07.01.2022 Some interesting stats! The ABS data on marriages and divorces for 2018 has just been released. Of the total 119,188 marriages in Australia in 2018, 6,538 (5.5%) were same sex marriages.A great stat, but definitely not the crazy economic bonanza of 24,000 same sex marriages predicted by people who hadn't done the maths! Virtually all same sex marriages were officiated by civil celebrants, while 79% of hetero marriages were officiated by civil celebrants.... Interesting that in 2008 the total number of marriages (all hetero) was 118,756, when the population was 21.25 million, and the crude marriage rate was 5.5 marriages per 1,000 persons, compared to 119,188 in 2018 when the total population was 25 million and the crude marriage rate 4.8 marriages per 1,000 estimated resident population And fewer people are getting divorced!
