25.01.2022 Seddon & Yarraville Glasgow Estate (Footscray) from the late 1800s (approx 1884) Framed A1 Print Glasgow Estate Footscray Heritage Map, from approximately 1884. Once under the hammer, land was sold for 2 per foot and by 1888 was largely sold out and classified as a local estate sale benchmark of success. Originally known as Belgravia, Seddon was officially declared a suburb in 1906. Named after Richard Seddon, the once New Zealand Prime Minister from 1893 to 1906, who reside...d there with his wife before he moved to Bendigo and later to New Zealand. His wife was the Daughter of John Stewart Spottiswoode, in which Spotswood is derived from. This huge historical estate map includes: Gamon Street, Tongue Street, William Street (now Barnet Street), Mackay Street, Somerville Road, Railway Place (now Pentland Parade, Bellairs Avenue), Princess Street, Berry Street, Fairlie Street, Stephen Street, Nicholson Street, Hyde Street. 19.01.2022 Yarraville 27 Choice Sites Auction Plan 1889 A1 Framed Print This Yarraville auction plan from 1889 outlining the 27 choice sites for purchase is possibly the most spectacular piece in our Yarraville collection to date. The gradient background colour paired with a vibrant red YARRAVILLE title is simply brilliant in its own right. Partnered with the central residential and business location map, and engraved sketches of a bygone Anderson St make this a must-have for all that c...all Yarraville home. The sketches containing a view of the north side and south side of Anderson Street in 1889 is simply stunning. Mr. Kelly’s Railway Hotel was proving to be so popular that a major renovation and expansion to increase bar area and accommodation services started only a year after. The residential houses pictured along the south side may be a wow moment for us today, but Yarraville’s shopping centre was originally divided between Stephen and Anderson Streets. The rebuilding of the railway station in 1893 shifted the commercial focus back to Anderson Street, and these dwellings pictured were shortly replaced. The auction plan also includes a landscape drawing from an old land sale plan in 1853 of Yarraville and Footscray. Possibly appealing to the pioneering spirit of purchasers. This beautiful pastels colouring map also shows the early suburb name of HOTHAM appearing (now North Melbourne) with beautiful cartographic detailing, especially around Studly Park and the Botanical Gardens.... Sands and McDougall started publishing as Sands and Kenny and in 1857 produced their first Melbourne Directory. Claus Ebeling (1859-1948) grew up on the Victorian goldfields and trained as a blacksmith in Maryborough. He bought Zimmerman's Yarraville forge for $25 and took on carriage-making, ironmaking and engineering. His sons and grandson ran the business until the 1950s. Employees remember Claus with affection. His first wife Frances died after bearing their second son. He built Glenara for his second wife, Elizabeth (nee Rentoul), who bore a third son. Claus was active in the Hope of Yarraville Masonic Lodge and a founder of the sport Trugo. . . .
