08.01.2022 BSE Brisbane Slipways adds Winged Keel to Pangaea Ocean Explorer. Through out late May and early June the Pangea Ocean Explorer docked at BSE Brisbane Slipways for the installation of a new sensor platform or gondola, as it is commonly referred as. A gondola is a winged keel like structure that protrudes 1.2m below the keel and is designed to carry a range of scientific instruments for underwater research. The Pangaea was docked stern first on a custom built wedge which all...owed for clearance under the bow for the installation of the 11t research gondola and sensor package. The fabrication team went straight to work installing the transfer system and carrying out the hull modifications to allow the gondola to be moved seamlessly into position and lifted up to the hull. With the hull modifications completed the gondola was lifted up to the hull for final fitting, painting and the installation and calibration of the sensor equipment. Other significant work completed during the docking period included the water blasting, surface preparation and painting of the underwater hull.
