22.01.2022 Arthur Kennedy Part 3 In 1918 World War 1 ended and Australia’s social landscape was forever changed. The war took away the nation’s innocence, and filled its people with sorrow and despair during and after the war. The cheerful enthusiasm and strong patriotism for King and country had been sorely tested, and for many would never be the same. The families of repatriated soldiers rejoiced at their homecoming, yet in time some would despair at the changed man who had returned t...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Bull in the chemist shop. In the early 1900’s the sight of stock being herded through Rochester’s main streets was not uncommon. Sales of cattle, sheep, pigs and horses were conducted at the saleyards behind the shire hall. Drovers and farmers from surrounding areas walked their animals into market, to and from farms and the train station, stock transport as we know it today had not yet evolved. Knowing that animals do not always go where you have planned, it is easy to under...Continue reading

18.01.2022 Arthur Kennedy Part 2 Continuing on from our last posting with the story of Arthur Kennedy. Sending troops to land from sea on hostile territory against a well- prepared enemy has rarely been attempted in military history. That the Anzacs gained a toehold at all on the Gallipoli peninsula is remarkable. That they repelled the Turkish attempt to drive them back into the sea is a testament to their bravery and determination....Continue reading

17.01.2022 Telegraph In the early days of the colony of NSW communication with Britain, the place that many settlers considered their homeland, could take years. Ships carrying letters between England and Sydney took up to 8 months one way and a reliable mail service was really only available to government officials. Formal postal services began in 1809, by the 1850’s the pressure to reach the goldfields as quickly as possible bought new, more efficient ships into service on the Britain...Continue reading

15.01.2022 Official turning on of the lights at the silos tonight. They look great.Thank you to the hard working committee and helpers that have brought this great asset to Rochester to fruition.

15.01.2022 The Christmas pudding In our land Down Under, with Christmas falling at the height of summer our 30-40+ temperatures are not always conducive to cooking a traditional hot meal for the Christmas celebratory lunch. Many families have abandoned the traditional cooked formal lunch in favour of menus more suited to our climate or reflective of our family’s favourites, traditions or cultural backgrounds. But one old British custom has and continues to survive- the Christmas Pudding...Continue reading

14.01.2022 Arthur Alexander Kennedy Part 1 Each of the names on the Rochester RSL honour roll has a story to tell, an important part in our pledge ‘Lest we forget’ is to chronicle and pass on these stories. Following on from the last posting we will tell the story of Arthur Alexander Kennedy. Arthurs Grandfather Dugald Kennedy (b. Argyll Scotland in 1830, d. Rochester 1907), had settled in Bonn in 1863. His parents Donald and Elizabeth (Harris) Kennedy married in 1884 at Corop West, the...Continue reading

13.01.2022 VP Day Victory in the Pacific day Saturday 15th August 2020 marks 75 years since the end of WW11. The date commemorates Japan’s acceptance of the Allied demand for unconditional surrender, ending the conflict that had lasted for almost 6 years. For Australians the war was finally over ending years of hardship, hard work, sacrifice and loss. ... There are still some surviving soldiers of this conflict, now men one hundred years old, but for countless numbers of us, the men that fought in WW11 were our fathers or grandfathers and unfortunately, they have already passed on. We remember them with love but also honour their bravery, resilience, and spirit of mateship, qualities as Australians we hope to always uphold. Close to a million Australians fought in WW11, on VP day we say thanks and honour their service, to those that didn’t return, Lest we forget. All official commemorations this year will be online and virtual, there will be an online ceremony hosted by RSL Victoria and the Shrine of Remembrance on their Facebook page at 11.20 am. Victorians can also access a digital exhibition Response, reflection and rejuvenation. Other interesting online exhibitions available, women work for victory in WW11, Imagining Centaur, and RAAF in the Royal Exhibition building, all available through vic.gov.au/world-war-2-75th-anniversary. Thanks Dad. JH

11.01.2022 Part 2 The Post Office In May 1863 a Post office opened in the vicinity of Sewards hotel Rochester (cnr High & Lowry sts). Mr J.G. Crisp was appointed the postmaster at an allowance of 10 pounds. The township of Rochester at this time, on the Eastern side of the Campaspe river consisted of a few scattered houses. Sewards hotel provided comfort for the passengers of the Cobb & Co coaches as they passed through on the stage from Bendigo to Echuca. The hotel was described as bei...Continue reading

11.01.2022 Telephones and the telephone exchange. The telephone emerged from the making and successive improvement of the electrical telegraph. Credit for the invention of the electric telephone is frequently disputed, Bourseul, Manzetti, Meucci, Reis, Bell and Gray have all been credited with the telephone’s invention. Alexander Graham Bell was however the first to patent the telephone as an apparatus for transmitting vocal or other sounds telegraphically. Bell made a call between tw...Continue reading

08.01.2022 RANDOM HOUSE Built in the 1860s, Random house was originally named "Nanneella". In 1886 W.T Webb added an extension to the house with bricks made from clay dug onsite. Purchased in 1956 by Mrs Ruby Wellman and her son Lloyd, who's wife named the house "Random house". After Ruby's death the property was sold to Bob & Lillian Keith who spent 2 years restoring the house and grounds. Len Keeper and Doug Hall purchased the property in 1984 and ran a very successful restaurant and... B&B. During this period Random house was known far and wide and was a wonderful drawcard for our area. Subsequent owners of Random house: 95'-97' Doug & Kate Robertin, 97'-2004 Yvonne Hiscock & Rod Franklin, 2004-2007 Chris & Julie Rourke. The department of Sustainability & Environment purchased Random house in 2007, renaming it as "Ngurelban" and was used as a healing centre of indigenous people. It has been very hard to watch the demise of this lovely property, most locals would have very happy memories of functions and very special events held here in its heyday. Now lets look to the future and fingers crossed, tomorrows auction sees this lovely old home and beautiful grounds start a new journey of healing. Returned to it’s rightful place as an asset of our town, its new owners restoring it to it's former glory, regaining it’s important status in the history of Rochester. Good Luck Random House!

05.01.2022 Good Luck to the Colbinabbin community as they takeover the Colbinabbin store and undertake it's transformation into the new Colbinabbin general store Co-Op. We are pleased to have been able to assist with the purchase of a used vehicle for the mail run and grateful of them shopping locally. We wish them every success in the future. BHM.

01.01.2022 Aviation and the start of World war 1 Part 1 Flight has intrigued man for countless centuries, dreams developed into realities in Australia when Lawrence Hargrave experimenting with box kites successfully lifted himself off the ground at Stanwell Park NSW on 12th November 1894. Rising 16 feet off the ground in a wind speed of 21mph, an invention that would be of great significance to those pioneers working toward powered flight (an engraving of L.
