01.01.2022 Seasonal Update: WINTER Here are a few tips from Burgess Horticulture surrounding the maintenance of your gardens during the cold winter months: 1. Over-Watering:... As much as we know you want to keep your grass looking vibrant and green, over-watering can do more damage than good. Over-watering can cause root rot in plants/shrubs. Also, fungal problems can arise when your turf is constantly wet, this can cause dead patches down the track. You do not want to drown you plants/turf; Only watering your turf/plants is necessary in summer as they are the growing months. Unless your plants/turf is bone dry please avoid watering. 2. Over-Mowing: We all love the look and smell of a freshly mown lawn, but unfortunately over-mowing during the winter months can cause a great amount of damage. Like everything, the growth of plants and turf slow down dramatically during the winter months; by cutting your lawn this can make it more susceptible to insect infestation. Every four weeks in winter is more than sufficient when mowing your lawn. 3. Over-Pruning: Even knows it is a renowned fact that a well pruned plant produces more flowers/fruits. Over-pruning in winter can cause plants to ‘bleed’ or ooze sap. This leaves the plant susceptible to insect intrusion. Another healthy way to prune is not to hack into the tree/plant, it is better off keeping the natural shape of the tree. 4. Leaf litter: Canberra is well known for the beautiful street trees that spread throughout. Although the beauty disappears when these trees decide to leave leaf litter all over our roads, garden and lawns. It can be a daunting task for some, but simply racking your leaves into a pile can save the well-being of your lawn. Leaving leaf litter on the lawn over a long period of time can cause patches of grass to deteriorate; so, when the summer months come around and the leaf has gone, unfortunately you could be left with dead patches of grass. Leaf litter is a great mulch so why not use a free source of mulch that appears right in your front yard.
