23.01.2022 The Association of Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades (AVBFB) and the Mining Emergency Response Competition (MERC) have announced a new partnership that will deliver unprecedented professional development opportunities for Western Australias 20,000+ Bush Fire Volunteers. In November 2019, the first of the new Bushfire Games will be held alongside and in collaboration with the ninth annual MERC on Langley Park in the Perth Central Business District. Since 2011, MERC has steadily bu...ilt on every years success and is now an exciting free community event that not only tests the skills of WAs mining emergency response volunteers through a series of realistic scenarios simulating real life emergency incidents, but also provides a fantastic opportunity for those living in the metropolitan to learn about the interesting and difficult work of those who put up their hands as first responders in the mining sector. With exactly the same goals but extremely limited resources, the AVBFB as the peak body for the incredible women and men of WAs largest emergency service has worked with the not-for-profit MERC to develop a Memorandum of Understanding that ensures collaboration and cooperation in pursuit of delivering even more value to emergency services volunteers and the broader community than either organisation could achieve alone. Although the weekend of 22-24 November is based around the competition, a lot of effort is being invested into attracting the broader community to a genuinely fun, exciting and interesting free event. 22.01.2022 The "Burnover Drill" is one of the most important skills for WAs amazing 26,000 bushfire volunteers to master. Thankfully, the skill isnt needed very often on... the fireground, but for those who find themselves trapped and surrounded by fire burning at around 1,600 degrees, being able to get the whole crew into a vehicle and using the safety devices (including the deluge system being used in this photo) is literally life-saving.
