It’s not the same without a crowd but we’re excited to bring a bigger and better livestream to the masses for the rest of our 2020 competitions. 24.01.2022 In a world where every other influencer has a line of personalisied booty bands there comes a time to put down the Kool-Aid, step away from the clam shells and to think deeper. The human body is a complex, dynamic system and nothing happens in isolation. Understanding the function of any individual muscle necessitates an understanding of its role within that system. Almost everyone in the training world has heard someone use the term inactive or lazy glutes. The truth is ...that if your glutes were inactive you wouldn’t be able to stand up or to walk. Your glutes play an important role in controlling the pelvis during the gait cycle and without them your morning stroll to the local cafe would look a whole lot different. Long story, short: Your glutes aren’t the reason your squat/deadlift is stuck. More often than not the issue lies in your ability to control the relative position of your pelvis in space and the relationship between your pelvis and ribcage. In order to improve these skills you need to select exercises that are a) relevant to the task and b) appropriately scaled (difficulty, load, tempo etc) to your current skill and experience. Lying on the floor flapping your leg around against a band might make your glutes feel activated but it won’t help you break through your squat/deadlift plateau. Position matters most. #weareburley

23.01.2022 2 spots have opened for 3-lift. A handful of spots for single lift or push-pull still remain. DM us if you’d like to secure a spot!... #weareburley

23.01.2022 Powerlifting will be back. The platform is ready. Will you be?... #weareburley

23.01.2022 Human movement is a complex, dynamic system. In order to achieve mastery in a given skill an athlete must move towards autonomous/unconscious movement. This process is non-linear and can take months or years of dedicated practice.... A coach can help guide you through the process by selecting exercises that facilitate motor learning. This means applying constraints to a given exercise (tempo, positional variation, range of motion, intensity, focus/cueing etc) that allow the desired movement pattern to emerge. Comprehensive coaching involves more than identifying body parts and prescribing sets + reps.

22.01.2022 Tough times build tough people. One step at a time. Keep going.... #weareburley : @passoutmedia

22.01.2022 2021 is going to be huge! We’re back next year with a full calendar of novice and @gpcaustralia competitions! It’s been a very quite year with only 3 competitions but we can’t wait to see very one back on the platform CRUSHING it in 2020.... #weareburley

20.01.2022 Does lifting less weight count as a PR? Equipped lifting (i.e. using a bench shirt or squat/deadlift suit) requires a level of technical proficiency above and beyond that required to be successful raw. Learning to control your position and successfully complete the lift with lighter weights without compromising your position is an integral part of the long road to equipped success.... More control with lighter weights means you can practice the movement without constantly hammering on your sucked and joints with supra-maximal loads every week. Darren’s shirt is just a little tighter than it was pre-lockdown and yet last night he managed a successful touch at 165kg after a few weeks of struggling to touch 170+kg. A couple of minor adjustments to the position of the shirt and things are looking much crisper! Onwards! #weareburley

20.01.2022 PREPARE TO POWERLIFT Your first competition will always be a nerve wracking experience regardless of how much experience you have in the gym. @gym_junkie_joe has plenty of training experience having stepped onto the bodybuilding stage prior to entering the powerlifting world. He came to us looking to give himself the best possible experience for his first time on the platform.... After our 4-week course Josiah had refined his technique, improved his confidence and absolutely crushed his first powerlifting competition. Josiah capped off the day with this ripper 210kg deadlift. If, like Jo, you’ve spent some time lifting but you’re still unsure about stepping onto the platform than our 4-week Prepare to Powerlift course is for you. The next intake starts on February 15 culminating in our first novice comp of the year on March 14. There’s only 3 spots left for this round! Head to the link in our bio to find out more. #weareburley

19.01.2022 Control what you can control #weareburley

19.01.2022 It’s good to be home. #weareburley

18.01.2022 Why is more important than what. #weareburley

18.01.2022 It’s almost time to hit the platform! It’s been a weird year for powerlifting (amongst other things). It’s been 8 months since we hosted a competition which is the longest break we’ve had since our first comps in 2014. Harry is one of the team hitting the platform on September 27 for GPC ACT States and he’s looking STRONG!... Here he is crushing a double at 175kg. We’re excited to see everyone back on the platform soon! We’ve got a couple of spots left for States. If you’re keen to get on board get your entry in fast! #weareburley

18.01.2022 POWERLIFTING IS BACK! Our first comp for 2020 is on tomorrow and here’s the flight breakdown for the @gpcaustralia ACT States. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will not have spectators for this comp.... Rest assured we’re bringing a new and improved live stream of all the action straight to a screen near you. Stay tuned for the link first thing tomorrow. Lifting kicks off at 11am. #weareburley

16.01.2022 Gyms will be open soon. - Here are 3 ideas to help you make the most of your return to training. - 1. Just start from where you are, with what you have.... @whiskey.weights.wisdom nailed this in his book Minding yourSELF. Now more than ever it’s time to remove your ego from the equation and focus on what you can do now not what you could do before the onset of all this madness. - 2. Pay attention to how you feel Sets, reps and percentages have a place in training. Initially though your training should be about finding your feet and reestablishing positive habits. To do that make sure you’re paying attention to how you feel while you’re training and in the days after each session. - 3. Be grateful Training is a privilege. Treat it as such. - For more on these points check out our latest blog post. burleystrength.com/blog [Link in bio] #weareburley @ Burley Strength

16.01.2022 This door has been closed for longer this year than ever before. It’s so good to be back. #weareburley

15.01.2022 Consistent effort over time. Strength is earned, not given. #weareburley

14.01.2022 LADIES OF LIFTING 2020 The next competition on our calendar will be Sunday October 25. Competitors will receive an email this week with details of the changes to how the day will run in order to comply with all restrictions.... We will have a couple of extra spots up for grabs so if you’d like to get your name on the wait list email [email protected] ASAP! #weareGURLEY

13.01.2022 Strength is a choice. - Sometimes it’s as simple as choosing to walk through a door like this. - At other times it’s a little more complex. ... - Regardless it will always involve sacrifice and hard work. - Strength is more than just a number on the bar. - Strength is a choice. - #weareburley : @merochitra See more

13.01.2022 We can’t wait to see you! #weareburley

13.01.2022 You are your own competition. Are you better today than you were yesterday? If not, why not?... Keep moving forward. #weareburley : @passoutmedia

13.01.2022 It’s almost time... #weareburley

13.01.2022 17.5kg Deadlift PR! Is there anything better than finishing your first comp with a MASSIVE deadlift PR? Dan followed up a 115kg squat and a 100kg bench with this monster 175kg deadlift. A very solid first appearance on the platform all round!... Awesome work Dan! #weareburley

12.01.2022 Spots are limited. Sign up https://fb.me/e/39Pf5BsQA #weareburley

12.01.2022 NOVICE COMP STREAM Lifting kicks off at 10am AEDT for the final comp of the 2020 powerlifting calendar at Burley Strength! #weareburley

11.01.2022 @tswellings with 155kg x2 Things are heating up for those of the Burley powerlifting team who’re competing at the @gpcaustralia Canberra Cup on December 6. Strength isn’t built in the 6 weeks before a comp. Instead this period is about realising the strength gains built over the proceeding months.... Consistency across weeks, months and years make the difference. Be like Tom. Do the work. #weareburley

11.01.2022 Probably the worst case of van-dalism we’ve ever seen... Fortunately no one was injured and we’d been meaning to update the business hours on the door anyway.

11.01.2022 Always was, always will be. We are privileged to live, work and train on the land of the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples. We see you, we hear you and we stand with you.

10.01.2022 Another beautiful day to be strong. #weareburley

10.01.2022 RESILIENCE The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties 2020 has been a year that most of us will never forget.... The power to choose your response to things you can’t control is a skill that must be developed over time. You can’t buy resilience and grit. You earn it one day at a time. Choose to push your boundaries in areas you can control. Be comfortable being uncomfortable. #weareburley

10.01.2022 Strength is fun. Lift heavy, talk smack with your friends and get stronger all under one roof. What more can you ask for?... #weareburley

09.01.2022 Tomorrow can’t come soon enough. #weareburley

08.01.2022 #throwback to the real reason we have security cameras: So we can relive moments like this. @rare_human_ in all his glory at Burley v1.0. #weareburley

08.01.2022 Rack city #weareburley

08.01.2022 Injuries don’t need to hold you back. - You might have to reassess your goals and shift your priorities but the ship should still be moving forward. - Alex just crushed her best bench (46kg) for a set of 2 just under a month after ACL repair.... - Squats might not be on the cards for a little while but that just means there’s more time for bench! - Onwards! #weareburley

06.01.2022 We’re still closed. The sun continues to rise. This too shall pass.... #weareburley

06.01.2022 300kg - Last Chance PR - This time last week most of us were scrambling to work # out what training without a gym would look like. - Nik decided that a hearty breakfast and a PR deadlift were all he’d need to survive the coming armageddon.... - Nice work @nik_stone91 - #weareburley See more

05.01.2022 Just start. #weareburley

05.01.2022 #isoprojects We’re closed but we haven’t stopped. #weareburley

04.01.2022 What a beautiful day to be strong #weareburley

04.01.2022 Remove your emotions from the equation. In a world where information is only a few clicks away it’s easy to loose the signal within the noise. If you’re a powerlifter you need to be squatting, bench pressing and deadlifting for a large portion of the year.... If you’re a field sport athlete a max effort single on the deadlift is most likely not a good use of your time. If you’re aiming to improve your body composition maybe a straight bar squat isn’t the best exercise choice for you. Define your goals. If your training decisions don’t align with your goal then it’s time to reassess. #weareburley

03.01.2022 GPC Australia ACT States 2020 Lifting kicks off at 11am for the first comp of 2020! Unfortunately we won't have spectators in house today but you'll be able to watch all the action from the comfort of your own couch!... Check out the stream below! #weareburley https://youtu.be/EPReaQWm1Zo

03.01.2022 SKILL vs OUTPUT Anyone who’s had the pleasure of swinging their leg over a @rogueaustralia Echo bike knows it’s easily the most miserable experience you’ll have all week. That’s because there is an inverse relationship between the skill demand of any movement and your ability to output force.... There is a time and a place refining your ability to perform high skill movements. Sometimes the goal is just to work hard. Step up, swing the leg over and get to it. Happy Monday fam. #weareburley

03.01.2022 All motion is relative. Human movement is a complex, dynamic system where no one part acts alone. Whether you’re pursuing performance or simply want to feel better in the gym it’s important to look past the simple, surface level approach of yesteryear.... Understanding the relationship between the pelvis and rib cage is one of the core (pun intended) components of our training philosophy at Burley Strength. The ability to access the full range of motion available to the ribs and pelvis should form the foundation of the pursuit of performance and rehabilitation alike. Nothing moves in isolation. Look deeper. #weareburley

02.01.2022 2020 Competition Calendar Since our team began hosting competitions in 2014 we’ve set the standard for powerlifting in the ACT. In that time we’ve had over 40 completions and hundreds of lifters step up to the eternal struggle against the confines of gravity. 2020 represents the longest competition break we’ve had since that first comp in 2014.... It’s been a wild ride but we can’t wait to see you all back on the platform soon. Numbers + spectators at all comps will be limited to ensure the safety of our team and to be in line with government guidelines at the time. All entries for either Ladies of Lifting or GPC States will be valid for the new dates or they can be transferred to a different completion on the 2020/21 calendar. We’ll be in contact with all registered competitors to advise on the process for transfer. See you on the platform soon! #weareburley

01.01.2022 Don’t let injuries hold you back! @lxndr.frtwll has been chipping away at rehab post ACL surgery while also quietly working on a MONSTER bench. Since surgery Alex has put 10kg on her bench with this 56kg effort. That represents a 22% increase in her bench in 4 months. ... Injuries happen. Refocus and move forward. Awesome work Alex! #weareburley

01.01.2022 PassOut Media have pulled off a Christmas miracle so everyone can relive the joy of the final novice comp of 2020! We can’t wait to see you all on the platform in 2020! #weareburley

01.01.2022 Individually we are strong. Together we are Burley. #weareburley
