16.01.2022 Dear All, As we are aware due to the COVID-19 Pandemic the club has been closed. The Management Committee has met today to discuss if we are able to open again, with the staged lifting of restrictions. We have referred to the QLD Health websites advice on undertaking activities Non- essential Leisure & Community Clubs & social activities are not able to operate until further notice. ... The Queensland Health website provides the following; "Community facilities (such as community centres and halls, recreation centres, youth centres, community clubs, RSLs, PCYCs) Community facilities that operate community services may continue to operate to the extent they provide such services, including: Community hubs in remote communities may continue to operate if they are essential for distributing health or medical information or education to the community, with social distancing observed. Community facilities may continue to operate if they provide formal out of school hours care, with social distancing observed. Facilities may remain open for the purpose of hosting essential voluntary or public services, such as food banks or homeless services, with social distancing observed." As we do not fall under the category of offering a community service such as those listed above, the Management Committee confirm that the Cairns Gem Club will remain temporarily closed, however we will work on composing an Action Plan for when we can reopen. This Action Plan will include how and when we may open, how we manage the numbers of members able to attend at one time and a strict cleaning schedule for members attending the club to adhere to, ensuring hygiene standards are maintained. We will keep you all updated following our next meeting, in the meantime, stay safe and remember to contact Danni should anyone require any assistance. Take care, Regards Gem Club Management

10.01.2022 Our annual open day was such a fantastic day. Stall holders and members chatting to everyone on this beautiful sunny day and it was such a relaxed atmosphere. The kids screaming out in the sand sieving when they found some gems, the kids looking at our fossils and some had some amazing knowledge of their own. The sausage run to get more sausages at 1030! For the sausage sizzle. The home made cakes, scones and cupcakes went down well when they were washed down with tea and co...ffee. The demonstrations in cabbing, facetting and silver smithing highlighted the skill of our members. The members showcasing their hand made jewellery to you all. People bringing in rocks to identify. 11 new member sign ups today and a lot more coming back. All the phone and texts done to advise the prize winners. Another post will advise 1st names of winners. Thanks to all the members who assisted leading up and on the day. I am totally exhausted but in a good way , I am all raffled out. May bright and shiny things tantalise you..... See more

09.01.2022 These are some beautiful pieces of jewellery created by students who attended our intermediate silversmithing course at the Cairns Gem Club, 85 Greenslopes Street, Edge Hill, Cairns. Our courses are suitable for beginners and introduce people to the traditional silversmithing skills. They learn many different techniques such as scribing, sawing and soldering. The individual tuition will ensure that students complete a beautiful piece of jewellery with the confidence they need... to create more for themselves, to give as gifts or even sell in their own business. The course is designed for all levels and no prior knowledge is necessary. All tools and materials are supplied and included in the tuition fee.

04.01.2022 The Cairns Regional Council has given our club an incredible grant of $50,000 to extend our clubhouse to include a dedicated Jewellery Room. This is brilliant and supplemented with funds from our club we now have this fabulous area in which our members can create beautiful jewellery and also in which we can incorporate our educational training facilities. With a dedicated jewellery workshop area the club will be able to meet the growing demand of students wanting to learn and... become proficient in jewellery fabrication and metal casting in a safe environment. How great it is that during the last few months we didnt get distracted and instead continued to put our heads down and remain focused. As a result we have become a strong, combined and solid club. Due to this we are delighted to share with you the news that the new Jewellery Room extension has been completed and is debt free. A big thank you to Damien Hyde, Smith & Sons Renovations & Extensions Cairns South, for a wonderful pain free experience in building this extension. Damien, Adam and their team were very professional. There were no unexpected costs which was a great relief to the club and there were no dramas. Also a big thank you to Christl Lohrum our Architect from Bau designs Architects for giving us just what we wanted, again without drama. We are continuing the examples set by our past members when every stage of our clubhouses building growth has been debt free upon completion of that stage. We are so excited and can't wait until we are all happily working away in our new environment. Thank you once again to the Cairns City Council Arts & Cultural Infrastructure Grant committee for their wonderful support.

03.01.2022 In our lapidary/ cabbing classes you learn to cut the rock and dome etc to these polished products. Here are some of the beauties i was taught to do in my classes by Alan. The before and after green is chert and the other is agate. Its amazing the transformation of the before and after. I cannot wait to go back and learn more after my silversmith classes it is so addictive.
