25.01.2022 The Department of Health is reminding residents and travelers in the South West to take additional precautions to prevent mosquito bites over the coming months. The warning follows an increase in the detection of Ross River virus (RRV) in mosquitoes collected from the South West.... The recent warmer weather had contributed to an increase in mosquito numbers. Spring and summer are the peak seasons for mosquito activity and RRV infection in people in the South West. Mosquito management programs are undertaken by local government authorities in collaboration with the Department of Health in areas with a recognised risk of RRV activity. Symptoms of RRV can last for weeks to months, and include painful or swollen joints, sore muscles, skin rash, fever, fatigue and headaches. The only way to diagnose the disease is by visiting your doctor and having a specific blood test. There is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for RRV. The only way to prevent infection is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. While there is no need to alter travel plans to the South West, individuals living or traveling in the region are encouraged to take the following precautions to prevent mosquito bites: avoid outdoor exposure, particularly at dawn and early evening wear protective (long, loose-fitting, light-coloured) clothing when outdoors apply an effective personal repellent containing diethyltoluamide (DEET) or picaridin evenly to all areas of exposed skin and always follow the label instructions ensure infants and children are adequately protected against mosquito bites, preferably with suitable clothing, bed nets or other forms of insect screening ensure insect screens are installed and in good condition on houses and caravans remove water holding containers from around the home and garden to ensure mosquitoes do not breed in your own backyard use mosquito coils and mosquito lanterns and apply barrier sprays containing bifenthrin in patio and outdoor areas around houses use mosquito nets and mosquito-proof tents if sleeping outside

Which bin does it go in? ... Go FOGO with old school paper, cardboard art, scrap books, posters etc. Use FOGO for these and it will leave more room in your recycling bin over the festive season. FOGO matter is mulched and is stored in large pile. Aerators speed up the composting process, heating to a minimum of 55 degrees to kill harmful bacteria and seeds. 16.01.2022 This year, Mental Health Week in Western Australia will run from 10 to 17 October. Each year, one in every five Australians will experience a mental health issue, and almost half will experience a mental health issue in their lifetime. ... There is no shame in seeking help. Mental health is not just about a diagnosed mental health issue. It is about the way we think, feel and develop relationships. Looking after our mental health and wellbeing is something we should do on a daily basis. When we go through tough times, little things can make a difference to how we feel and how we cope with life’s ups and downs. Some things to consider in relation to your own mental health: Have I arranged to catch up with friends or family recently? Am I being open with people I trust about how I’m feeling? Have I been sleeping well lately? Have I been physically active? Have I scheduled in time to get outside and enjoy nature? Am I keeping my drinking to a minimum? Other things you can try are available at https://www.thinkmentalhealthwa.com.au/ We’re all different and what works for one of us may not work for another. Take care of yourself and each other.

14.01.2022 The Department of Health is urging residents and travellers throughout Western Australia to take extra precautions to avoid mosquito bites over the coming months, to prevent mosquito-borne disease transmission. The warning follows ongoing Ross River virus (RRV) detections in mosquitoes and a recent increase in the number of human cases of RRV disease notified to the Department of Health, indicating the virus is very active in the environment.... The current risk of acquiring RRV is highest in the South West of WA, and along the coastal Midwest and Gascoyne regions, from Jurien Bay to Denham. Symptoms of RRV disease can last for weeks to months, and include painful or swollen joints, sore muscles, skin rash, fever, fatigue and headaches. The only way to diagnose the disease is by visiting your doctor and having a specific blood test. There is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for RRV disease, the only way to prevent infection is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Individuals living or travelling in the regions are encouraged to take the following precautions to prevent mosquito bites: avoid outdoor exposure, particularly at dawn and early evening; wear protective (long, loose-fitting, light-coloured) clothing when outdoors; apply an effective personal repellent containing diethyltoluamide (DEET) or picaridin evenly to all areas of exposed skin and always follow the label instructions; ensure infants and children are adequately protected against mosquito bites, preferably with suitable clothing, bed nets or other forms of insect screening; remove water holding containers from around the home and garden to ensure mosquitoes do not breed in your own backyard; use mosquito coils and mosquito lanterns and apply barrier sprays containing bifenthrin in patio and outdoor areas around houses; and ensure insect screens are installed and in good condition on houses and caravans; use mosquito nets and mosquito-proof tents if sleeping outside. For more information about mosquito prevention visit http://healthywa.wa.gov.au/Healthy-l/Prevent-mosquito-bites
