02.01.2022 EPOC (ee-p-o-c)! No not the little furry creatures from starwars....they're an ee-w-o-k... EPOC stands for Excess Post Exercise Oxygen Consumption and its what occurs when the body uses energy to return to its normal homeostasis (baseline) following a workout. By definition EPOC is the amount of oxygen required to restore the body to its normal level of metabolic function following exercise.... So, as the body is using more oxygen after exercise than it was before exercise it is continuing to burn calories (in addition to those burned during the workout). Research is yet to provide definitive answers on how long EPOC lasts and how many calories are burned but currently the general consensus is that it can last up to 24hrs and burn anywhere from 50-200 calories. So, "what workouts should I be doing to get this afterburn?" I hear you say.....well, the greatest EPOC response is produced by higher intensity workouts and resistance training, as your body is further from its natural baseline and so has further to go to return to this. This means that any HIIT training such as intervals, tempo, circuit...as well as resistance training are ideal. Its worth also noting here that although a longer exercise session will produce more EPOC than a short one, intensity is the key!
