25.01.2022 At 11:00am today Australia paused for Remembrance Day, marking the 102nd anniversary of the Armistice that ended the First World War on 11 November, 1918. Between 1914 and 1918 a newly federated Australia sent 414,000 of their citizens to face the horrors of modern industrialized war. On this day each year, people across the nation observe a minute’s silence in memory of those who have died or suffered in war and on peacekeeping and humanitarian operations.[1] Did you know... that more than 3,000 Australian civilian nurses volunteered for active service during the First World War? 25.01.2022 According to Cancer Council Australia, testicular cancer is the second most common cancer in young men (aged 18 to 39) excluding non-melanoma skin cancer. The most common type is seminoma, which usually occurs in men aged between 25 and 50 years. The other main type is non-seminoma, which is more common in younger men, usually in their 20s. In 2016, 850 new cases of testicular cancer were diagnosed in Australia. For Australian men, the risk of being diagnosed with testicular... cancer by age 85 is 1 in 202. The rate of men diagnosed with testicular cancer has grown by more than 50% over the past 30 years, however the reason for this is not known. Testicular cancer may cause no symptoms. The most common symptom is a painless swelling or a lump in a testicle. Less common symptoms include: feeling of heaviness in the scrotum change in the size or shape of the testicle feeling of unevenness pain or ache in the lower abdomen, the testicle or scrotum back pain enlargement or tenderness of the breast tissue (due to hormones created by cancer cells)." 24.01.2022 WHAT IS POLIO? For many Australians, Polio is a devastating illness that has greatly impacted their daily lives. Polio is a contagious viral illness where in severe cases may causes nerve injury leading to paralysis, difficulty breathing and sometimes death. While Australia was declared free of Polio in 2000, the virus continues to affect several children and adults in parts of Asia and Africa.... The virus usually enters the environment in the faeces of someone who is infected. In areas with poor sanitation, the virus can be easily spread into the water supply or by touch. Since polio virus is highly contagious, direct contact with an infected individual can also cause infection of the virus. Keen to discuss immunisations with your Doctor? 24.01.2022 Did you know men are much more likely to recognise the physical symptoms, rather than the emotional signs, of depression? According to Beyond Blue, these physical symptoms can include things like feeling tired all the time, or changes in your weight, whether that’s losing weight or putting on a few extra kilos. Some of the signs of changes in mood can be different for men, too. Men are more likely to report feeling angry or irritable, for example, rather than feeling low. One... of the other telltale signs is a loss of interest in activities you usually enjoy, whether that’s getting together with your mates, working in the garden, or just getting outside for a walk or a run. 21.01.2022 National Stroke Week. This year were celebrating everyday Australians who know and can recognise the signs of stroke. They are F.A.S.T. Heroes! Across Australia, F.A.S.T. Heroes can save lives, simply by knowing and recognising the F.A.S.T. (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) signs of stroke and calling an ambulance immediately. They know that stroke is always a medical emergency and time is critical.... Face Check their face. Has their mouth drooped? Arms Can they lift both arms? Speech Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you? Time Is critical. If you see any of these signs call 000 straight away. #Nationalstrokeweek https://strokefoundation.org.au//National-stroke-/Register

21.01.2022 We get this question a lot, especially following the requirement for people to wear face masks in other parts of the country. Face masks can be a useful measur...e to help control sustained community transmission. Sustained community transmission is when we have multiple cases of locally acquired COVID-19 where contact tracing and testing is unable to identify how the person was infected. At the moment, there is no evidence to suggest that Queensland has any sustained community transmission. If you live in the greater region of Brisbane, a face mask might be suitable if: You are in a situation where social distancing cannot be maintained, i.e. public transport or a busy shopping centre If your GP has told you to wear one If you are caring for someone who has COVID-19 If you are attending a GP clinic, hospital or ED If you are sick and getting a COVID-19 test Face masks alone will not protect you from COVID-19. It is also vital that other COVID safe practices are followed, including: Washing hands often and thoroughly Maintaining a social distancing Covering coughs or sneezes Staying at home if unwell Getting tested if you're showing any signs of COVID-19.

19.01.2022 Protect your baby from whooping cough According to the Department of Health, Whooping cough (also known as pertussis) is a highly infectious bacterial infection that spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It affects the lungs and airways and may cause a person to cough violently and uncontrollably, making it difficult to breath. People who are not vaccinated are at high risk of catching whooping cough and whooping cough can cause serious complications in babie...s such as brain damage, pneumonia and may be fatal. Babies under 6 weeks of age are too young to get vaccinated against whooping cough themselves and do not complete their primary vaccination course against whooping cough until 6 months of age. The most effective way to protect your baby from whooping cough is to receive a whooping cough vaccine during pregnancy. By getting vaccinated, you pass on protective antibodies through the placenta to your baby that protects them for the first few months of life when they are most vulnerable. Doing this has shown to reduce whooping cough disease in babies aged less than 3 months by over 90%. The whooping cough vaccine is free for pregnant women through the National Immunisation Program. 17.01.2022 NAIDOC Week 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. In light of NAIDOC Week, we would like to highlight the importance of preventative healthcare for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. According to RACGP, life expectancy was around 10 years lower for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in 201012 when compared with other Australians. There is strong evidence that ...the delivery of clinical preventive health services, especially within a primary healthcare context, improves health outcomes. [1] In an effort to Close the Gap, our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients are eligible for a comprehensive health check. This bulk-billed health assessment aims to help improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders health. In this assessment our practice nurse may go over your initial tests and medical history. Your GP will then provide you with a final assessment and recommend appropriate follow up care. [2] As a primary healthcare provider, our job is not only to ensure the health and wellbeing of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients but to reinstate confidence and improvement person by person, family by family and onto generations to come. 13.01.2022 November? Mo-vember! This month our Mo-Bro’s and Mo-Sister’s take a stand for Men’s Health. According to AMA Australia, Men are known to have greater vulnerability to various health disorders across their lifespan; they are more likely than women to experience serious health problems; men have a higher mortality rate, and they die in greater numbers than women from almost all non-sex-specific health problems. The data on Australian men’s health also show higher rates of sub...stance abuse, higher rates of suicide, and higher rates of mental health problems. These barriers are caused, in the main, because Australian men are less likely to seek treatment from a general practitioner or other health professional, and are less likely to have in place the supports and social connections needed when they experience physical and mental health problems. Compared to women, Australian men not only see their GP less often, but when they do access a health professional it is for shorter consultations, and typically when a condition or illness is advanced. [1] While Movember covers all areas of Men’s Health, there is a large focus on the three biggest health issues facing men: mental health and suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer [2]. All month long we’ll be spreading awareness of these conditions. We hope this will help bring light to the crisis that currently stands in Men’s Health, encourage those to seek advice when needed, and take advantage of preventative health measures. 04.01.2022 Being a parent is hugely rewarding, but it’s also hard work especially at first. According to Beyond Blue, dealing with changes in your everyday routine and sleepless nights as you learn to look after your baby can take lots of energy, emotional commitment and patience. Adjusting to parenting is a process of trial and error, good days and bad, and it’s common to take a while to feel comfortable and confident in your new role. Most new parent’s need a bit of extra support f...rom family and friends, especially at the beginning. This could include practical stuff like helping with household chores or watching the baby or other children to give you a break, or emotional support just being there to listen. Think about what would be most useful for you, communicate this to the people around you, and make sure you accept any offers! This is particularly true if you’re a single parent. Having a network of friends, other parents, neighbours and relatives you can call on to help out can make a massive difference you don’t have to go it alone. If you’re experiencing ongoing distress that doesn’t go away on its own and begins to affect your ability to function day-to-day, or you’re not feeling close or connected to your baby after a few weeks, it’s important to talk to your health professional. This may be a sign that you are experiencing anxiety, depression or another mental health condition. Feel like you need someone to talk to about what you may be feeling as a parent?
