09.01.2022 Have you heard about Lorikeet Paralysis Syndrome (LPS)? It's a viral disease spreading through lorikeet populations in SEQ and northern NSW. The virus cannot ...be transferred to humans, but it causes a very slow and terrifying death for these beautiful little birds. From another notice board. Today I found a Lorikeet with categorey 4 LPS, lying helpless next to the pathway to UQ. This poor little guy would have had so many staff and students walk right past him. We waited together for 1.5 hrs whilst RSPCA came to pick him up. Once he warmed up he started to chirp and move around so I had more hope. There are carers and wildlife vets in SEQ rehabitating birds with LPS. They still don't know why this seasonal disease is so ramped this year. If you see a dopey Lorikeet on the ground, please call a carer, RSPCA or take it to the vet. It's not fair to leave them on the ground, potentially freeze to death or be eaten.
