23.01.2022 From Brightening the Walls to Brightening Peoples Lives. Art Without Barriers started from a very simple idea. That idea was to create a space that was bright and welcoming, a space that could be transformed into an artistic centre for all our clients to use.We then invited people from all different walks of life to create individual and collaborative pieces for the centre. These were designed to go on the walls and establish artistic ownership of the centre. The space could ...now become an integral part of their identity and, more importantly, provide a place of belonging. Some of our very first pieces were a collection of self-portraits of the Art Without Barriers students. These self- portraits have come to characterise the unique, colourful and vibrant personality of the centre.Since these early beginnings we have developed a regular weekly program with the goal of building friendships, developing skills, uncovering hidden talent and connecting people to culture. The original vision has expanded from brightening the walls to brightening peoples lives. The program has since spread into the wider community at large with a commission to develop a mural , an opportunity to host our first Art exhibition and now a range of sellable art. See more

08.01.2022 The Art Without Barriers program is based on a very simple idea lets create a space that is bright and welcoming; lets make this space one that can be tran...sformed into a Centre that facilitates artistic expression for Life Without Barriers clients to access and use". With the help of his trusty offsider Banjo the French Bulldog, Jake Shakey Butler runs the Art Without Barriers workshop for people with disability in Yangebup. The Fremantle artist was nominated for the Excellence in Improving Participation Award by his art students. Born with a congenital genetic tremor, Jakes ability to overcome his own physiological challenges on a daily basis has undoubtedly inspired everyone who attend his art classes - even those who initially claimed that drawing a stick figure was too hard. What Jake has done to help my life through his art program has changed my life. I have developed skills that I never ever knew I possessed. My first project that I worked on was the Emu and Blossoms piece which features on our calendar and candles and was auctioned off at our Exhibition for over $1200, said Erin, one of Jake's students. Jacobs story is featured in today's The West Australian - thewest.com.au. Make sure you grab a copy to read all about our nominee.

08.01.2022 First Art Without Barriers workshop of 2018 turned out some pretty awesome work-in-progresses for our up-coming art exhibition. Keep an eye out for date and venue to be announced soon.

06.01.2022 On the 14th of December Life Without Barriers in house artist "Shakey Jakey" and his fiancé Ange are joining creative forces and having their first exhibition together - which will be feauturing 2 of our clients individual pieces. Check out the video which features clients Erin and Karla at the end. The exhibition is based on their trips up north and all the little gems they discovered across WA and consequently brought into our classroom. It is there belief that often these ...trips are taken for granted, so they've made it their mission to bring others on new adventures too, starting with our artists in the Art Without Barriers Program. Share at will, so we can support Jake who has undoubtebly changed the lives of all the students he has worked with beyond words. So its only fitting we all come down to support him in his new venture as; he'd love to see all of our faces at the exhibition! 06.01.2022 We are hanging up our paintbrushes for the Festive Season! Merry Christmas everyone, we look forward to seeing you all in the New Year, we re-open on January 3rd. Look out for some exciting new workshops at Burdiya in 2018, further information to follow!

05.01.2022 Perth's "Shakey Jakey" - Jacob Butler has lived with constant tremors his whole life. When he picked up a paint brush, nobody expected the extraordinary creations that would follow.

04.01.2022 Karlas story Karla has always had an affinity with horses and dreams of owning her own horse one day. She draws and paints them in various beautiful forms at Art Without Barriers. This picture shows the initial sketch that she created on a piece of recycled timber from the old Canning Bridge. This was done in conjunction with our Mens Shed program. The group cut and sanded the wood in preparation for her to paint on.... We have since been awarded a Community Initiated Mural Grant by the City Of Fremantle to complete this piece on a grander scale. A large 3m x 1.2m mural will be displayed on the fence which leads to the dog beach in South Fremantle. The owner of the fence wants to pay homage to the history of the park. Hollis Park has had a long association with horses and there is still a functioning stable behind the fence. We know that working on a horse themed artwork on such a grand scale is going to suit Karla just fine!
