25.01.2022 Heather Joan Furnell née Levin (21.03.1949 28.05.2020) Mrs. Furnell was a well-known resident of the Walgett Shire and a much-loved employee at Bourke-Walgett School of Distance Education (BWSODE). Hailing from the Blue Mountains, Heather relocated to the district in 1970 when she married David Furnell and moved to their property Minnamurra on the Collarenebri-Walgett Road. Heather’s first post of employment in Walgett was at the High School teaching Mathematics. Over ...the years she also worked as an aid to the rural counsellor and as the CAP resource officer based at the Walgett Primary School. In 2000, Heather started working at the Walgett Distance Education Centre fulltime as the Senior Administration Manager, which we now know as BWSODE. After 17 years she officially retired in May of 2017. Heather not only was an invaluable work colleague, but was also extremely involved within the Walgett CWA branch, Walgett Show Society and other local committees. Heather died peacefully surrounded by her family on Thursday, 28 May her funeral was held on Wednesday, 3 June. The church was adorned with beautiful native flowers, the voices of Bon Jovi and Susan Boyle and sweet memories of Heather. Mrs Furnell was grace, peace and patience in motion we at the BWSODE feel very blessed to have known and worked with such an extraordinary lady. She will be forever in our hearts and sorely missed. 19.01.2022 Week 9 - Integration Days Who doesn’t love a two-day version of Integration Day!? Due to COVID-19 we have had to alter the way we run end of term events. Usually we would be camping out under the stars at the Walgett Showground, however that didn’t stop us from having an awesome couple of days together at school. Major projects conducted over the two days were lantern making and tie-dying. Who doesn’t need a bit more light in their life and we all had a groovy time doing it! Prue Smith | Assistant Principal

18.01.2022 Farewell Miss Hall! The time has come to say goodbye to Miss Hall as she heads off on maternity leave. I have no idea where this time has gone, however I'm sure if you asked her, the last month has probably felt like a million years. Lydia, you have been amazing. Your dedication to the kids, your work ethic and your presence at school will be sorely missed by all. We wish you all the best as you begin the amazing journey into motherhood and we can't wait to meet the new addi...tion soon. Prue Smith | Assistant Principal

18.01.2022 Welcome, Mrs. Fanning! Even though we have lost an invaluable staff member, we are lucky enough to welcome another to our amazing team. A big, warm welcome to Mrs. Lee Fanning who has come to us from the Walgett Primary School. We are so fortunate to have another teacher on board who brings with her a wealth of knowledge and understanding of primary education and working within geographically isolated areas. I'm sure our DE community will welcome her with open arms and I know she can't wait to get to know you all! Prue Smith | Assistant Principal

15.01.2022 We LOVE Integration Days! Another wonderful day had by all. Seeing everyone’s smiling faces as they walk through the front door in the morning is an amazing feeling. However, when that sense of happiness and enjoyment hangs around all day, it really validates how invaluable these learning experiences are for our students. We can’t wait for our next encounter in Week 9. Prue Smith | Assistant Principal

13.01.2022 Halloween in Bourke Albeit a week late, students from the Bourke Centre enjoyed a Halloween themed Integration Day on Friday. Students engaged in dance, yoga, paper craft, learnt about the history of Halloween, and were treated to a professional pumpkin carving tutorial. Their faces said it all when they were asked to assist in the cleaning out of the pumpkin goo! Another great day! Mrs. Lorberg... A/Assistant Principal See more

13.01.2022 Integration Days are Back! With the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in schools, BWSODE has been lucky enough to squeeze in two Integration Days towards the end of this term. 09.01.2022 Final Assembly for Term 1 This morning the Bourke Centre hosted our final assembly for Term 1. Our Principals awards went to Darcy Hartog for his Literacy work and Maisie Fisher for consistent high-quality work. Our assembly theme this week was 'Full of Fun' and students shared their most enjoyable moment of Term 1. Staff were entertained by some wonderful pieces of writing and beautiful artwork. We heard stories about mini-schools, Bubble Soccer, water sports and grass. Our assembly ended with some amazing dance moves being shown off to the song 'Counting Stars'. We are fortunate that in such times we are still able to come together to share these experiences in such a way. Stay tuned for our Easter Hat Parade (via satellite) next week. We look forward to seeing you there. Kirsty Lorberg | A/Assistant Principal
