25.01.2022 Cockroaches are disgusting to many, but how about this beauty I found whilst walking through the Snowy Mountains - a Green or Mountain cockroach

24.01.2022 Mosquitoes are one of the indicator species for global warming in that they can rapidly respond to changes in climate. In Australia the danger is the spread of disease carrying mosquitoes. In the Arctic (yes there are mosquitoes in the Arctic!), they are predicting a 50% increase in adult emergence if climate increases by 2oC. Pity the Caribou if that happens... http://bit.ly/1KoFNYn

18.01.2022 Its been a while, but back on deck with a tiny marvel. The Saharan Silver ant has to survive foraging in the desert in temperatures of 70oC without cooking itself. It's unique silver hairs both reflect heat (sunlight) and radiate excess heat from their body. Some learnings here for potential man made materials... http://bit.ly/1eGZSkh

13.01.2022 Not so beautiful, more weird..... here is a Mountain Katydid or Bush cricket we found on the same walk in the Snowys. They grow up to 5cm and the females have an amazing defense display - lifting those wrinkly forewings to expose a brightly coloured abdomen which she can inflate!

10.01.2022 When it comes to sex appeal, bigger is not always better!? Females of the burying beetle appear attracted to smaller males - as they get into less fights. As a result they can pair up quicker and get on down to business! http://bit.ly/1N6rZ5X

01.01.2022 I know most people tend to be scared of big insects.... but can a tiny insect be cute? Here's the smallest (free living) insect in the world - the feather wing beetle, measuring in at a "colossal" 0.325mm! http://bit.ly/1X2oo0C
