22.01.2022 Walking through the streets of Newtown gave me the chance to walk past a gentleman and his dog sitting on a blanket with a cap on the ground. He didn’t talk to anyone when they walked past, he just sat there and watched the world go by. We walked past and I turned to Phil and said I have to go back and talk to him, but first I need an atm. I don’t have any cash on me. I looked at the shop this person was sitting at, it was the Blue Dog Posters shop. Good, I’ll be able to find...Continue reading
21.01.2022 Last night i was in the city. It was cold. It was 5.30pm. People bee lining it for the fastest way home. Tucked away in the shadows, using building doorways as wind blocks were other people, hopeful and asking for a minute of someones time to say hello. A human connection. A smile. An acknowledgement that they are more than human street rats that make others walking by feel uncomfortable. I wasnt there on a Buddys Homeless Hounds mission. I was there on a family mission. But ...i realised that i cant choose when Buddy's homeless hounds business hours should be. Just like the homeless can't choose to catch a train and go home. There was a man sitting on the ground. No shoes. Jeans. Tshirt. Jumper. George is his name. I usually introduce myself and have a chat and see how i can help. But this was peak hour for George. If i sat with him, then his chances of any donations gets limited. Because you see, the people walking past don't feel so bad when another person who doesnt appear to be homeless is helping. So i looked at his cold bare feet, coloured by Sydneys paths and guessed his foot size. I went into the athletes foot first, closest footwear shop. They said i looked like a person on a mission and what could they do? I said can they point me to shoes at the lower end of the price range. (It's mid pay cycle for me, so i had to shop smart). If i had the money George would have a top end pair of footwear on right now. I told them a man outside had no shoes and i wanted to buy him some. They said the prices were quite high and directed me to another store that could possibly help. I found the store, i was frantic, I didnt want George to move on cause he was invisible to the passing crowd. I grabbed some thongs, scarf, beanie, thick thick socks and some food and drink. I ran back to where i saw him and he was still there. It's still peak hour. I can't diminish his chances of donations. I walk up to the side of him. Shake his hand and say "here's a couple of things for you. Good luck mate." He looks at me and smiles and says "bless you sweetheart." Bless me!!! He's sitting, being ignored, hungry, shoeless and he blesses me. What an amazing human, he's homeless but still manages to have love in his heart. I walk away now knowing what keeps him warm at night. His heart. This is all new to me Buddys Homeless hounds is an initiative to help pets of the homeless along with having conversations and making a human connection to the homeless people as well as some hygiene/sanitary/toiletry products. But I realised tonight that the homeless without pets are even more lonelier than the homeless with pets and I can't choose when a person like George comes along. So if you see a man with a pair of thongs with a thick pair of snow flake socks walking around in the city, that might be George. Stop and say hello! Thankyou George for your blessing. See more
