17.01.2022 Anyone up for the challenge ?

17.01.2022 The old Karate masters often warned against excessive strength. As a learner, your priority should be to master technique. Strength and power comes later. U...nfortunately, many Westerners use 100% force from the start. This physical overcompensation limits their development. Karate is not a work-out. Its a work-in! 16.01.2022 SEIUNCHIN BUNKAI This video shows a flow drill using the final move of Seiunchin. One person finishes the move, then the other person slaps the groin and rever...ses the scenario. . The video also discusses important aspects such as: Being speed focused on the back fist to elicit a flinch response. This gives us the moment to control their structure. Too many focus on power on the backfist, which will not have the desired effect. . And the importance of how and where we grab the back of the opponents head to best be able to control them. . Remember Seiunchin means to grab and pull (or control) in battle. We generally need to use a speedy slap, flick etc before we attempt to do this

16.01.2022 Without kata, most styles would be virtually the same a series of punching and kicking techniques. Kata represents the art or culture of a style providin...g a direct link to the past by studying the techniques and principles practiced by karates forefathers. By observing a styles Kata, one can also gain insight into some of a styles philosophies and, as a student practicing kata, become a moving breathing example of the art itself. In this way, kata almost becomes the signature of an art. In this article, Shihan Anthony Ryan explains some of the key reasons why Kata is an integral part of karate training.

08.01.2022 Life has thrown us a temporary curve ball, but that doesn't mean our health, fitness, self-defence skills or enjoyment of karate has to end. During this peculi...ar period, GKR Karate is bringing the dojo to you. Online classes for all grades and ages, covering all facets of training; and all classes are designed with limited space in mind. There is no reason why your skills and fitness can't continue to improve right now. It just requires a tiny bit of self-discipline on your part to get the ball rolling. And the beauty of self-discipline, is its only difficult for a few minutes, because after this, motivation to keep going kicks in.

06.01.2022 A lot of people ask me ... Kancho, how did you build GKR and expand beyond Adelaide the birthplace of GKR?" I have to say it wasnt easy and took lots of prodd...ing and poking, going down dead end streets and having to back up. After approximately 5 years since GKR Karate began there came a point in time in about 1988-89 when GKR was very successful in Adelaide, we probably had about 800 people training each week. I loved GKR Karate and the people in it so much that I wanted to spread it further than Adelaide, I had the rest of Australia in mind, and at that stage not international. I was concerned with how to to get people I could trust for honesty and all areas of trust especially when I wasnt there to give direct oversight and make sure things were being done the way I wanted. I also saw the potential for senior trusted sensei's to use my support financially and in every other way to get a leg up and then when they saw an opportunity leave GKR and elude to their prospective followers the idea they had something better to offer and start their own club and into the bargain even poach GKR students. I knew this type of dishonour sadly in the karate world does happen so it was a concern. Eventually of course I saw that was a risk worth taking. But still hadnt worked out the final plan. I was on a family holiday in Lismore visiting my brother in-law Steve and his family. Steve had previously trained under me in Gosford back in the 1960's and asked me a question, rather a long shot, but could he come to Adelaide to live for a number of years, learn GKR and then supported by me, build a branch of GKR in Brisbane. I said sounds like a good idea, knowing I could trust Steve and then the penny dropped and my brain worked a million miles an hour. Over the next week Steve changed his mind but I was on a new track of determination to expand GKR throughout Australia. I was so excited, I drove home from Lismore in one drive (1,900K's) the family asleep in the car. When I got home I was still awake and bright as a button, the family flaked out in their beds and I sat down for another few hours writing notes on how to expand outside of Adelaide. My logic was I would recruit anyone (ideally existing students) who wanted to make a full time career out of teaching GKR. They obviously would have to undergo a number of years training directly under me in Adelaide learning to do everything I was doing, ie teaching karate, the admin, recruiting new members amongst other things. They would be called Trainee Regional Managers. In order for them to be immersed full time into GKR and not be encumbered by having to have another job I designed their apprenticeship income to be earned by recruiting new members, at the same time giving them lots of time during the week to be fast tracked in their own karate skill and teaching skills and leadership in general. Before the 'TRM' concept dawned on me I struggled to have 2-3 full time karate salespeople who made a living recruiting members but with no where further to go as a career. Now the door was opened for karate enthusiasts to become Regional Managers in GKR and to earn a very substantial professional income way beyond what theyd earn as TRMs. Over the next few months I had about about 20 full time TRMs in Adelaide and our weekly attendances grew to in excess of 2,000. Early 1993 I opened up 4 regions in Sydney then Perth, Brisbane, this opened up Pandoras box, I eventually had all of Australia, New Zealand and the UK pumping with GKR enthusiasm. By 2003 we had 50,000 people per week training in GKR. It hasnt been without some heartache and supposedly loyal people showing their true colours, but the good has totally out weighed the bad. Right now GKR Karate is in the best shape its ever been in and I have to thank so many loyal students, many long term students, Zone and Regional Instructors in addition to Shihan Gavin Samin and Shihan Anthony Ryan of course. 02.01.2022 Hey Guys!! Today I have a blogpost for you on mindset. Specficially, what kata can teach us about mindset. One of my favourite things about being human is we ca...n take meaning from anywhere, anyone and anything to help us learn more about the world (As long as it's true). I have modelled alot of my personality on other people, places and things I have seen, heard and experienced. Enjoy See more

01.01.2022 When pious traditional karate people criticise GKR Karate the best response is no response. What are they going to do, take us to court, confront us personally ...and scream at us, walk into our dojo and abuse us to our students? Im sure all karate head instructors believe the way they do things is not only good but in most cases the best they can do. I also believe that most karate clubs believe there are other clubs that have a standard that is not as good as theirs. Im no different in that regard. However with my head down tail up busily involved in running my own club I dont get to see or hear about many other clubs, let alone judge their standard. Im sure if I invested the time in chasing down other clubs to observe and judge them Id find some I believe are substandard in various areas. But then what??!! I might look at your karate standard and disagree with it but equally, you might look at my karate standard and disagree with it, where do you go from there? We all want to live in the light, there are two ways to achieve it: 1. Turn on the light. 2. Chase away the darkness. Turning on the light is by far the better. Accentuate the positive rather than the negative. Another analogy might be churches, who is right or who is better, Catholic Methodist. C of E, Pentecostal, in principle they all follow the same Christian god, who can say one is better than the other. It is arrogance to say one is the real and best church in the same way its arrogance to say we are the best karate, Its ok to believe that you are doing the best you know how. I think what upsets the pious traditional karate instructor is the fact that GKR Karate aligns ourselves with traditional ways and history and primarily are very similar in that sense. These people would probably be happier if our club was called self-defence or was something like karate, even if in every way our actual training was as it is now, but we wore shorts and a T-Shirt, with no belt and no gradings, or if we did have a grading it was stripes on a shirt sleeve that were in letter order of: J I H G F E D C B A (J) being beginner and (A) being advanced, thatd throw them off the scent. Do these critics get mean on Taekwondo or Kung Fu clubs that do not meet their standards, NO because it doesnt threaten them, we threaten them because we truly align ourselves with traditional karate principles. Good Karate is about effective karate and fighting skill, combined with a philosophy of inner personal growth, so whether it be Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Boxing, Karate, Wrestling, Kick Boxing or Aikido they ought to criticise anything that doesnt suite them. I would argue that I would rather have a sensei with one years experience teaching karate who had rapport and was personable rather than a sensei with 20 years experience who was egotistical and was a poor people person. Who is the judge to say a person teaching karate with under 5 years experience is poor practise, what does poor practise mean? The evidence in GKR Karate is that sensei's under 5 years experience create great karate in their students. Karate is more than physical, Id contend that karate taught by a high grade sensei with many years experience who had a poor and negative attitude to any clubs that didnt seem to fit their self appointed standard would be imparting a low karate standard in terms of attitudes character and Karate-Do. 01.01.2022 While kata is regarded as the art form of karate, the original premise behind all kata is self-defense. Behind each technique lies multiple hidden self-defen...se applications. The application of the techniques within kata is known as Bunkai. In this article, Shihan Anthony Ryan explains in depth, the relationship between Kata and Bunkai.
