film about how recent trends in technology have enabled regular people to design and manufacture their own products at home in low-volumes to perform the same kind of research and development that was previously only available to large companies. It's like a small return to the cottage industries of the pre-industrial revolution era, but without many of the limitations they faced. In the same way that the internet brought information to the masses, now we have things like 3D Printers, cheap CNC machines on eBay, Arduinos and Raspberry Pi's, and organisations like Kickstarter, Startup Tasmania and Hobart Hackerspace that are helping bring product design and manufacture back to the masses.

21.01.2022 Sometimes the best photographic accessories have nothing to do with cameras. For the Tasmanian Schools Triathlon Challenge last week, a postie bike was the secret weapon that let me cover the whole course with ease.

08.01.2022 I used to think Tasmania had cold winter until I visited Siberia. This is a photo I took near the Mongolia/Russia border on the trans-Siberian railway. For days we passed through a stunning snow-covered wilderness in the long northern twilight, punctuated only by the occasional village.
