The IPL or SHR handpiece is placed on the surface of the skin over shaved hair, when the machine is fired it sends out a flashes of strong light which is converted to heat energy, this energy is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the bulb of the hair follicle causing enough controlled damage to the follicle so it doesn't allow a hair to produce any more. So why do you need multiple treatments? ... Only the hairs in the anagen (growth) phase cycle are treated in each session which is only a certain percent at a time, it's not possible to tell which hairs are in what phase, which is why you need between 6 and 12 sessions to get a 70%- 90% reduction in 4- 6 weekly intervals. So what's the benefit of IPL/SHR in comparison to waxing?
