25.01.2022 We welcomed Drellan on board one of our Western Sydney buses yesterday, his first time catching public transport. Drellan, who has cerebral palsy, was taking assisted transport to and from his public school. However, he'll be starting TAFE soon to study information technology and needs to catch public transport to get there. We took Drellan out on his own private service for a training exercise with one of our bus trainers Andy so he could practice catching the bus and using ...the wheelchair ramp. After just a few goes, he was all smiles, confident and ready to catch his first real service. Our trainer showed him exactly which stand he would need to get the bus from, meaning Drellan was able to use a lift by himself for the first time too. #PublicTransport #AccessiblePublicTransport #CaringAboutPeople #DisabilityAwareness

25.01.2022 This week is #InvisibleDisabilitiesWeek - a time to raise awareness about invisible disabilities and bring more support to those that have them. Invisible Disabilities are certain kinds of disabilities that are not immediately apparent to others. This week, we'll be posting about various invisible disabilities and how we can improve public transport use for these people. There are a range of mental disabilities that affect people on a daily basis. Some examples include depres...sion, attention deficit disorder, schizophrenia, agoraphobia, and Autism. These disorders can be completely debilitating to the victim, and can make performing everyday tasks, such as catching public transport, extremely difficult, if not impossible. Susan Sohn from Think Outside the Chair said: "We need to be more understanding with so many invisible disabilities out there and be respectful of others. We need to understand if someone comes into a bus and we think there's nothing visibly wrong with them, they may still need that disabled seat. It's incumbent of us to be respectful and move without question if they ask for that seat because they do genuinely need it." #PublicTransport #InvisibleDisabilitiesWeek #SafePublicTransport #ThinkOutsideTheChair

25.01.2022 Our brand new state of the art workshop facility at our Grafton depot on the NSW mid-north coast is officially open! We were joined by Clarence Valley Mayor Jim Simmons and Vice President of the Grafton Chamber of Commerce Justin James yesterday to officially open the workshop. The $2.5 million redevelopment includes a four-bay workshop, drive-through wash bay, two-line undercover fuelling area, a brake testing unit, insulated roofing and industrial fans, new staff parking ar...eas, and a significant increase in the concrete hard stand area for bus parking. The redevelopment of our Grafton workshop is part of Busways’ commitment to providing our customers with safe, reliable bus services in Grafton and we're pleased to be investing in infrastructure in regional NSW. Busways Managing Director Byron Rowe said: "Our investment in upgrading the Grafton depot workshops is a commitment to the service standards we will deliver. Fleet safety, comfort, and cleanliness is so important to provide an exceptional onboard experience for our passengers and drivers." Below is a short behind the scenes video of yesterday's (socially distanced) event. #PublicTransport #CaringAboutPeople #Redevelopment #LocalEconomy

22.01.2022 We'd like to remind Busways customers that it is mandatory to wear a face mask in the Western Sydney and Central Coast areas. In line with NSW Health guidelines, a face mask must be worn when travelling on a bus and when waiting at the bus stop or bus interchange. An on the spot fine of $200 applies (enforced by NSW Police) for non-compliance. Children aged 12 and under are exempt but are encouraged to wear face masks where practicable. ... We'd like to thank customers for wearing their mask helping to keep you and our bus drivers safe from COVID-19. #PublicTransport #FaceMask #COVID19 #Safety

20.01.2022 As students return to school for the last term of 2020 today in NSW, we'd like to remind motorists to keep students safe by slowing down to 40km/hour when you see bus lights flash. The flashing lights on the back of buses warn motorists that school children are getting on or off the bus. Children are most at risk in the minutes after they get off the bus as the can be unpredictable in their movements. Drivers should look out for children who are crossing the road or waiting ...to cross. #PubclicTransport #SchoolBuses #BusSafetyTips #SchoolBusSafety #BusFlashingLights See more

20.01.2022 #invisibledisabilitiesweek Chronic fatigue is a disease that occurs more commonly in women and has symptoms such as sleep abnormalities, pain and general fatigue that are made worse by exertion. There are many hurdles for those with chronic fatigue when it comes to catching public transport, including psychological and physical. Crowds on public transport or no available seats can cause considerable pain for people with chronic fatigue.... Susan Sohn from Think Outside the Chair said: "People with this disability can find it difficult to even leave the house so for them to catch public transport is a big thing. They can sometimes feel isolated from society and be treated unkindly by others. This disease is challenging. Everyone should be treated equally and people should not be bothered by who is sitting where on a bus and why." Pictured below is just one of our special messages that are being displayed across our fleet for Invisible Disabilities Week. #PublicTransport #InvisibleDisabilitiesWeek #SafePublicTransport #ThinkOutsideTheChair

17.01.2022 Be kind, be patient on public transport. This week we’re reminding our customers and bus drivers that not all disabilities are visible. Customers with invisible disabilities may still appreciate or need help when catching public transport even though it may not look like it. Everyone’s understanding can go a long way to make sure they have a positive journey. There are lots of invisible disabilities that can affect a person’s ability to read a timetable, understand their su...rroundings, stand, or sit in some areas of the bus, quickly get on or off a bus or know when to get off the bus. Cognitive disabilities we often can’t see include autism, anxiety, deafness, and dementia. Another key invisible disability that can make it harder for some people on public transport is arthritis. For many suffering with arthritis, it can be a lifelong battle. There are three types of arthritis osteoarthritis which is the most common, rheumatoid arthritis which is an autoimmune disease, and psoriatic arthritis which is a skin condition. The main symptoms include joint pain and stiffness, swelling and reduced range of motion. This is just one of the many debilitating indivisible disabilities that someone on your bus could be managing. Please remember to stop, think, and offer help to someone if it looks like they need it. Kindness is free! #PublicTransport #InvisibleDisabilitiesWeek #VisibleCourage

15.01.2022 This week is National Road Safety Week - an annual initiative highlighting the impact of road trauma and ways to reduce it. Busways is on board with the national campaign as an opportunity to remind all drivers and other road users of the influence they have on our roads. Each day, there is a different theme to create awareness about the many elements to road safety. Today's theme is 'Take the Pledge, lead the way'. Busways bus drivers are taking the Pledge this week to ‘dr...ive so others survive’. 15.01.2022 As we continue to look at the important aspects around road safety as part of National Road Safety Week this week, our team gathered today (physically distanced) at Busways' Lonsdale depot in Adelaide to discuss the important topic. The key theme of this campaign is 'drive so others survive'. Busways' Managing Director Byron Rowe spoke about the importance of educating ourselves about road safety and the responsibility we all have on our roads. 15.01.2022 This week we're saying goodbye to one of our longest serving bus drivers, Peter, as he retires after 39 years with Busways. Peter has worked at our Grafton depot on the NSW north coast for his entire career at the company, operating route, school and long-term charters. "I've always loved receiving positive feedback from passengers and school children, it makes my day," Peter said of his time as a bus driver.... He also added the experience of learning to drive a bus many years ago is very different to what our drivers go through now with a new and modern fleet to operate. "The experience of driving a manual crash gear box with a full load of senior citizen passengers, hoping you're going to get to the top of a steep hill is one of my fond memories," he said. At 83 years old, Peter is ready to enjoy his retirement years taking holidays and writing a recollection of his life in the Grafton area. Thank you for your many years of professional service to Busways, Peter. #PublicTransport #Retirement #EmployeeAppreciation #GoingAboveAndBeyond

12.01.2022 Smile, you’re on camera! Busways’ Central Coast bus users are now benefitting from our upgrade of on-board CCTV systems. CCTV is a proven method to deter vandalism and anti-social behaviour on board buses so that everyone can have a better journey experience. With up to eight cameras on each bus, all areas inside and outside the bus are overseen - this means anti-social behaviour can be pinpointed and addressed directly with police if necessary. This has led to fewer on-board incidents. Safe travelling! #PublicTransport #BusSafety #ZeroTolerance #CCTV

11.01.2022 A reminder that NSW Health strongly recommends customers on public transport wear a face mask. Masks are a complementary line of defence in limiting the spread of COVID-19 in addition to other key measures including staying at home if unwell, practicing physical distancing and practicing good hand hygiene. Providing public transport that is as safe and as clean as possible will assist with the recovery from the COVID-19 outbreak.... 03.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day - a day to commemorate those who have previously served and who continue to serve today. One of our Port Macquarie bus drivers Wayne Hopwood (pictured) said: "We acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country and we need to acknowledge our responsibility to work for peace they fought hard to achieve. During times of war, individual acts of heroism occur frequently; only a few are ever recorded and receive official recognition...." Wayne Hopwood enlisted in the Army at the age of 20. He served in the Royal Corps of Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers from 1977 to 1981. Wayne’s Father Fredrick Hopwood was conscripted into the Army in the 1950’s as an infantryman. Lest we forget. #RemembranceDay
