25.01.2022 "Nothing moves slower in Australia than fast rail" - - - - - - - - - - - - While hour for hour, there's no better way to warm the planet than to fly in a plane.... But there is some movement at the station. The federal government has set up an inquiry to seek innovative financing options possibly a reference to private sector involvement. The inquiry is taking submissions until Friday 6 December 2019. See details of how to make a submission here https://www.aph.gov.au//Media_Releas/Financing_faster_rail BELOW IS A INTERESTING READ ... "Nothing moves slower in Australia than fast rail" by Willow Aliento on the Fifth Estate Despite piles of reports, oodles of analysis and a substantial application of common sense, the federal government is proceeding at a glacial pace with plans for fast rail at scale. This week, another inquiry was launched, this one by the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Infrastructure, Transport and Cities. It is an inquiry into options for financing fast rail. The terms of reference are succinct: inquire into options for financing faster rail. So far, the government has only firmly committed to one project, a Geelong-to-Melbourne link, but has shortlisted several other corridors in the Faster Rail Plan produced earlier this year: Brisbane to Sunshine Coast; Brisbane to Gold Coast; Brisbane to Toowoomba; Sydney to Newcastle; Sydney to Wollongong; Sydney to Canberra; Sydney to Parkes (via Bathurst and Orange); Melbourne to Greater Shepparton; Melbourne to Albury-Wodonga; Melbourne to Traralgon; and Melbourne to Ballarat. Regional communities - - - - - - - - - - - - It established a unit specifically dedicated to fast rail, the National Faster Rail Agency, in July this year, as an executive agency within the Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development portfolio. In any case, the federal government doesn’t seem committed to funding fast rail, as the current inquiry says it is seeking innovative financing options possibly a reference to private sector involvement. The inquiry is taking submissions until Friday 6 December 2019. See details of how to make a submission at the link at the top of this post. 23.01.2022 Climate Change and transport - - - - - - - - - Transport emissions in Australia & the world make up 20-25% of total emissions. That's not far behind the fossil fuel electricity sector! TWO THINGS YOU CAN DO:... - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 1/ If you don't need to fly then don't. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - 2/ When you next see your local or federal politicians cutting ribbons and giving out awards, ask them: Why have they and their parties done absolutely nothing on HIGH SPEED RAIL in AUSTRALIA for the past 40 years? - - - - - - - - Emissions graphic from the following BBC article: - - - "A string of horrifying climate-related disasters has brought a distinctly environmental theme to many people's New Year resolutions. Many have chosen to reduce their carbon footprint by flying less, or cutting out planes completely. Flygskam - the Swedish word for "flight-shame" - has become commonplace. In August, Swedish climate change campaigner Greta Thunberg set an example by crossing the Atlantic in a zero-emissions yacht. If she had made the return journey from the UK to New York by air, she would have emitted 11% of the average annual emissions for someone in the UK, or the total caused by someone living in Ghana for a year..." 19.01.2022 It’s funny because it’s true The Greens once again have put their own interests ahead of the country and the planet. The Lib’s now have a mandate to do nothing on climate change, but it’s ok because the Greens got their 6 senators re elected and they will now sit back and draw a salary and achieve f$&$ all for the next three years.... https://m.betootaadvocate.com//bob-brown-leads-coalition-/

12.01.2022 Hour for hour, there's no better way to warm the planet than to fly in a plane! - - - - - - - - - - - - "A Melbourne-Canberra-Sydney-Brisbane very fast train should be obvious for Australia. Why not?" Asks Crispin Hull "This week I (Crispin Hull) travelled at 300km/h on the very, very fast train from Madrid to Barcelona. It covered the 625 kilometres in three hours, an average of 208km/h. This included four or five stops on the way.... The train goes to and from the centre of each city every hour in the main part of the day for $65 with more legroom than Qantas business class, free wifi and a quality dining car. The distance is not much less than the distance between Sydney and Melbourne. Madrid's population is 3.2 million and Barcelona's 1.6 million, much lower than that of Sydney and Melbourne. Spain's median income is about two-thirds that of Australia. Australia's approach to transport is quite maddening. If we are determined to be so stupid as to allow massive immigration that stresses our environment and infrastructure can we at least apply some intelligence to deal with the consequences. Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese said a very-fast train should be a no-brainer. He told The Sydney Morning Herald conference on population and settlement that Australians' quality of life will become worse unless we deal with public transport. The Coalition virtually junked Federal funding for public transport when it came to power in 2013. It moved it to roads and airports. The only rail it is interested in is the inland rail to move freight to and from their mates' farms. State Governments are struggling to deal with the consequences."
