18.01.2022 1930 - BLOWN TO DEBRIS - For over 35 years the chimney stack of the old Apollo candle works at Bulimba has been a conspicuous landmark. Today it was rendered a heap of dust and shattered bricks by an explosion purposely arranged for its destruction. No. 1 picture shows the stack in the state it had withstood the demands of industry and the ravages of time for many years No. 2 picture depicts the monster tottering to its doom, and No. 3 view conveys vividly the end of its career. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/186355477

18.01.2022 In 1856 John Kitchen and his sons, John Ambrose, Phillip and Theophilus, began making tallow candles from butchers scraps in the backyard of their home at Emerald Hill (South Melbourne). Ordered out as an offensive trade, the business removed to Sandridge (Port Melbourne) in 1858. Fire destroyed the companys premises in 1860, but they were quickly rebuilt and a Melbourne office was opened. 14.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW ... The Apollo Stearine Candle Company (which manufactured candles and laundry soap) was previously located in the north-western portion of the Bulimba Barracks site, operating from the early 1880s (officially opened 2 September 1881). A report in the Brisbane Courier newspaper (3 September 1881) noted that there was a swamp on the land, which was used as a water supply for the candle works. Review of a 1936 aerial photograph indicates that the centre of the swamp area was approximately at the location of Building D010 (oil and lubricant store) within the truck parking area. 13.01.2022 1893 Flood - Bulimba. The district of Bulimba, in common with other places, has suffered considerably from the ravages of the flood. All the low-lying portions of the district from the foot of Bulimba Hill and Galloways Hill. The Apollo Candle Works were completely submerged, hardly a house being visible. The water varied in depth from 1ft. to 20ft.; in some places it was more. Most of the residents had made provision against the flood, and had shifted the majority of their things to more secure places of safety. A terrible amount of loss to property has been sustained, but fortunately no loss of life has been reported. The thanks of the whole of the district are due to the Messrs. Crouch, assisted by others, who did yeoman service in saving life and property. Image: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/3555470
