19.01.2022 Question submitted for the Uni’s upcoming webinar on the variation by Callum, FBE casual professional staff, studying a Master of Environment: 'Academics from ...Melbourne's own Centre for the Study of Higher Education have concluded that Melbourne Uni is in a "comparatively strong financial position" with enough cash and investments to cover even the pessimistic COVID financial case. (Ian Marshman and Frank Larkins, CSHE, 28 May 2020). So why is it necessary to cut salaries? If it is necessary to slim expenses, then why is the focus on staff salaries? Why can't we stop expensive building projects or make the executive take larger profit cuts? If the VC makes a million-dollar salary, then perhaps a 20% cut is too small?" Raises a fair point. #VoteNo next Wednesday! And tell all your staff friends to do the same.

17.01.2022 The University of Melbourne doesn’t think that this semester will have a major impact on our WAMs, so UMSU needs your help to prove them wrong. Students are at a disadvantage, so it’s time for the University to stand up and do what’s right for students. Sign our petition to let the University know how you feel.

16.01.2022 After weeks of advocating for student voices, the University has finally changed its position on WAM. Last week we presented our petition to the University whi...ch had over 13,600 signatures. This outcome is the direct result of student voices. There is power in a union. UMSU will never stop standing up for students. #strongertogether

07.01.2022 You might have heard already that the University of Melbourne is proposing a variation to its enterprise agreement, the workplace agreement for workers on campus. These changes haven’t been made in consultation with the staff union, and introduce a 2.2% pay cut, as well as new voluntary separation packages that make it cheaper, quicker and easier to cut staff. The University just announced it made $402,000,000 in profit last year - it doesn’t need to implement these measure...s and bring in cuts. In fact, in a pandemic, staff and students need more support than ever. We need to show the University that we won’t accept cuts, when staff are already overworked, and students are already overcharged for their University experience. If you’re University staff, vote No to Variations on WEDNESDAY 10 JUNE. If you’re not staff, urge your staff friends to do the same. You can also attend the union’s physical protest and zoom rally on Tuesday!

05.01.2022 Don't forget- trivia tonight!

03.01.2022 VOTE NO TO DUNCAN'S VARIATION Vice Chancellor Duncan Maskell wants staff to vote for a new variation to their agreement that would cut pay by 2.2% and make it c...heaper and easier to sack workers. Its an insult to their hard work during this crisis, and whats more is that staff know that this is only the tip of the iceberg. We know Unimelb has nearly half a billion dollars lying around since last year, and billions of dollars of assets. So why do Duncan Maskell and the rest of Chancellery want to make these cuts? The answer is simple. To cut costs, make more profits and use this opportunity to finish the process of turning higher education into a business. Staff won't accept this. Students won't accept this. We are united in fighting back against this Variation, and any future cuts! Share this post and sign the petition! https://www.megaphone.org.au//no-cuts-ditch-the-unimelb-ea

02.01.2022 Checkout UMSU Environment Collective's petition calling on PwC to pull out of the minerals council of Australia and sign today! PWC has to #CutAllTies and leave the Minerals Council of Australia. PwC claim to be sustainability leaders - but while they’re a member of the Minerals Council, we can’t take them seriously. Tom Seymour has just become the new CEO of PwC Australia. He has an opportunity now to make his mark.... The Minerals Council has held back action on climate change for the last 20 years with extensive lobbying, advertising campaigns and a revolving door between parliament and mining companies. The Minerals Council can only continue holding back action on climate change because companies like PwC fund them with annual membership fees. PwC can’t be a member of the Minerals Council and claim to be serious about tackling climate change. See more
