21.01.2022 Did you watch Q and A last night? Very good programme and about time. Families lets support this locally. Register for the Cairns Family Bike Ride.... Former AFL star and founder of the Sunrise Foundation, Wayne Schwass, who has battled with depression, said that men were just as complex as women. Yet as a country and as a community, (men) aren’t supported, we aren’t encouraged to talk honestly and open about complex issues and we need to be, because the reality is a conversation can be the beginning of somebody getting help, getting appropriate treatment and that’s an important conversation to have, Mr Schwass said. It took 12 years after his depression diagnosis, he said, to work up the courage to sit down with his family and tell them he was unwell before going public with the information. 17.01.2022 Cairns Family Bike Ride. Is on again- 8th November! Raising vital money and for the Declan Crouch Fund. Cairns kids should never contemplate suicide as an option. But they do, Last year, 22 young people died by suicide before their 18th birthday. And we've seen the suicide of a child under the age of 10. Clearly more needs to be done. Parents, talking to your kids about mental health is as important as... conversations about physical health. If you plan to register as a family or a single rider please register soon. Without minimum numbers we can't run the event. It is a fun day out and a special cause- so please get behind it. SPECIAL- if you register by the 9th October you get a 20% discount. All funds raised goes to the Declan Crouch Fund.

04.01.2022 Hi, this is Ruth Crouch Declan's mother....I would like to say just how thrilled I am that Rotary is supporting the charity set up in his memory to tackle youth... suicide prevention. Suicide is so stigmatised, hidden and shameful, that we don't talk about, definitely don't want to think about it, and think it will never happen to us. Suicide amongst all age groups is everywhere, I think most people would be shocked to know just how common it is. In FNQ we have particularly high statistics for suicide. Throughout Australia the numbers of 10-14 yr olds who took their own lives was the highest for a decade in the year to 2013 which is shocking - our young are struggling more and more with life in this world. The Dr Edward Koch Foundation and Declan Crouch Fund are working hard to trial a youth suicide prevention workshop in Cairns high schools which has never been done in Australia. We will prove this training can be given to our kids safely. To me it is crucial and obvious. Declan told many of his friends that he was suicidal and they didn't know what to do with that information. Our kids must know to tell an adult and keep on telling till they are heard. We need to raise funds for this vital program. So please support this wonderful day out, which, to balance the sombre note of this post so far! will be heaps of fun. And help us get to grips with the big killer (about 2,300 in the year to 2013) that no one wants to talk about!
