21.01.2022 Protecting wildlife is so important. I’m in Hervey Bay today meeting with Butchulla Country and People as we work in partnership to increase safety & education ...for people visiting K’gari (Fraser Island) and encountering dingoes. I have announced higher penalties for people who intentionally feed dingoes, new fenced camping sites and a new Butchulla community education ranger. A genuine partnership between the Butchulla and QPWS in the co-stewardship of K’gari will continue to be at the heart of work into the future.

13.01.2022 Australian Army Warrant Officer Class Two Nathan Sandow is a proud Butchulla man who is celebrating @NationalNAIDOC Week in the Middle East. Nathan is an ammuni...tion technician and is currently deployed as part of Force Support Element 10 on Operation Accordion. Nathan says when he enlisted, there weren’t a lot of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Defence, but things have changed. Now we have our mob of Indigenous members here, it is our people working with the Defence community. Everyone needs to talk about reconciliation, from there, we can all work together, he said. NAIDOC Week is a chance for all Australians to celebrate the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. https://news.defence.gov.au/people/deployed-long-way-kgari

12.01.2022 NAIDOC 2019 Poster: Charmaine Mumbulla, a proud Kaurna and Narungga woman, is this year’s winner of the prestigious National NAIDOC Poster Competition. Ms Mumbulla’s artwork ‘Awaken’ was judged by the National NAIDOC Committee to have best captured the spirit of the 2019 NAIDOC theme: Voice. Treaty. Truth Let’s work together for a shared future.... "Awaken" depicts an early dawn light rising over Uluru, symbolising continued spiritual and unbroken connection to the land. The circles at the base of Uluru represent the historic gathering in May 2017 of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders, who adopted the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Ms Mumbulla said that she hoped her artwork plays an important part in a national discussion towards the proper recognition of Aboriginal and Torre Strait Islander people in this country. Ms Mumbulla has a background as a lawyer as well as in education and graphic design. She runs a creative agency called Mumbulla Creative. Free copies of the 2019 National NAIDOC Poster are available through the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet’s regional network. Visit the NAIDOC website to find out more about this year’s artwork and winning artist Charmaine Mumbulla and to download a digital copy of the 2019 National NAIDOC Poster.

02.01.2022 Great to see some coverage from Fraser coast chronicle.

01.01.2022 Historical truth was one of the themes for NAIDOC 2019. So here are some facts about First European Contacts provided by Fraser Island Defenders Organisation (FIDO). "There is evidence that Europeans may have made contact with Fraser Island Aborigines more than 500 years ago. Lead, identified as having come from the Iberian Peninsula (Spain), was found in an old buried shore line near Hook Point on Fraser Island, amongst pumice released in about 1500. It may have come from th...e Christado de Mendonca 1521-22 expedition. His three Portuguese caravelles set off from Malacca (Sumatra), which was then Portuguese territory, to explore what was then nominally Spanish territory in what is now Eastern Australia. Records of Portuguese exploration were lost in the great Lisbon fires of 1755, but maps of Portuguese origin showing Fraser Island as an island survived in Britain and France. Two clay pipes discovered in middens near Indian Head were of the type used by 17th century Dutch navigators for trading. These suggest some contact between Dutch sailors and Aborigines in this period, although there is no direct evidence that the contact occurred on Fraser Island as the pipes could have been traded."
