25.01.2022 One seated step, two finger taps, three wide claps and BIG smiles this week as the CRANAplus Aged Care Project delivered two DanceWise demonstrations as part of... a Diversional Therapy Workshop in Mareeba. Specifically designed for residents living with all types of dementia, the sessions included brain training, memory stimulation, creative inclusion, physical activity and social interaction. One resident reported feeling 40 years younger and another showed tears of joy. In fact, the Atherton demonstration was the biggest demo class in a care facility in Australia! Dance Health Alliance CEO Gwen Korebrits and Cairns Dance Therapy Director Kathy Newman united attendees through music and stimulated residents who might have thought their days of connection and creativity were over. Even those with very limited mobility joined in proving that dance really is the hidden language of the soul. Care facility staff can be trained to run this fantastic program making it possible for services that deliver to regional, rural and remote areas across Australia. Life is a dance. 15.01.2022 Introducing Kathy Newman, our newest certified teacher who is launching DanceWise in Carins! Kathy started dancing at the age of 6, studying Modern, Ballet, Ta...p, Cheerleading and Contemporary dance styles. Having had international and professional dance experience, Kathy then graduated from the Federal Association Teachers of Dancing (FATD) and started her teaching career. Kathy has since joined the Dance Health Alliance Team and started Cairns Dance Therapy. Kathy now has the opportunity to expand her passion for dance to Aged Care Facilities and the community, offering dance classes that are dementia friendly and supportive to participants with movement restrictions. Kathy is excited to be a member of the Dance Health Alliance and launch DanceWise to Residential Aged Care Facilities in the Cairns region. #cairns #queensland #dance #dha
