This was followed by a number of games against social team...Continue reading

13.01.2022 BUNBURY BARBARIANS INDUCT FOUR LIFE MEMBERS In 2020 Life member Rian Nepe Introduction by Brett Walllis... Where do I start with Rian? I guess I should go back to 2007 and the first time we first crossed paths. It was March 2007 and we were playing our early preseason match against Mandurah for the Shield. We were short and we lost yet something about Rian stood out. Playing at 12 he showed no fear and no remorse as he took on any one who ran at him. His performance that day caught the eye of Mick Durrell and secured him a starting spot in the A grade that over the next 11 years he was to make his own. Apart from the times he played fly half, outside center, fullback, wing and occasionally half back. 112 games of football for a club in their top team is a great achievement. And the soft-spoken boy from the North Island town of Whanganui stepped up week in and week out to never leave anything on the field when playing for the Barbarians. Over his career he secured a lot accolade as well. A 4th grade premiership, 2 A grade best back of the year awards, a silver medal in the southwest games 10s, a yellow card in a grand finale, a season as captain of the A grade as well as many memories. Some good some bad and some downright hilarious. From watching first year players roll down any available hill to planking in the shape of a cross to sitting in his corner on the bus saying he won't sing for the team only to eventually relent and do so. A lot of the tales about Rian I can't really share due to there being people who may want to keep what he witnessed a secret due to various things but two stories in mind. The first one was the ability of Rian to tell a story about someone's mess up yet make it funny and not mean spirited and never harp on it the original incident. After a late tackle in a game v Mandurah Rian began to tell the story on the bus trips and post-match drinks and as it went the time between the player passing and being nailed by Rians team mate got longer with each telling. The last time it was retold I think the guy passed the ball the game finished, we all went home to Bunbury came back the following week and as the game nearly finished the hit took place. The other story is the Shrink wrapped Rav 4. After a year where the club struggled with injuries Rian decided at the end of year awards that we needed to give the club some good memories after a bad run of results. To do so he secured some industrial strength shrink and proceeded to wrap the car in it. How he was able to pull off such a prank without the then coach finding out I don’t know. To top things off as the night came to a close and the coach saw his plastic covered car a light but persistent drizzle began to fall and add to everyone's merriment. One thing that was never revealed was if Rian knew in advance of the forecast light rain or if his good luck pulled thru once more to his advantage.
13.01.2022 BUNBURY BARBARIANS INDUCT FOUR LIFE MEMBERS In 2020 Life member Shane Stewart Barbarians have always had a large New Zealand playing contingent. In the 2000’s there was only one KIWI Shane first came to the clubs attention at an after match session at the local nite clubs. Never short of bravado he was giving some advice to a group of players about how soft the Barbarians where, this resulted with him lifted and pinned to a wall and asked to reconsider. Rather than tak...e offense he decided this was a bunch guys he could connect to. The nite clubs where always the best recruiting area back in the days and Shane became the master recruiter often filling out Saturdays B Team on a Friday nite. Shane was the epitome of a hard working loose fwd whether at number eight or open side flanker he was prepared to chase and tackle all game in defence, was a ball running link to the backline with ball in hand and a more than useful lineout option. Shane’s first season for the Babarians was in 1999 when he won his first Club Fairest and Best, followed by Best Forward in 2003. In 2004 he was again the Clubs Fairest and Best followed by another Best Forward in 2007. Shanes last official season with the Barbarians was in 2008 with a couple cameo matches in following seasons as he relocated to Perth. During Shanes time as a Barbarian player he was always a leader on the field whether he was captaining that day or not. He was the guy you wanted on your team and at your back. After match he was the guy you went drinking with for a good nite out and again always had your back if needed. From 1999 to 2008 Shane played over 131 games with the Barbarians and was a core team member for this duration. See more
06.01.2022 BUNBURY BARBARIANS INDUCT FOUR LIFE MEMBERS In 2020 Life member Peter Harnby Pete played full time for the Barbarians between 1985-1994, played off and on for a while thereafter, and was still running around for Collie only a few years ago. In that time he won Premierships and Country Championships with both Bunbury and Collie. Records show Pete played 130 games for Bunbury, but this was before good records were kept, so the number is more likely much higher. ... Pete has been a great servant of the club, serving on the committee for many years, mainly as the club treasurer, and working tirelessly in the early years as the club was being established. An early, but enduring image of Peter was during the 1986 County Carnival held in Perth. At the time, there were a large number of players at the club who lived in and around Kirup. Enough in fact to form a team to compete at the carnival. Now Kirup was probably better known at the time for its laid-back hippy lifestyle, Kirup Syrup, and above average consumption of illegal substances. So, when they needed a bus driver to ferry them around for the weekend, Pete was very quick to volunteer. No-one present at the carnival will ever forget the image of the bus pulling up, and the thick plume of smoke escaping the minibus door as it was opened and out poured the Kirup team followed by Pete. Pete was very good friends with the late great Greg Wilson, and at half-time in many home games, the pair would often be seen in a huddle of their own. If they were up wind of the rest of the team, an herbaceous whiff of smoke could often be detected. All of this didn’t affect Pete’s playing ability however, as he remains one of the best wingers to have played for the club, with his blistering pace and fearless, bordering on reckless, defence. A recklessness which would ultimately result in several broken collarbones, and other career ending injuries. Pete is probably best known, for his booming singing voice and uncanny ability to remember and recall just about every rugby song ever written. Back in the day when bus travel was an essential part of rugby at the Barbarians, Pete’s presence on a bus trip ensured everyone had a great time and got home exhausted if not from the rugby but from singing all the way home. Peter should have been given life membership many years ago and in this special year we are taking this opportunity to correct this past oversight. See more
