20.01.2022 Venerable Nissarano was unable to teach on the opening weekend at the 2018 Buddhist Summer School. Though we were very humbled and fortunate to at least have Ajahn teach on the Monday and Tuesday. Enjoy this passage below, of the first teaching by Ajahn. 18.01.2022 One of the many bits of wisdom shared at the 2018, Buddhist Summer School opening forum! 'I've learned over the years, that in fact the whole focus of the practice is life itself, that the object of practice is life and for me the practice of Buddhism is about a way, a method or a path of cultivating wisdom and wisdom is the opposite in nature to ignorance.' So it really strikes very deeply to me, this idea that life is the practice. When we come to have the opportunity to l...earn skills, we are just learning the practice. But life itself is the performance and this is the value of the retreat this weekend, we are picking up skills and we have practitioners all around us here today, of many different colours and taste and we have the opportunity to find what suits our own palate and we can maybe take these and take them back into our life and hack our own lives. The real meaning of hacking our own lives is to find ways and means of applying these skills in our lives and questioning in an intelligent kind of way. How I've been living my life, the patterns that have existed in my life and asking Is this how I want to keep going?. Because these patterns become habits and the habits become the character and the character becomes the persona and is this how I want to be? Ven Dr Buddharakkhita

10.01.2022 Lots of wisdom shared in the opening forum, in what set the tone for an outstanding and enriched 2018 Buddhist Summer School! Thanks to Ekai Korematsu Osho, Orgyen Chowang Rinpoche, Ven. Dr Buddharakkhita and Dr Gidi Ifergan. Also a deep appreciation goes out to all the volunteers and gratitude to the many participants who attended. The opening question was ' How can we best integrate teachings into our lives?' Over the coming weeks we will share some passages from the forum with you. If you are interested in acquiring any of the teachings given, please get in touch with the E-Vam Office. Thank you

10.01.2022 Ekai Korematsu Osho has been teaching at the Buddhist Summer School since the year 2000. Below is a glimpse into what he shared at the 2018 opening forum. 'As far as the zen tradition is concerned it's very simple actually. Take life as a practice. You don't need to think about it too much, philosophise, conceptualise. Take life as a practice and each and everything you do day to day is the practice, is the teaching of zen. Attention to the details. Day to day life all is ha...ppening, take a life itself as a practice, is the greatest teaching, holistic. When you say practice there is a conscious effort involved, fresh effort each time, so fresh experience coming and you yourself are changing, the environment is changing, when you bring fresh effort to that, you experience it. This moment!! Bring everything into the context of the reality of the moment, moment after moment, give your attention to the...yes....the practice isn't it, it's the life of the moment actually.' Ekai Korematsu Osho

08.01.2022 Start your New Year by immersing yourself in meditation, philosophy and yoga. With five speakers over four days. Tickets to the 35th Annual Buddhist Summer School, held at Maitripa Centre, Healesville are now on sale.

07.01.2022 It was such a honour to have Orgyen Chowang Rinpoche teach over the four days at the Buddhist Summer School. Contained in the passage below, is a taste of the wisdom that Rinpoche shared in the opening forum. "What is really dharmas meaning, it is to transform human life. I think it's like medicine. Medicine can cure your sickness, also can give you vitality, energy. That's really the job of medicine and also food. Similar, dharma is food of mind, also food of your energy, ...gives you vitality and also releases your negative thoughts and emotions. The problem right now is modern world is externally so developed, but internally people are stressed, people have more loneliness, anxiety, depression and many other forms of mental and emotional disturbance. But how do you really resolve these things? I think through meditation. Meditation is directive effect on the human mind, directive effect on your and my mind. Then one can transform their experience. Therefore, first I recommend any kind of meditation practice, whether Zen, or like Dzogchen, Theravada, mindful, Mahayana, really really tangible effective meditation practice. I think in my own experience that's important. If you do that and have real effective meditation practice then you can effect that any time, whether your sick or sad you can apply your meditation. " Orgyen Chowang Rinpoche

01.01.2022 It was wonderful and intriguing to have Dr Gidi Ifergan from Caulfield Monash University, share his breadth of experience and knowledge with the Buddhist Summer School. Read below for a sample! "What is happening is when I'm self honest actually I'm acknowledging, admitting, I recognise what's going on for me and for the other. Then all my defensive mechanism subside, I give away this kind of defence mechanisms, alertness also subsides and in this sense I become really intima...te with myself and with the other. In this sense of intimacy I'm actually expressing a deep human... my deep humanity, lets say. It helps us sustain the state of contemplation and can help us at the same time to relive us from habitual tendencies bit by bit, of course in the beginning with the, like you know, like a wave in the ocean that breaks into a rock in the middle of the ocean and breaks into the rock and takes the dry sand these are like habitual tendencies and latter on the waves of contemplation will arrive again and will dissolve the mud slowly slowly slowly, and then it will start hitting the rock and anytime it will meet the rock it will take something of it and in this way our habitual tendencies will dissolve more and more. So to sum it up the key is self honesty and with others." Dr Gidi Ifergan See more
