24.01.2022 Congratulations to Nakadai Sensei, Doug and Sayaka san for representing the Bujinkan Dj on NHK Japanese National Television.

23.01.2022 Ankoku-tshi jutsu ( the art of seeing through darkness) I feel its important not to take this too literally. There are many other times and periods of darkness in life that requires focus to see more clearly and find a path forward. To see through to the light requires a determined and focused mind and heart. Often we must walk through periods of darkness to reach it. With a strong will and conviction, we can get closer to the light with every step. Its not the form... or how you do it, but the feeling and motivation behind your actions. The forms however are initially taught to invoke and condition a particular mindset,focus,and/or action until one can enter them at will. 22.01.2022 When Takamatsu Sensei passed away I had to switch to solo practice. The kind of lonely practice where you cant float in space is dangerous. This is due to the accumulation of your ways of thinking, common sense, knowledge, etc, sometimes it becomes a weight that prevents you from floating in space. What I teach now is a martial form born of the natural world. In other words, Im passing the strategies of Kyojitsu between eternal and magnificent light and shadow, manifested in space. This means this light is one of a kind that is impossible to physically or scientifically search. Through staying on the road this beam of light will light anyones heart. 22.01.2022 This is some brief footage of a scenario I directed with the fantastic help of Andrius Zaidovas and his dojo in Vilnius, Lithuania during my last visit. I have ...quickly and badly edited it together but, when we eventually finish the footage it will be edited and produced professionally. Unfortunately, even after a full day and night of filming we were unable to complete our goal. I hope that one day I can return and we will finish the clips while also showing the classical applications to show how ninjutsu is real and relevant for effective self defence in modern society. Many people believe the art of ninjutsu and many of it's movements/forms/kata are not relevant in todays society. If you just make a judgment based on the kata, than you are superficial and not understanding the naturalness and pragmatic execution of these movements once fully understood in mind, spirit and body. The kata are mere exercises that must be adapted and used in context. For example, please notice that the execution of the forward break fall in a self defence scenario was performed vertically when psuhed against a car, and not as usually practiced as one is pushed to the floor. In these simple changes the ninjutsu concept of Juppou Sesshou ( 10 directional negotiations ) is understood and appreciated. Ninjutsu is about going beyond the form. It is realising that each movement/technique can be used within context and with natural feeling as true means of assisting one to avoid dangerous situations. Hiding is very much a part of ninjutsu. People laugh at this, however, if one is natural and understands human instinct and fear, it is an important survival tool worth practicing. The basic Togakure ryu ninjutsu techniques of escaping the restraint of others is very applicable for todays society. People are abducted, pulled into cars, ally ways etc all the time. Again, if you are able to see the reality in the kata, than you are getting it ( in my opinion ). In the moment of real life self defence, it is not how it looks but whether the principles of taijutsu are used naturally and effectively. As Soke has said, "ninjutsu techniques are not meant to be viewed as strong or weak, but rather movements to bring one un or fortune ( good luck )." Yoko Aruki is the famous sideways walking of the ninja utilised to scan in all directions while using the hands freely to draw, throw,or prepare things whilst moving. The basic swinging of the arms is not for physical balance but to understand the balance of the upper and lower half of the body so one can still draw swords, throw shuriken, metsubushi, tetsubushi and prepare tools whilst maintaining vision in all directions. We have also seen how Ku no kata from the Gogyo was naturally utilised and made more effective by throwing the earth/dirt. In the Ten Chi Jin Ryaku no maki it states all technqiues must be understood iin jodan, chudan, and gedan levels ( high, middle and low/seated postures ) and in forms of natural self defence ( shizen goshinjutsu ). The techniques of ninjutsu are invisible when they are understood as being truly natural. Being natural is the secret to understand the true applications of this art. I hope this brief video will give people some food for thought as to how ninjutsu technique is extremely applicable and natural thus valuable for every day living and self defence. 22.01.2022 Nowadays, people are shallow and their resolution is not in earnest. They dislike the strenuous and love the easy from the time they are young. When they see something vaguely clever, they want to learn it right away; but if taught in the manner of the old ways, they think it not worth learning. Nowadays, the way is revealed by the instructor, the deepest principles are taught even to beginners, the end result is set right out in front, and the student is led along by the hand. Even with methods like these, students become bored and many of them quit. In this way, talking about principles takes the high seat, the men of old are considered inadequate, mastery becomes watered down, and students only make efforts in things that might have them climb to new heights. This is, again, the spirit of the times." Issai Chozanshi

21.01.2022 New prints hanging over our tea room. I especially like the one on the left. "Ichi no Tani Gassen".... This is a famous scene of which various artists have painted. The characters are Jiro Kumagai and Atsumori Taira. The Heike, who was suddenly attacked in the Battle of Ichinotani, panicked and fled toward the beach for the ship . Nagumi Kumagai, who had begun to approach the beach, headed for a warrior of one horse and opened his fan, and invited him back. Kumagai realized that the warrior was a beautiful boy with light makeup around the same age as his son. Kumagai thought of his own child and wanted to help the young warrior, but he took the head of the young warrior who cried and cried because allies approached him. The young warrior was Innocent Tayu Atsumori. After this, Naomi Kumagai, who was found to be Atsumori Taira by Wakamu through a head inspection, decided to go home and become a priest through sadness of the incident.

21.01.2022 Ankoku-tshi jutsu ( the art of seeing through darkness) I feel it’s important not to take this too literally. There are many other times and periods of darkness in life that requires focus to see more clearly and find a path forward. Death, disease, war and famine etc, are often considered times of darkness. To see through the darkness to the light requires a determined and focused mind and heart. Often we must persevere through periods of uncertainty and doubt to re...ach a destination of clarity and knowing. With a strong will and conviction, we can get closer to the light with every step but, it’s often not easy. We must be prepared to walk in a variety of ways and through, over or under numerous obstacles to reach a more positive, productive or happier place. Ultimately, it’s not the form or how you do it, but the feeling, reasoning, motivation and adaptability behind your actions. The forms however, are initially taught to invoke and condition a particular mindset,focus,and/or decisive action until one can enter them at will according to the context of the situation. There are multiple levels to our Budo. Everything we physically practice has deeper meanings and benefits beyond just fighting an opponent in a physical contest. Our practices teach rich and powerful life lessons to help us better acknowledge our existence and the environment in which we live. Budo is therefore a path toward constantly revealing or shedding new light on our lives so we can continue to walk straight and true so to stay on the right path - the path of seeing through the darkness. 21.01.2022 You are not punching them; it is your going into kamae that punches them. Masaaki Hatsumi

21.01.2022 There is the constant debate whether people are practicing correctly according to tradition and/or if their instructor is following their own way or that of their teachers. Its quite immature actually. I think many people are becoming to narrowly focused on what is correct and what isnt. In turn, you can see that their movement is becoming stiff, regimented, stagnant, and predictable. A balanced approach is key. We can see this clearly with Soke and Shihan who have been abl...e to move beyond the forms. Dont misinterpret my words here. Form and kata is important, but with the wrong mindset and focus, people are becoming enslaved by them. I feel that many people will be captured by this approach for their entire life, hiding behind the words that I have yet to master the Kihon. It comes down to Sainou Shin Ki or, the talent/skill,spirit/heart/mind, and capacity of the exponent. Ultimately, in the grand scheme of things, I feel it must be realised that the only correct technique is the one that saves your life. If you follow and believe everything without a mind of discernment and flexibility, the very techniques and art that you think is correct, may not work for you. Its not the art though, its the approach of the practitioner. The capacity to go beyond form and move naturally is quite difficult for many. Again, it depends on the individual and how they are able to capture the feeling of the martial arts demonstrated and taught before them. Everyone is different and thus we have many understandings of our art that we can all learn from to help find a balance in our perspective and training. I feel its vital not to get imprisoned by your art. Im constantly trying to maintain a balance in my martial arts training to ensure openness and freedom is maintained in all aspects. Whats important in my view is to remember the words of Soke. if you do something and it saves your life, than it was good Taijutsu. See more

With a full class and support of her family, she was challenged by l...eading the class in our drills,Sanshin no Kata and rolling. She then demonstrated the Kihon Happou and eight variations on Ganseki Nage. She performed Koku and Renyo Kata from Gyokko Ryu plus Gohou and Ura Gohou Kata from Kukishinden Ryu Bojutsu. Rachael then led the class with Te ho Doki ( wrist releases )before her certificate presentation. My sincere thanks to Ben,Alex and Veronica for supporting and assisting. This girl has tackled the new and challenging with open fascination and newfound abilities, and continued to deepen her interest and mastery in things like Budo and music. Congrats on being awarded Second Dan, Rachael. Thank you to Duncan Stewart for delivering the richness of Bujinkan with artful humanity; we are unbelievably lucky to have you.

14.01.2022 On Bunbu ryoudo By Master Toshitsugu Takamatsu To use the literary and Martial arts for the nation means to prepare for societies turbulence. It is very common to have at least one social disturbance in every reign. You should never abolish learning the bugei (warrior arts), even in a short period. There are so many kinds of martial arts and among them only ju-jutsu is needed, this is also true in times of peace. At this time, it may be used for self-protection.... At the same time, a person that studies j-jutsu, also learns how to endure. The warrior understands the importance of separating anger from everything. Those who study ju-jutsu have good common sense and great character. If you ruin yourself over trivial things you may lose yourself, if you lose yourself you may eventually lose your home. This is a never ending cycle and... you may not ever be able to recover from it. As with children and parents, the people to the nation, and to the country, sometimes you must sacrifice yourself for these things, in other words place them above yourself. To give an example, the tomo family was prepared to die in the mountains or the sea (in the poem to die for the emperor). Complete mastery of Bud in ancient times allowed warriors to make flying birds drop from the sky by using Kiai (spirit shout), through training in martial virtues. Training with the essence of breaking evil and allowing just to prevail. If I paraphrase this you could say, the way to attain the summit is to follow the laws of nature. Therefore, there is no space between heaven and earth, yourself and your opponent, there is no space between anything in nature, all is connected, and all is chaotic. In heaven it is natural to have In and Y (positive and negative aka yin and yang), and on earth the virtue of hard and soft. There are two main things that should be studied in Bunbu (literary and martial arts). These are the Golden rules (Iron rules in Japanese) of nature. The true warrior learns by himself. In the middle of heaven and earth, one learns the mental status of preparing to die." Where is Your Attention? Is that place, or thing, or idea, worthy of your attention? You have a choice. Consider for a moment a specific event or condition that has challenged you this week. With that situation in mind, ask yourself, "Where is/was my attention?" Is your attention on the inner or the outer? On the seen or the unseen? On the good or the bad? On what is right or what is wrong? On the frustration or the opportunity? On worry or joy? On satisfaction or lack of satisfaction? On what you desire or the lack of it? On the light or the dark side? You have a choice. What do you want to see with your attention? Be gentle with yourself as you answer these questions. If you do not like your answer, laugh at yourself with loving appreciation and make a new choice. Where is your attention?" 13.01.2022 People from other martial arts have come to the dojo. They have skill, but they cannot leave their dialect of movement to truly move naturally. 11.01.2022 This is truly the time to understand, accept and act upon the teachings of Soke. Moving with the flow of nature ( Shizen Gyouin Ryu Sui ) and learning to appreciate and connect more with the simple things in life. Don’t be trapped by the desire to have things as they were. Don’t dwell on the past. Learn from it. Be inspired by it. Live for the present with a mindset directed toward positive future development and loyalty to your family, friends and teachers. It's ...important to make an effort under any circumstance - stagnant, sickness, being in an unstable lifestyle, even when society is insane. You should consider such periods as an omen before you move. When you are stuck on something, it is important to hold to your purpose but not press onward against the current. When you can't move at all, try to concentrate, continuing forward as if in a boat switching to a stronger motor. The keiko that is most important when you cannot move is kage no keiko [shadow training]." Hatsumi See more

09.01.2022 In the beginning of this clip (posted yesterday), Naka-shihan (a very famous instructor at the Headquarters Dojo of the Japan Karate Association) is asked who was the strongest Budoka he has ever met, and he answers "There were so many that I cant choose one, but the most mysterious was Hatsumi-sensei." ============= My translation ( Ohashi San ) of the actual part (starting around 01:08). ... Q. Who do you think is the strongest person youve ever seen? A. Its... there are really many and I cant say who, but the most mysterious was Hatsumi-sensei. The feeling of that kind, I experienced for the first time. He was actually in front of me, but felt like he wasnt. Q. Its not a matter of strong or weak, but a mysterious feeling? A. Right. But that can lead to strength, too.... That is not something that can be measured as strong or weak simply under rules, I thought. Q. Do you mean, even for a person like you who had had various experiences and met various people, Hatsumi-sensei then was in a different dimension? A. Absolutely. He was in a different dimension and... I got surprised. Translated by Ohashi-San. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaNXFz-OU1I](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaNXFz-OU1I)

08.01.2022 FOR PARENTS WHO ARE MARTIAL ARTISTS: Many times those who practice martial arts do not have a great fortune or an inheritance to leave their children, but if we have something we all consider as the most valuable: the amount of years invested, the amount of knowledge gained, the sweat left over the Dojo mats, the number of fights won and lost, the countless hours of travel, seminars, efforts to improve our technique and continuous growth...That for those of us who have dedica...ted our lives to the Martial Arts becomes the most valuable inheritance we have to leave!!! However, we will not all have the fortune that our children want to learn and continue our path through the Martial Arts, but if we can inherit and transmit to them what we learned and how that translates into life itself, they are teachings that will accompany them forever. As parents we want of course nothing to happen to our children and have a safe and peaceful life, but we all know thats a Utopia, rather we must prepare them as best we can to deal with those events. Because life will hit them, life will lash them very hard against the ground and want to bring them down again and again... But if we teach them well they will rise again and again, even if their bodies are bruised, sore, and very tired, but they will rise !!! And, we will look at their wounds with pride because we know that every time the body heals it gets stronger and better! And they will become stronger and better people too!! We cant fight their battles for them, but we can always be there to offer them our hand to help them get back together and keep fighting! We will look at them with pride, with satisfaction and with great inner joy to see that little by little, day by day, they continue to grow. And that within, you know that the day when you are no longer in this world, your legacy, this humble and small inheritance, will continue within your children! Hope you guys liked it and share it. A big hug. Written by Mr Cartofiel Sensei

07.01.2022 Life is like Budo. You get thrown down but you have deal with it and get back up. Youll be thrown down again and again. So, your training is to become more skilled at falling and not let it bother you, knowing that it is an essential part to accept for true personal growth. Your role as Uke ( receiver ) is teaching you this strength, resilience, flexibility and mind set to cope with lifes hardships. Its preparing you for physical, mental, and emotional hardships so that you ...can raise to your feet again and walk on. The most important role is Uke. Soke said that Takamatsu Sensei observed his ukemi one day and said, your ukemi is improving, youre starting to understand the martial arts. Its not about how many techniques you memorise or can perform, its about your ability to accept change in any circumstance and stay alive ( banpen fugyou ) . If all you are is Uke for your martial arts training career and survive, than youve succeeded as a martial artist. - Nagato Sensei

03.01.2022 "The second twenty years of your life ( training ) are then spent in exploring the ura realm (the inner, hidden, not obvious or readily seen aspects), better kn...own as the shadow side of human nature. These are years for training yourself in the ways that honor, respect, and love can be twisted out of shape and used against you, and for looking at realities in which true justice and benevolence are given appearances that confuse the masses who lack the enlightenment of perspective. Weaker souls are quick to label such wisdom as evil or pessimistic. Do not fear the strength you gain. The forty years bring you full circle, having taken you through the full realm of human growth and awareness. You begin with the freshness of innocence, gather the stains of worldliness, and return with the wisdom of innocence. You begin empty, fill up along the way, and return empty. Forty years of training is no guarantee that you will ever be a master of the art. It merely readies you for the potential of total development. From there it is up to your own character, personal nature, and life destiny as to how far you will advance." Soke Hatsumi. See more
