25.01.2022 F L A S H B A C K F R I D A Y// It’s been great to have local cricket back and seeing sport played outdoors again after a challenging year. The Geelong Cricket Association used to play regularly against traveling international teams. The last fixture however was Jan 7th 1983 when Richard Hadlee’s New Zealanders defeated the home side by almost 100 runs. Hadlee got amongst them with the bat and his 6 sixes into Moorabool St were a feature of his 117. Other legends that played for NZ on the day inc Geoff Howarth, Martin Crowe, Glenn Turner, Lance Cairns & Danny Morrison. Originally licensed in 1850’s and known as the Limerick Castle in the late 1800’s, it finally closed and was demolished to make way for Westfield not long after the turn of the century. 02.01.2022 F L A S H B A C K F R I D A Y// This is no ordinary battleship. This is HMAS Geelong. And why have we heard little about it you ask? Because it sank in 1944. The vessel was one of 60 Bathurst-class minesweepers built for WW2 and one of only 3 lost. The Geelong collided with the US Navys York off the coast of New Guinea on 18 Oct 1944. No lives were lost. Up until that time, it had seen active service throughout the Pacific. It visited our city once it was built in a ceremonial capacity. Its other claim to fame was that it was anchored in Sydney Harbour on the night of the Japanese midget submarine attack; 31 May 1942.
