25.01.2022 I had to share these videos of kara’s kids butterfly. Their grandmother bought a caterpillar kit for them for Christmas. They released the butterfly recently and it flew off into their yard. They were sad but also happy to see it go. The next day it was still hanging around and when the kids held out their arms IT FLEW TO THEM and spent ages playing with them. Their grandma saw me at plant 4 and said ‘oh you didn’t tell me that they fly back to you’. I said ‘ummm generally speaking, they don’t.’ They have the videos to prove it though so I guess these guys are just butterfly whisperers?
25.01.2022 I know lots of my followers are big Professor Flint fans so here’s a treat for you xx
24.01.2022 I just want to send a big shout out and thanks to my dear friend Evie for volunteering at the last minute to accompany me and the bugs on our Ceduna odyssey. I first met Evie and her two younger sisters about 13 or so years ago at the inaugural Science Alive event at the show grounds. Myself and the Davies sisters bonded over a shared neurodiversity and a passion for science and nature and we’ve been firm friends ever since. This was Evie’s first trip away on her own and she was a brilliant travel companion and a fantastic volunteer.
23.01.2022 Every year I breed thousands of silkworms. It’s a LOT of work but I just love them. I dont have them for sale on my website because people who want them mostly want them to feed to things and (rightly or wrongly) I feel a bit weird about that. Long story short I’m also a spinner from way back and I’ve just posted on a spinners and weavers page to see if there is any interest in the gorgeous, coloured cocoons and it seems there is. Gee this makes me happy. Can someone please convince James that we need to spend 1000 dollars on a drum carder so I can process the silk? By my calculations it will only take about 10 years to make our money back
22.01.2022 So excited to be getting ready for Science Alive this weekend at the show ground. We’ll have bugs n slugs on display as well as a range of bug kits for sale. First in best bugged.
22.01.2022 Check out the mealworm pizza we served at our Feast Festival event ‘Buggered’ this afternoon at Plant 4 Bowden. Thanks to Circle Harvest for the edible bugs and Frank at Fun2seeya Pizzeria for the amazing pizzas. ‘The next big thing in food is small!’
20.01.2022 Job perks! Bugs n slugs on the road with Animals Anonymous, Nitro Nat, Professor Flint- Adventures in Palaeontology, Techspace Learning Inc aka The Science Collective.
19.01.2022 Here’s a thing. It’s always been clear to me that insects experience distress; call it what you will. Now the science is starting to back that up.
19.01.2022 Moths are vastly under rated by most people. Check out the breathtakingly beautiful, different colour forms in these helena gum moths (Austrocaligula helena). All that missing from this line up is a pink one and a grey one - both of which also occur.
18.01.2022 Come on down to Bower Cottages Community Centre at 10 am for Little Buggers Spooky Halloween Special. We'll be focusing on arachnids but I'll have a few other creepy things on hand. Find out about Bone Beetles and I'll show you how to re-house a cute, fluffy, tarantula.
18.01.2022 Here’s the petition to demand action from the premier. Please sign and share. Xx
17.01.2022 The beetles are packed and we are heading off to little buggers at Corromandel Community Center this morning. Can’t wait to bug you!
17.01.2022 STEM in schools with bugs. We have run a few projects like this in schools with fantastic results but I really think Mick Ingram might take out the prize with these enclosures made by students from up cycled items!
16.01.2022 Wow! Another long story short... I’ve been trying for so long to breed pie dish beetles and to actually get them to pupate. I set them up a bit differently a month or two ago in the hopes that I would have some success. The previous conversation with Amelia from the zoo reminded me (because she likes them too) that I need to check the larvae. And look!!! Adult pie dishes!!! So happy
15.01.2022 We are so excited about Little Buggers Club at Corromandel Community Center!!
13.01.2022 Check out this fab video the very talented Bec Lyons made about Little Buggers. She forgets to mention in the video that she actually does all the hard work lol. Thats because behind every little bugger there's a really clever bugger! Thanks Bec <3
12.01.2022 Little Buggers is back at Bower today at 10am! Looking forward to seeing everyone... it’s all about butterflies, moths and caterpillars!
12.01.2022 Packing the van and heading off to bug Ceduna for a few days! Can’t wait to hit the wide open road and see all the see’s, feel all the feels and hear all the hears. Whenever I go away Elvis the magpie flatly refuses to speak to me for some time after I return and will turn her back and ignore me in favour of James who never leaves her behind! The trials and tribulations of a bug lady!
11.01.2022 HELP! The future of the largest temperate stand of mangroves in the southern hemisphere is at stake and they NEED YOUR SUPPORT. To learn more about the dead mangroves at St Kilda and find out why this issue is so dear to my heart, please tune in to 891 ABC Adelaide tomorrow (tuesday 12 Jan) at 7.45am when I'll be speaking to Spence Denny about why mangroves matter. We'll be joined by SA's world renowned environmentalist, Dolphin researcher and former South Australian of the year, Dr Mike Bossley. Don't miss it - In the meantime here's a pic of me from 25 years ago. I still look the same; just fatter and older! XX #savethestkildamangroves
10.01.2022 Bug Lady Haiku #897 Sweet smell of mangroves Flowering Brings tears to my eyes #savestkildamangroves
07.01.2022 I am often asked if we accept volunteers... the short answer is Yes! We often have opportunities for volunteers to participate in a range of activities near and far. We travel all over the state delivering programs in schools, at community events like regional science fairs, country shows and field days. If you have an interest in invertebrate ecology and husbandry; are over the age of 17 and think you might enjoy sharing your passion with others from time to time, then becom...ing a bugsnslugs volunteer might be for you. You’ll receive all the instruction and training you need and have an opportunity to meet and engage with likeminded people. If this sounds like you then send a request to join the ‘bugs n slugs volunteers’ private group on Facebook. You can find out more and put your hand up for opportunities that appeal to you. (I’ve just started this group because it seems like an easier way to deal with queries, questions and coordination etc.) See more
07.01.2022 We’ll be at Tonsley along with our old mate Professor Flint!
05.01.2022 In Ceduna with The Science Collective and I met these two champions! Jack and Cody - great mates and bug lovers since primary school
02.01.2022 We are fortunate to be surrounded by lots of wonderful friends and a great community so, inspired by our friends at The Kindness Kombi and Sudu's Test Kitchen we've decided to keep spreading Kindness through our little part of the world. We know lots of people would love one of our butterflies but times are really tough. Keeping that in mind, we'd like to introduce our 'kindness chrysalis'. If you are an existing customer and you know someone who would appreciate this opportunity, the instructions are below xx
