24.01.2022 Any ideas on what this Platypus might be doing right now? This rare species is the sole living representative of its family and can only be found along eastern Australia, including Tasmania. An interesting fact ... The platypus is one of the few species of venomous mammals. Believe it or not, the male platypus has a spur on its hind foot that can deliver venom, causing severe pain. #forthewildlife

24.01.2022 #TBT to one of @drbreetalbot’s favourite patients, Appin Jack who in 2015 was found on the road with severe damage to both his eyes and was not able to be returned to the wild. To this day, we are unclear to what exactly happened to him, but suspect he was either clipped by a car as he was crossing the road or had an unfortunate and uncommon encounter with a bird of prey. Several months of rehabilitation, he recovered from his injuries (but was unfortunately blind) and found... a new home at a koala sanctuary. Unfortunately not long after he moved there, he succumbed to another disease. Bree: I will always remember Appin Jack and how he changed the direction of my veterinary career. #forthewild

23.01.2022 FUN FACT: Eastern grey kangaroos will continue to use mum’s pouch as a cosy bedroom until they are approximately 6kg or roughly 11 months old! Do you have any fun facts about Australian wildlife you would like to share with us? #forthewildlife

23.01.2022 Freshwater turtles spend most of their life in the water only coming on land to migrate between water bodies or to nest. INTERESTING FACT: Rain is a strong indicator for Freshwater turtles to travel without the worry of drying out. Unfortunately, they aren't aware of the dangers of crossing the road and can often be run over by cars and other vehicles, mistaken as a rock or debris. ... Frequently, they will arrive at the hospital with fractures to various areas of their body and can require intensive hospitalisation and rehabilitation before being released. Lucky for this little freshie, the fractures weren't severe, and the team were able to repair and rehabilitate its shell for a safe release back into the wild! 22.01.2022 Seen here is a Welcome Swallow! Unfortunately, this little bird was brought in to Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital unable to fly Dr Bree Wildlife Vet and Hayley Corrigan assessed the bird and found that it had a severely fractured and displaced coracoid. Sadly the Welcome Swallow had to be euthanised due to the degree of displacement of the fracture. If the fracture was to heal, it was highly unlikely that it would fly again Where the fracture is not as severe, these birds c...an be rested for 4-6 weeks to heal the bone and then start physio. To give wildlife a fighting chance, you can support Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital with a donation today! #forthewildlife

Luckily, a carer brought the dragon to Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital for treatment!
