25.01.2022 Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is one of the best ways to support digestion and we have some in our clinic at By Design Holistic Health! Apple cider vinegar stimulates the stomach to produce stomach acid to break down proteins. Stomach acids also assist with the absorption of minerals in our food. They also act as a defence mechanism, killing bad bacteria and preventing them from entering the gut. Stomach acids are also important for the next stage of digestion: the release of pan...creatic enzymes to break down carbohydrates. Without enough stomach acid, you may experience uncomfortable symptoms like bloating and gas. We recommend adding 10ml of our organic ACV to a small glass of water and drink 20-30 minutes before your meals, three times per day. Youll be surprised at the difference it makes! As a bonus, ACV also boosts metabolism so its a helpful trick to use in your weight loss program too.

24.01.2022 BLOG: A Natural Approach to Treating Acne Acne is often associated only with the years of adolescence however, unfortunately it can often continue to appear throughout our adult years too. In fact up to half of all men and women experience acne well into their 30s while some suffer for many years more. The impact of acne is far more reaching than simply blemishes on the skin. Alarmingly, chronic acne sufferers are more likely to experience anxiety, depression, suicidal though...ts, poorer employment outcomes and lower self-esteem than non-acne sufferers. Dealing with acne is not trivial. What causes acne? Acne vulgaris is an inflammatory disease of the skin which affects those areas which contain sebaceous glands including the nose, forehead, cheeks, chin, back and trunk. There are many different causes of acne, and as naturopaths, we look at the location of the pimple to determine the root problem and formulate a successful treatment. For example, the jawline is related to hormones and lymphatic system, while pimples on the forehead relate to stress and excess oil production. To finish reading this blog post on treating acne holistically and what are some things you can do to start healing your skin follow this link to our website: https://www.bdhh.com.au/a-natural-approach-to-treating-acne/

22.01.2022 Do you suffer from heavy and painful periods? Are there days you can’t get out of bed the pain is just so bad? You may have endometriosis. The distressing pain and infertility associated with endometriosis has been documented for over 4,000 years. In fact, history chronicles many failed bizarre and terrifying treatments which led physicians to conclude that sufferers were actually hysterical, promiscuous, possessed or mentally ill! It wasn’t until the Austrian pathologist Kar...l von Rokitansky first identified microscopic ‘fibrous tumours’ that resembled endometrial glands in the 1860s that a physical cause was connected to the pain and infertility of endometriosis. Today, 1 to 10% of all women, and up to 50% of infertile women, have endometriosis. Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the endometrium (lining of the uterus) grows outside the uterus. Typically, endometriosis is associated with excess oestrogen as it stimulates the growth of ectopic endometrial tissue. Common symptoms of endometriosis include chronic pelvic pain, increased period pain and heavy bleeding, pain on intercourse and impaired fertility. If you would like to find out more and discover natural ways you can help manage and treat this condition, check out our latest blog post at https://www.bdhh.com.au/endometriosis-a-naturopathic-persp/.

22.01.2022 Every day, were exposed to a huge range of environmental toxins as we go about our lives whether thats at home, work or out and about. These toxins can take the form of toxic heavy metals like lead, mercury, cadmium, and aluminium, as well as herbicides, pesticides, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other persistent organic pollutants (POPs). All these environmental toxins can have a significant impact on our health by disruption sensitive biological systems. They ha...ve been linked to a range of serious illnesses and diseases from respiratory problems, infertility, endocrine disorders to cancer. In todays world, these toxins are virtually impossible to avoid but there are some things you can do to reduce your exposure. One of these ways is to choose organic foods, or at least partially organic by choosing the dirty dozen. The dirty dozen are the foods that are contaminated with more pesticides than any other crops. Long term pesticide exposure for example, has been linked to the development of Parkinsons disease; asthma; depression and anxiety; attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); and cancer, including leukaemia and non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Its also interesting to note the effects of pesticide exposure has on children. In 2012, the American Academy of Paediatrics issued an important report that said children have unique susceptibilities to [pesticide residues] potential toxicity. The academy cited research that linked pesticide exposures in early life to paediatric cancers, decreased cognitive function and behavioural problems. [Keep in mind this data comes from the Environmental Working Group (EWG) that is based in the USA. Some research has been done to ascertain any overlaps with Australia and similar conclusions have been found. Researchers state that Australias version of the dirty dozen would include- apples, cabbage, strawberries, capsicum, tomatoes, celery, lettuce, mushrooms, nectarines, grapes, cucumber and oranges, the most important to buy organic being apples, strawberries and lettuce. In fact, broccoli, lettuce, mushrooms and oranges all had higher levels on contaminants than the USA! Other foods to err on the side of caution and also buy organic are spinach, culinary herbs, cherries, blueberries, broccoli and asparagus].

20.01.2022 Over the next couple of months at BDHH, we are focusing on the importance of gut health and in particular, food intolerances and reactivity. Why? Because a healthy digestive system is essential to the function of every organ in your body. In the last decade or so, research has only just begun to catch up with what Hippocrates, the father of medicine, said over two thousand years ago: that all disease begins in the gut. Studies are now showing that what goes on in the gut ...affects what’s going on in the rest of the body. So how do you know you have poor gut health? If you’re experiencing constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, flatulence, urgency to go to the toilet, reflux, brain fog and fatigue- these are all signs that something is not quite right. Ultimately, having a healthy gut is the key to optimal health and vitality and that is why it is so important to take care of your gut and optimise your ability to digest your food. So what can you do to improve and optimise your gut health? Read our latest blog to discover our top tips on what you can do starting today: https://www.bdhh.com.au/top-ten-tips-to-improve-your-gut-h/

17.01.2022 What time is going to be better in doing a detox when youre stuck at home and cant eat out?! Not only is it a good time to do a spring clean of your house, its also a good time to do a spring clean of your body. Heres why.. Every day we are exposed to thousands of toxins. Industrial pollutants, petrochemicals, heavy metals, pesticides, food additives, pharmaceuticals, cleaning products, hygiene products and cosmetics and plastic compounds are now a given part of everyday ...life. Whilst the human body has a natural capacity to process and eliminate toxins, those systems are now under immense pressure from the level of assault inflicted from modern-day life. In fact, a growing body of evidence concludes that these toxins have the ability to inhibit our bodies vital functions and play a causal role in many diseases. Minimising the toxic burden and offsetting their impact, both through reducing exposure and also supporting the bodys own house-keeping detoxification processes are important factors in mitigating toxin-induced disease. That is why for the months of August and September, we are offering 10% off our detoxification products including: - Thermophase Detox Essentials - G-Tox Express - Vital Greens powder - Chlorophyll - Spirulina These products are highly effective in helping your body metabolise and eliminate not only every day toxins but also heavy metals. Quote BDHH04 in store in August and September to receive 10% off our detoxification supplements. *if you would like more information on detoxification programs or supplements, ask at reception to speak to one of our naturopaths on 9739 6409.

17.01.2022 We are excited to be offering 10% off some of our most popular supplements!! If you suffer with constant bloating, constipation/diarrhoea, headaches and fatigue, you may really benefit from these supplements. These symptoms may reveal you are suffering from food allergies or sensitivities. Allergies are considered one of the fastest growing chronic diseases in Australia. Reactivity to food doesn’t only affect one body system either. It can affect the digestive tract, skin, br...ain, muscles and joints and even your lungs. It can also lead to leaky gut where your gut lining becomes porous, allowing foreign particles such as pathogens, bacteria, viruses and more to enter into your bloodstream. This can wreak havoc on your health and lead to a host of chronic diseases. Healing the gut through elimination of the trigger and supplementing with certain essential nutrients is key to addressing any food reaction. That is why for the months of February and March, we are offering 10% off our allergy and reactivity supplements including: - Alergenics - Alergeze - Digestex - MetaPure EPA/DHA (fish oil) - Meta Pure Algal oil (vegan fish oil) Quote BDHH01 in store in February and March to receive 10% off our allergy and reactivity products. *if you would like more information on treating food intolerances and/or would like to undergo testing, ask at reception to speak to one of our naturopaths.

16.01.2022 HERB HIGHLIGHT: Comfrey Our theme for the month is pain and inflammation so today, we want to highlight the herb, Comfrey. Comfrey is one of those miracle plants. It was once commonly known as Knitbone because of its amazing ability to heal broken bones and knit them back together. The botanical name Symphytum means to unite.... The incredible healing action this plant has on broken bones and wounds comes from a constituent contained in the leaf and root called allantoin. This compound is a cell proliferant which helps to regenerate wounded areas of the body and speed up new healthy cell growth. The plant is also excellent to use topically on bruises, sprains, pulled muscles, swellings and fractures. It is a wonderful first aid herb to have on hand in case you or someone you know twists their ankle. But comfrey must be used with caution. It is such an excellent and speedy wound-healing remedy that it actually should not be used on deep wounds or lacerations. It could potentially heal the top layer of skin before the bottom layer, resulting in an abscess. So please do avoid comfrey for major skin wounds, and use it only for bruises, sprains and minor cuts and scratches. It is also not to be used internally. That said, there is no reason to fear this plant when it is used correctly! There are many ways to use comfrey topically on the body through compresses, poultices, liniments and infused oils. We have a cream in clinic that can be applied directly to the affected area.

14.01.2022 Think you may have candida overgrowth? Here are the common symptoms: - bloating/constipation/diarrhoea - fatigue - brain fog - mood swings... - extreme sugar cravings - eczema or skin rashes - white coating on the tongue - thick, curd-like vaginal discharge - painful and/or frequent urination Candida is a term used to refer to an overgrowth of yeast in the body. 14.01.2022 Hectic lifestyles will usually result in parents reaching for the quickest food options available, and this usually comes from a packet. Which food is picked is usually the product that appears to be the healthiest option, makes the best health claims and which one tastes the best. Unless youve studied nutrition it can be very difficult (and time consuming) to stand in the aisles analysing each product, and then youve got to make the final decision will my child even ea...t this? So we place our trust in the companies. Surely they know what theyre doing and have our best interests at heart? Food companies know that parents want to do the best for their child, and will market their products based around a health perk, often hoping that this will distract the consumers from the other nasties in the food, or the lack of other important nutrients such as fibre, vitamins and minerals. Some of the foods most susceptible to this are breakfast cereals, formulas, and snack foods. Products that are rich in calcium/iron/protein for healthy bones/energy/muscles can sometimes be rich in sugar, low in fibre and/or high in preservatives. This does not balance out, creating a health food. In the last few decades, companies have made food more colourful, tasty and less perishable through the use of additives. Some of these additives have been well tested and have shown to be safe however, others have been linked to many health problems such as ADHD and behavioural difficulties, asthma and skin problems. To make it easier for you to decide what option youre going to buy at the supermarket, here is a list of the additives you and your child should avoid.

Stress in the short term is manageable, but when stress is prolonged, it can wreak havoc on our body. 11.01.2022 Ever wondered what the difference between an osteopath, chiropractor and physiotherapist is? Physiotherapy and chiropractic medicine have many things in common. Both treat musculoskeletal issues to reduce pain and increase mobility and stamina. The main difference is that a chiropractor most often uses manipulation techniques which are aimed at adjusting the joints of the spine and limbs and a physiotherapist uses mobilisation and educational techniques. Chiropractors may als...o choose to use alternative methods such as acupuncture and dry needling to enhance their treatments and they also take x-rays which are called for in cases of pathology and trauma. Physiotherapy mobilisation techniques encompass more than just massage and are usually accompanied by exercise and electrical therapies in order to restore normal body movement. An osteopath, unlike chiropractors and physiotherapists focuses on the entire body rather than on just the muscular and spinal system. They explore the underlying causes rather than just dealing with the consequences. They often combine various techniques, such as body manipulation, massage and physical therapy. If you would like to book an appointment with one of our trusted and qualified osteopaths, simply call 03 9739 6409 or book an appointment online at bdhh.com.au.

08.01.2022 Coping with CoVid Feels a bit like groundhog day, doesnt it? Cases of Covid-19 have risen again and the Yarra Ranges, along with all of metropolitan Melbourne, is now in six weeks of Stage 3 lockdown. Yet I know how caring our community is and that together we can cultivate the resilience to ride this out. There will be challenges ahead that may affect our health and wellbeing, and these may compound in the presence of social isolation. So lets look at some ways that might... help. Many of us feel immense gratitude for living in the Yarra Valley. Our daily walk allows us the freedom to breathe sweet-smelling air filtered through the forests that surround our towns. A stark contrast to those less fortunate stuck inside high rise concrete buildings. And yet, it can be stressful for many. Prolonged mental agitation will flare up any pre-existing health condition, whether you suffer insomnia, fatigue, have an autoimmune condition or a skin rash, ongoing stress will raise cortisol levels in your body which can lead to increases in inflammation and discomfort. A recent report on the ABC highlighted that loneliness significantly affects 18-25-year-olds and those older than 70. Its well established in the literature that social connectedness is a key pillar of good health and its absence can increase our risk to a range of health conditions. So its more important than ever to call family and friends, arrange regular Facetime chats, and use social media constructively. Here are three more simple ways to fortify your physical and mental resilience and help make the best of a difficult situation. Learn to relax and connect to your breath: Take up meditation, Tai Chi, or yoga. Purposely slow down and spend time in nature. These techniques will help harmonize your hypothalamus and reduce excess cortisol production from your adrenal glands. Seek out an experienced online teacher or class and commit to a course to really reap the benefits. Turn your attention to eating as well as you can. A balanced, well rounded whole food diet will help immensely. You may need to consult a professional if you have unique needs or a pre-existing health condition. The research will agree the positive effect on your gut microbiome will flow on to your mental wellbeing too. Exercise, with a friend if you can. Suitable exercise is like the glue that holds it all together. We were born to move and even if its just a 20-minute walk after lunch or stretching between tasks, exercise helps connect you with your body and can alleviate both physical and mental tension, allowing greater freedom in both. There is no single right way but a general rule is you should feel better after exercise not worse. No one knows how this remarkable situation will pan out but its important to care for ourselves and be kind and considerate toward others in thought and deed. Take care and be well. Tim Howden ND BHSc MCMA

04.01.2022 XENO-OESTROGENS: What are They and Guidelines to Minimising Exposure Xenooestrogens are endocrine disruptors which are a category of chemicals that alter the normal function of hormones. Normally, our endocrine system releases hormones that signal different tissues telling them what to do. When chemicals from the outside get into our bodies, they have the ability to mimic our natural hormones; blocking or binding hormone receptors. Xenoestrogens are a sub-category of the en...docrine disruptor group that specifically have estrogen-like effects. Estrogen is a natural hormone in humans that is important for bone growth, blood clotting and reproduction in men and women. The body regulates the amount needed through intricate biochemical pathways. When xenoestrogens enter the body they increase the total amount of estrogen resulting in a phenomenon called, estrogen dominance. Xenoestrogens are not biodegradable so, they are stored in our fat cells. Build up of xenoestrogens have been indicated in many conditions including: breast, prostate and testicular cancer, obesity, infertility, endometriosis, early onset puberty, miscarriages and diabetes. Guidelines to minimize your personal exposure to xenoestrogens: Food - Avoid all pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. - Choose organic, locally-grown and in-season foods. - Peel non-organic fruits and vegetables. - Buy hormone-free meats and dairy products to avoid hormones and pesticides. Plastics - Reduce the use of plastics whenever possible. - Do not microwave food in plastic containers. - Avoid the use of plastic wrap to cover food for storing or microwaving. - Use glass or ceramics whenever possible to store food. - Do not leave plastic containers, especially your drinking water, in the sun. - If a plastic water container has heated up significantly, throw it away. - Dont refill plastic water bottles. - Avoid freezing water in plastic bottles to drink later. Household Products - Use chemical free, biodegradable laundry and household cleaning products. - Choose chlorine-free products and unbleached paper products (i.e. tampons, menstrual pads, toilet paper, paper towel, coffee filters). - Use a chlorine filter on shower heads and filter drinking water Health and Beauty Products - Avoid creams and cosmetics that have toxic chemicals and estrogenic ingredients such as parabens and stearalkonium chloride. - Minimize your exposure to nail polish and nail polish removers. - Use naturally based fragrances, such as essential oils. - Use chemical free soaps and toothpastes. - Read the labels on condoms and diaphragm gels. At the Office - Be aware of noxious gas such as from copiers and printers, carpets, fiberboards, and at the gas pump.

01.01.2022 Pumpkin, Black Rice and Lentil Salad A hearty and filling salad, great for winter days as you can serve it warm. Contains great sources of protein, B vitamins and iron as well as many other nutrients. Serves two. INGREDIENTS: ... 1 cup black rice 1 cup brown lentils 2 cups diced pumpkin 1 cup kale, chopped cup roasted sunflower and pumpkin seeds cup kalamata olives, sliced in halves red onion, sliced thinly Almond fetta (see recipe below- coconut yoghurt, lemon juice and salt) For the dressing: cup lemon juice 1/4 cup olive oil Garlic Dijon mustard METHOD: Dice pumpkin into small 1cm cubes, drizzle with oil and roast in oven at 200 degrees until pumpkin can be speared with a knife. Meanwhile, boil rice in hot water until soft and tender and do the same for the lentils. Add all salad ingredients to a bowl. For the salad dressing, I use Mezza Monjays garlic dip but you could also use 1 garlic clove, crushed. Add the lemon juice, olive oil and mustard and mix well. Pour over salad. Serve warm or at room temperature. To make the almond feta, soak 1 cup of almonds in hot water for about 15 minutes and then the skins should be soft and easy to pull off. Place almonds, 2 tbsp lemon juice, 2 tbsp coconut yoghurt and a pinch of salt (to taste) in a blender and blend on high until mixture has a slightly sticky consistency.
