Bookings essential by 21 October via phone 0468866492 or email [email protected]

25.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday This weeks windback includes a notable Aussie legend! In October 1966, the Burnside Swimming Centre (now known as the George Bolt...on Swimming Centre Burnside) opened at Hazelwood Park on Greenhill Road. Pictured here is Olympian Dawn Fraser on the starting block, and diving in for the first time. Dawn flew to Adelaide to officially open the pool and swim the inaugural lap. In 2016, it was only fitting that Dawn would return to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Swimming Centre! Both visits she drew quite an enthusiastic crowd! 25.01.2022 STATE HERITAGE PLACES OF BURNSIDE ADDRESS: Wyfield Street and Coach Road, Wattle Park DETAILS: Magill Stone Mines. Behind Penfolds Winery stretching eastwards towards Knox Terrace, lies the site of the Magill Stone Mines, now mostly covered with rubble and grassy patches. These mines were the earliest such quarries opened for the underground mining of building stone in Adelaide and date from around 1850. Small quantities of copper were also extracted from the site.... The old mining site is a significant relic of an industry which has proliferated across the Adelaide Hills Face Zone and has dramatically altered much of the landscape. Its relative rarity as an underground stone mining site makes it an important part of the citys industrial heritage. Now part of the City of Burnsides Magill Stone Mine Reserve. 21.01.2022 Very grateful for our SA heritage grant and support from Adelaide Cemeteries Authority and many donors through the National Trust of South Australia. What a contrast in the before and after photos of the restored grave of Osmond Gilles! Osmond Gilles was a prominent resident of the Burnside area and a generous philanthropist who is remembered in many place names around Adelaide.

20.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday Photo of Penfolds entrance from 1923, and aerial view of Penfolds from 1928 With French grapevine cuttings in hand; Dr Christopher an...d Mary Penfold journeyed to Australia from England in 1844. The Penfolds purchased land in Makgill (now Magill) and built a small stone cottage known as the ‘Grange’. Christopher planted the fruit, initially using the wine to treat his patients. While her husband was on rounds, Mary tended the vineyards. The business grew in popularity and after Christopher’s death in 1870, Mary assumed total responsibility of the vineyards. Mary passed away in 1896, but her grandsons were determined to continue the company. Penfolds went on to become a leading Australian winery. The grange vineyard in Magill is smaller today, but the cottage, buildings and some of the vines remain as a reminder of its early history. 15.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday William Anderson established the Mountain Hut Inn on the Great Eastern Road, Glen Osmond in 1845. The next publican was the infamous Rober...t Spearman, who in 1848 was sent to Van Diemen’s Land for highway robbery. The story of the robbery was shared years later in The Express and Telegraph: A farmer called at the hotel, and having been served by Spearman continued his journey up the hill by the longer way round the Devil’s Elbow. Spearman followed his man, and taking the short cut, intercepted him and robbed him on the top road. He got back to the hotel as quickly as possible, and the farmer came back and reported the robbery to the very man who had robbed him. (5 August 1899, page 4). The Mountain Hut Inn traded as a pub until 1909. The site then operated as a Temperance Hotel until the 1950s. The building was used as a dog and cat boarding business for 50 years and was sold earlier this year with plans to develop it into an Emali Early Learning Centres. 15.01.2022 Thank you to everyone for taking part in this week's trivia! This of course is the Old Toll House at the start of the Princes Highway/South Eastern Freeway in G...len Osmond. The Toll House was built in 1841 to collect tolls intended to fund the construction of the Adelaide to Mount Barker road. But in South Australian tradition, the tolls were extremely unpopular and were stopped in 1847. This image is most likely from 1951, after a major restoration and return of one of the toll gates to the site. 15.01.2022 One of the prettiest houses of Rose Park was the Leschen residence at 157 Fullarton Road, Rose Park (formerly Victoria Avenue). This house was built for Hugo Le...schen, owner and manager of the Adelaide Gymnasium between 1903-4, and is attributable to leading South Australian architect Edward Davies, with a matching tender and traits to other works by this designer. It was demolished in the 1960s to built the very ugly set of flats currently on this site. I'm finding this demolition a little unforgivable.

14.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday Water supply was a high concern for Adelaides population in the late 19th Century. At that time, the River Torrens (Karrawirra Parri) wa...s the primary water source. In 1860, the first piped-water network was built, reaching some Adelaide homes. It took many years for houses in the suburbs to be connected, so many property owners had to establish their own water supply, such as a well. Pictured here are well diggers at work in Stonyfell, circa 1902. Alfred Black of Bell Yett purchased this allotment next to a creek to build an extra well for his home after struggling through a drought year. Do you know what equipment the well diggers are using? 13.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday The Pepper Street Arts Centre is celebrating 25 years this week! The Arts Centre is a valuable community space that promotes local artist...s and hosts workshops for budding creators to develop new skills. The Arts Centre building is a little bit older than 25, in fact, it is 138 years old! Built in 1882, the site was originally the Magill village primary school and accommodated 150 pupils. By 1924, the school was overcrowded and some classes were moved to the Brougham Street community hall. Two years later, a new classroom was constructed on the corner of Penfold Road and Adelaide Street. Junior students continued to attend classes in the ‘old’ school building until 1963. The site was then used by the Art Faculty of Wattle Park Teachers’ College and later by the Kent Town Special School. In 1988, Burnside Council purchased the building and launched the Arts Centre in 1995. Photograph: Magill Primary School, 1882. 07.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday Hazelwood Park in 1930! Can you spot any changes 90 years later? The Clark family immigrated to Australia in circa 1853 and purchased 45... acres of land in the area that is now Hazelwood Park. They moved into ‘Hazelwood House’, which stood near the corner of Olive Grove and Hawthorn Crescent. The home was named after the school ‘Hazelwood’ in Birmingham, England. In 1915, the State Government purchased the area for the people of South Australia. The park was given to the City of Burnside in 1964. Extra points if you can tell us in which direction the photo was taken! 07.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday In September 1931, the narrow creeks of the Eastern suburbs broke their banks. Waterfall Gully Road turned into a red-brown sea and the ...threat of a landslide in the hills felt imminent. Water coursed through the streets, sweeping through gardens while residents scrambled to protect their homes. In some instances, houses flooded to the ceiling. Despite the estimated thousands of pounds of damage, some of the community enjoyed the event. People watched the spectacle from the banks of the Torrens or paddled their canoes and dinghies onto the newly formed lakes. Photographs from the Local History Collection show the floods at Kensington Road, Portrush Road and Hazelwood Park. 06.01.2022 Our final post of Burnside State Heritage Places - the iconic Toll House at Glen Osmond! A feature of our Burnside Historical Society logo and located on the boundary with our neighbouring council, the City of Mitcham. STATE HERITAGE PLACES OF BURNSIDE ADDRESS: Mount Barker Road, Glen Osmond... DETAILS: Former Glen Osmond Tollgate. One of the oldest buildings in the State, the Toll House was built in 1841 when the colony was suffering severe financial hardship. Tolls were collected (from those travellers who did not choose to undertake a hazardous bypass route) until 1847, when the levies were abolished, it being seen as unjust that this road should be the only road in the State to be taxed. It was Samuel Davenport, a local member of the Legislative Council, who moved for the abolition of the levies. The toll-gate keeper lived in the hexagonal house, with a small garden. His hours were fixed by the Act from 12 oclock at night to 12 oclock of the next succeeding night! The small, stone building with central chimney is a rare example of its type and well illustrates the early history of governmental fund raising. The Toll House and Gate is now located in the median of the busy South Eastern Freeway. 02.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday In 1912, W.G. McAllan established the Adelaide Brick Company on Waterfall Gully Road, Burnside. In the centre of what is today known as L...angman Recreation Reserve, the company built an 18 chamber Hoffman Kiln. Clay was blasted from the hillside and fired in the kiln, which was initially powered by coal. At its peak, the plant employed 43 men and was producing 5 million bricks per annum. Production ceased in the 1960s. Pictured here is the demolition of the chimney in 1970. A few relics of the plant remain at the Reserve.
