25.01.2022 Today as the Year Four students from Torquay College were leaving their school swimming lessons at Leisurelink in Waurn Ponds, another school group from the Lorne P - 12 college were arriving to begin their swim classes. In light of the push for compulsory swimming lessons for primary school aged children Australia wide and considering the thousands of primary students in the Surf Coast Shire - wouldnt it be great if we were able to offer a public aquatic centre closer to ho...me? Would save on all the transportation costs! #surfcoastpool #builditandwewillswim
24.01.2022 As the SCSs Groundswell this quarter announces to rate payers a new $13.5 million much needed stadium development for Torquay, we see a bit of traction in the local paper for the idea that the residents of Torquay still really want a pool for our amazing town. A Facebook poll by the Surf Coast Times indicated much favor for an aquatic centre over a train line. Two eloquent submissions from residents in the Letters to the Editor section also indicate the continuing support ...for a Surf Coast aquatic centre and highlight how the anomaly and mystery of community consultation for a pool is NOT applied to other multimillion dollar projects for the shire. Keep the dream alive #surfcoastpool #builditandwewillswim
24.01.2022 News just in!!! The federal Labor Party has made a pre-election promise of an additional $15 million dollars to fund a Surf Coast Pool!!! This brings the Labor partys pledges for this project to $25 million!! This exciting news is the most wonderful Christmas present for the Surf Coast Shire and all its residents who have dreamt of a public aquatic centre for many decades.... See todays Geelong Advertiser for the full story. #surfcoastpool #builditandwewillswim
24.01.2022 Looking forward to seeing the model put forward for a Surf Coast Pool. How great would it be to see the Surf Coast leading the way for economical, sustainable health and wellbeing facilities? https://www.communitynews.com.au//scarborough-beach-pool-/
24.01.2022 Works coming along with the redevelopment of the aquatic facility in Eltham. Great to see a Council committed to the health and wellbeing of their community. Cant wait to see the finished result.
22.01.2022 Over this summer holiday period many of our Surf Coast beaches - including Torquay and Jan Juc beach today - have been closed due to shark sightings. With Leisurelink swimming pool also closed for maintenance, options for the general public to keep cool in hot weather, relax in the water or continue aquatic training or rehabilitation are increasingly limited. If only we had a #surfcoastpool - it would undoubtedly be bustling with tourists and locals alike! #builditandwewillswim
20.01.2022 Movement at The Station!!!! This morning Matthew Guy committed $10million to build an Aquatic Centre if his team is in power after November 24. David Bell and Keith Baillie noted that with State and Federal support the Shire will be able to borrow to build the centre. ... We have been talking to Darren Cheeseman and expect to hear shortly what a Labor government would do. We also expect to be able to talk with Sarah Henderson and Libby Coker to assess what the potential Federal contribution would be. The mantra is 10/10/10. Thats millions of dollars, of course. This is a great, if grossly belated, start to the process of actually designing and building a facility. #surfcoastpool #builditandwewillswim
19.01.2022 Tomorrow afternoon at 4pm, council will meet to discuss the outcome of the latest feasibility study into an aquatic centre on the Surf Coast. We will be crossing our fingers and toes that they vote yes to option two. You can access a copy of the agenda and tune in to the meeting if you follow the link in the council post below... #builditandwewillswim #surfcoastpool
19.01.2022 As a community weve said it before, we dream of a #surfcoastpool! Weve signed petitions, hung out signs, pegged our bathers out, collected support of local businesses, completed submissions to draft budgets, put stickers on our cars! We now have another chance to let the Surf Coast Shire know that we still desire a public aquatic leisure centre on the Surf Coast.... Currently the Surf Coast Shire are asking for community contributions " to help Council develop priorities for our communities for the next four years. Your input will help shape our Plan for 2017-2021" Lets keep this issue on the agenda of our Council. A commitment in a strategic council document paves the way to open discussions at all levels of government and enables advocacy for funding for this much needed community asset. Lets tell them again that many of us would love a #surfcoastpool to benefit the health and wellbeing of our community for decades to come!! Please follow the link below and complete the online survey to register your desire for a #surfcoastpool http://www.surfcoastconversations.com.au/theplan Feel free to share our post! #builditandwewillswim
18.01.2022 Let the Surf Coast Times know that the Surf Coast still really really want an Aquatic Centre ... please Vote yes for a pool!!
18.01.2022 Here is the link to the live council meeting https://webcast.surfcoast.vic.gov.au/video.pho
18.01.2022 It will be interesting to see how the schools of the Surf Coast Shire tackle the logistics of integrating compulsory swimming lessons into the curriculum?
17.01.2022 Just letting you all know that there is a Council meeting next week (June 16th) where the findings of the latest and 4th aquatic facility feasibility study will be presented and hopefully acted upon. It will be streamed live, information regarding the meeting will be on the Council website on Friday June 12.
17.01.2022 What are our Surf Coast schools going to do at the start of the next school year with Waurn Ponds Leisurelink pool being closed from mid December until Mid to late March for maintenance! I doubt any of the schools swimming programmes will take place next year. Time for the State Government and Council to seriously consider our own aquatic complex. There will be new schools adding to student numbers and we have new State Government swimming requirements that schools have to meet along with the health and wellbeing of our growing population. One idea is to lobby our local parliamentary representatives both State & Federal to forgo the expensive rail link to Torquay and use some of this money to build a "State of the art" aquatic facility for the use by all of our population from newborns to the elderly.
16.01.2022 To say that the committee members of SCALCAG and long suffering #surfcoastpool supporters are excited with this weeks funding pledges is an understatement!! We are thrilled that an aquatic centre is back on the agenda and look forward to the journey ahead. We are however, wary of half measures. The experience of some aquatic centres, such as the Bellarine Aquatic Centre and the Eltham Leisure Centre (which SCS mayor David Bell, SCS CEO Keith Baillie, Colin Fowler, Michell...e Hemley and Dick Danckert visited in July) clearly says that to build a 25m pool is short sighted folly. Over-crowding and shortage of health, teaching and sports facilities will happen almost immediately. And with the Surf Coast brand as support - a 50m FINA approved pool is clearly the best way to maximise all benefits including high level competitive events. We look forward to creating a benchmark, environmentally friendly, innovative, inclusive, world class facility which is suitable and fitting for the Surf Coast. Let the planning begin! #surfcoastpool #builditandwewillswim
16.01.2022 Hi all, its been a while since our last post because nothing much has happened to warrant mentioning. But, it looks as though our Council are going to act on the $$$,s that were offered at the last election by both State and Federal governments. The figures were $12mill and $20mill which would make a significant financial benefit to Councils bottom line and go a long way to the construction costs of the aquatic centre. Fingers crossed that we get a commitment!
14.01.2022 Congratulations to the supporters of the Phillip Island Aquatic Centre and to the Bass Coast Council for reversing the decision of a previous council in order to speed up the progress of their aquatic centre. Great news for another coastal town just before Christmas
13.01.2022 Page 6 of the Age newspaper today tells us Corangamite is the most marginal Victorian seat in the forthcoming Federal election and has been allocated $12.6 million thus far. $13 million has already been promised to the seat of Dunckley for the Frankston regional aquatic centre. Apparently, we dont need an aquatic facility and it hasnt made the "priority list" of projects yet! Surf Coast times did a reader poll asking people to rate an aquatic centre or a railway station as a priority, 74% said POOL, 26% said station. Are we missing something here?
12.01.2022 Its been a long time since the swimming pool issue has made an appearance. Community support is still strong. Unfortunately the consultation processes of 2015 muddied the waters and misinformed and scared a shire of rate payers threatened with 20 year special charges and rate rises. Are we ready to jump in the deep end again ??
12.01.2022 Currently we are organising meetings with all political parties to discuss the funding of an aquatic centre here on the Surf coast. If we can get sufficient $$$$$$s from both state & federal sides then we can get Council to act. Being a regional marginal seat we think that we have a good chance to get a serious commitment of $$$$$$s from either party. We believe this time with 3 new schools opening and the fact that none of our locals schools can get sufficient pool time for the compulsory swimming classes in Geelong anymore warrants another push for an aquatic centre.
12.01.2022 Things have been very quiet lately because we hit a brick wall with the "Testing the waters" funding model and we have been waiting to see the results of the recent Council elections. I did however talk to several Councillors before the election kicked off and the response by all that I spoke with indicated they have been discussing a pool idea with City of Greater Geelong, a "Joint venture" of sorts. I doubt we will see anything come out of these discussions any time soon!! Thats about it for Pool news. Lets see whether we can get the newly elected Councillors to be anymore responsive, I doubt it.
09.01.2022 There will be a photo shoot tomorrow Monday at 8.30 am at the vacant block next to the Surf Coast Council building and we invite anyone interested in a Surf Coast aquatic centre to come along. During the recent Victorian election $10 mill was promised towards the pool and now we have another $15 mill available to cover the construction costs thanks to Libby Coker and John Erins, representatives from the pool committee will also be attending. When built this will be a great health and wellness asset for our entire community.
09.01.2022 Breaking News!!!!!! The Labor party have matched the Coalitions pledge of $10m for a Surf Coast Aquatic Centre. After 40 odd years of dreaming for a pool ... we are pinching ourselves!!! Build it and we will swim!!!... #surfcoastpool #builditandwewillswim
08.01.2022 Excited to see that after the first feasibility study in 2012 the works are well underway as Nillumbik Shire Council commences the aquatic redevelopment at Eltham Leisure Centre. With $6.8 million of State government funding to assist Council this project is now a reality for a small Council with almost zero population growth and an ageing demographic. This municipal facility is expected to attract over 900,000 visits annually and provide a Financial return to Council. Well done Nillumbik.
08.01.2022 A bit of information for you all, apparently Kangaroo flat near Bendigo has recently opened a new aquatic centre with a 50m indoor pool, a separate learn to swim pool, and a hydrotherapy pool, along with aqua play for the children, cafe, gym and community space all for $35mil! Just like what we require. Design and layout look great. Maybe we can borrow their design for ours?
08.01.2022 Meet the unsung victims of the sports rorts scandal...the Wympie Wombats!
08.01.2022 Congratulations Hume City Council - your new $35.5 million aquatic leisure centre looks amazing! With contributions from federal ($9m) and state ($3m) government, the council has been able to provide a magnificent facility with a 50 metre flexible water space, water slides, water play area, gym, steam room and spa. Something all the residents of the greater Craigieburn area will enjoy - in fact the centre has seen unprecedented demand for foundation memberships ... with over 1000 people signing up in the first four days memberships were offered! #keephoping #surfcoastpool #builditandwewillswim
07.01.2022 Check out this amazing new initiative from the City of Stirling in Perth, WA. An outdoor 25/50m pool right on the doorstep of renowned Scarborough Beach! Fantastic insight from council to provide an inclusive facility right in the hub of town for community connection, health, wellbeing, swimming lessons, fitness, recreation, sports clubs, schools, Lifesaving training and rehab from babies to the elderly. And get this.....in a town that has a beach and plenty of other pools ...near by! Well done City of Stirling http://instagram.com/scarboroughbeachpool
05.01.2022 What a fantastic facility ... anyone else been to the Bluewater Leisure Centre??
05.01.2022 To all our followers, dont get too excited about a new aquatic centre on the Surf Coast just yet. Even though theres substantial amounts of money being offered by both major parties at this election our Council is still not prepared to make a solid commitment at this time. The aquatic centre has not been added to their priority infrastructure list to date and it appears we will have to wait quite a bit longer!
03.01.2022 Does anybody else find it hard to believe its been FOUR years since we were cooking snags and gathering signatures in support of a #surfcoastpool!!?? Weve had budget submissions, surveys, task forces, council meetings, community forums and yet - despite all the support and hard work - have had little traction. For some in SCALCAG, the journey goes back even further than four years!... Keep up the dream Surf Coast - one day our vibrant, active community will have access to a public, easily accessible aquatic centre!
03.01.2022 Now is the time to tell all our local politicians who will be standing at the forthcoming Federal election that our population is growing quickly and we need our Surf Coast aquatic centre. New schools and the increase in population numbers almost demand it. Both of the main parties understand our need and are talking some serious money for this facility. It appears we are being promised funds from both State and Federal members. If the opportunity arises then let them know your thoughts
03.01.2022 With the pending election cycle for both State & Federal politics starting next year it would be timely to remind our local members (if you have the opportunity) to garner some funds for a Surf Coast pool . They will be hitting the election trail soon.
02.01.2022 For those who are interested I learned yesterday that the $10 & $20 million offers from both state and Federal governments has been rejected by the Surf Coast council. This means no aquatic centre will be built in the region any time soon. Councils decision has been made because of the current situation we are facing.
01.01.2022 "We are water people. We cling to the edge of the continent." Swimming pools are iconic. They form part of our childhood psyche. They provide a sense of community and togetherness. They encourage vibrant, cohesive interactions of all ages. They offer the chance to learn vital, life saving skills and promote a healthy life style. The local swimming pool is an Australian tradition and they are fun! Lets all remember that the Torquay community has been dreaming of a #surfcoastp...ool for over 4 decades. #builditandwewillswim
