21.01.2022 OLYMPIC STAR INSPIRES RAMSAY STAFF ON R U OK? DAY Olympic swimming champion Brooke Hanson OAM has praised the amazing work of Ramsay Health Care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, as part of an inspiring webinar to mark R U OK? Day. The national day of action encourages Australians to ask friends, family and colleagues R U OK? if someone in their world is struggling with lifes ups and downs.... Ms Hanson told the hundreds of Ramsay staff who joined the webinar, it was important people take time out for themselves and celebrate their small achievements, not only the big ones. You have all gone above and beyond during this COVID-19 pandemic and youve done so much for our country, Ms Hanson said. You wont always get credit but know that you are loved and supported by so many Australians and we wouldnt have gotten through this without you. So many times youve done fantastic things at work but you may not take time out with colleagues to pat yourselves on the back and say well done. You really need to reach out to each other and celebrate - it can just be as simple as saying hey, well done. Ms Hanson, an Olympic gold and silver medallist, world champion and former world record holder, delivered an inspirational hour-long presentation, where she spoke of the immense challenges she has faced - not only in pursuing her sporting dream but also in her private life, with the loss of her second child Jack at just nine months old. There have been times where I havent been ok, the 42 year old said. I held my son Jack for his last breath and it showed me how precious and short life can be. Id give all my Olympic achievements, all those medals, away if I could have just one more cuddle with my little man. We had to say goodbye to him and that was the saddest day of my life, Ms Hanson said. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well. Were all going to struggle with mental health at some point and we all have to conquer and support each other. Its why R U OK? Day is so important. Ms Hanson spoke of the importance of self-love and self-care - which included a healthy diet, exercise and getting plenty of sleep. Its one of those magical things, exercise, healthy living and eating can make a big difference, she said. The link to Ms Hansons powerful webinar will be available to the Ramsay workforce on the intranet to watch at a time convenient for them. She has also written a book, When Silver is Gold, with all profits from the sale of each copy donated to Lifes Little Treasures Foundation in memory of her son Jack.

19.01.2022 Listen with an open mind If you are concerned about someone, trust your gut and ask, Are you OK?. Listen with an open mind to what they have to say and ask them what you can do to help. In the current circumstances, there might be limits on what you can do but you can definitely be a listening ear and a (virtual) shoulder to lean on. Take what they say seriously and dont interrupt or rush the conversation.... Dont judge their experiences or reactions but acknowledge that things seem tough for them. If they need time to think, sit patiently with the silence. Encourage them to explain: "How are you feeling about that?" or "How long have you felt that way?" Show that youve listened by repeating back what youve heard (in your own words) and ask if you have understood them properly. https://rmsyhc.com/2ZdlFdl

18.01.2022 CAIRNS PRIVATE HOSPITAL GOES SILLY FOR A SERIOUS CAUSE Doctors and staff at Cairns Private Hospital Maternity Unit will be sporting big, bright red noses this Friday to mark Red Nose Day. Held annually since 1988, Red Nose Day has helped save the lives of more than 10,000 Australian babies and children, by teaching parents safe sleeping techniques.... However sadly, nine Australian children still die suddenly and unexpectedly every day. Cairns Private Hospital paediatrician Dr Tim Warnock said while incredible strides had been made in reducing Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), parents cannot be complacent. This is an opportunity to continue to educate parents on safe sleeping habits for their children and thats why, even 30 years on, Red Nose Day is still so important, Dr Warnock said. The Back to Sleep message is crucial for all parents because when the numbers go down everybody thinks there isnt an issue, but children are still dying from SIDS every day. Dr Warnock said many cases of SIDS occurred when exhausted parents co-sleep with their babies in a desperate attempt to get more sleep. The message is clear, dont do it. Dont resort to it because unfortunately it becomes the quick fix and in many cases the quick fix will be safe and without complications, but there will be those that end in disaster, Dr Warnock said. Cairns Private Hospital is proud to support Red Nose Day because we need to make sure the safe sleeping message gets out there. Red Nose is Australias leading authority on safe sleep and safe pregnancy, and bereavement support for families affected by the death a child. Money raised from Red Nose Day helps to provide safe sleeping education, research and bereavement support services.

15.01.2022 - RAMSAY LAUNCHES NEW COVID-19 SCREENING TOOL - Ramsay Health Care is launching a new smartphone tool to streamline the COVID-19 screening process for visitors, patients and health care workers at its Australian hospitals, clinics and day surgeries. The robust screening system requires a person to scan a unique QR code using the camera function on their smartphone before they enter the facility. ... They will be asked to answer some simple questions about any possible exposure to COVID-19, including: Have you ever been diagnosed with COVID-19? Have you been in contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case in the past 14 days? Have you been formally identified as a close contact of a confirmed case? Are you unwell with any cold or flu-like symptoms including: fevers, cough, vomiting, diarrhoea, night sweats or chills, or acute respiratory infection including cough shortness of breath or sore throat? Have you travelled overseas in the past 14 days? Once they have answered all questions, their phone will display either a green or amber colour: If the scan returns a green colour, the person can show a Ramsay staff member their result and enter the facility. If the scan returns an amber colour, the person will need to speak to a staff member to determine why they have received that result and whether it is safe for them to enter the facility. The screening tool is designed to help stop the spread of COVID-19, minimise disruptions and streamline the entry process for patients, visitors, doctors and staff alike. Previously patients and visitors had to be individually interviewed at each Ramsay facility about their possible exposure to COVID-19, and this had unfortunately led to some delays. Ramsays IT team has been working hard to roll out the technology quickly, given the recent spike in COVID-19 cases, particularly in Victoria and New South Wales. The questions and instructions are also currently being translated into five other languages to assist people for whom English is not their first language. They are: Chinese, French, Arabic, Vietnamese and Italian. The COVID-19 screening tool is also a great asset for Ramsay Health Care heading into the future, with visitor numbers expected to increase as elective surgery capacity improves. Each Ramsay facility across the country will have its own unique QR scan code and patient and visitor data will be stored safely and securely. The QR code will be displayed on signage outside the entry points of all Ramsay facilities.

14.01.2022 Sleep Awareness Week draws attention to the importance of sleep as a vital component of a healthy lifestyle. Everyone deserves a good nights rest, so you can wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day. Unfortunately, sometimes it can be hard to get that good nights sleep, which can cause undue stress and fatigue. Top Tip ... Getting into a regular bedtime pattern can help your body set its internal body clock. Going to bed at a regular time will let your body acclimatise to a pattern, meaning that youll likely get naturally sleepy at a specific time and start waking up at a consistent time. The amount of sleep you need to properly function will be somewhere in the range of 6 to 8 hours, so its best to work with what you feel is best for your body and plan your sleep schedule around that. The more often you keep to your sleep schedule, the more likely it is that youll achieve a night of restful sleep.

13.01.2022 CHECK-IN The coronavirus pandemic comes as many Australians are still feeling the impact of recent bushfires, floods and drought. Its very normal to not feel OK in challenging times such as these. Watching and listening to media and social media coverage and commentary can be confronting and confusing. However, at a time when were being asked to physically distance ourselves from one another, we can make use of freed up diary time and our digital devices to stay connected.... Pop a reminder in your diary to call them in a couple of weeks. If theyre really struggling, follow up with them sooner. You could say: "Ive been thinking of you and wanted to know how youve been going since we last chatted." Ask if theyve found a better way to manage the situation. If they havent done anything, dont judge them. They might just need someone to listen to them for the moment. Stay in touch and be there for them. Genuine care and concern can make a real difference.

09.01.2022 Sleep Awareness Week 2020 Everyones experienced the fatigue, restlessness and lack of focus that often follow a poor nights sleep. A good nights sleep is vital for good health as it allows our bodies to repair themselves and our brains to consolidate our memories and process information. Top Tip - Wind down before you go to bed... The act of relaxing and winding down before going to sleep is an important step in the process of going to bed. Not only can certain actions be incorporated into your routine to tell your body its time to sleep, such as stretching or gentle yoga routines, but the activities themselves can help you to chill out. Organising your thoughts and putting them down on a to-do list or weekly planner can help you clear your mind of worries or concerns, or even just setting an alarm on your phone with a label to remind you to do something urgent. Reading a book, listing to calming music or a podcast can also lull you to sleep by taking your mind off of things and get your brain going as you fall into a deep sleep. It could even stop you worrying about whether youre going to get to sleep! #ramsayhealth #sleepbetter #sleepinCOVID19 #sleepawarenessweek #sleepandmentalhealth #SAW2020 #SleepAwarenessWeek
09.01.2022 STEP UP YOUR EXERCISE FOR WORLD OSTEOPOROSIS DAY Cairns Private Hospital is urging local residents to give their exercise regime a check-up as part of World Osteoporosis Day. Held on October 20th each year, World Osteoporosis Day aims to raise global awareness of the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis - a condition where bones become thin, weak and fragile. As a result, even a minor bump or accident can cause a broken bone.... Rehabilitation Physician at Cairns Private Hospital, Dr Dragana Urosevic said regular physical exercise was important for people of all ages, not only to prevent osteoporosis in the first place but to help treat the condition once someone is diagnosed. Exercise is very important to prevent osteoporosis because it will increase endurance, strengthen the muscles and increase the tendon elasticity which is vital when trying to reduce the risk of falls, Dr Urosevic said. Even once a person is diagnosed with osteoporosis, exercise is still a really important part of their rehabilitation. The approach will be different for each person but we will come up with a program specifically designed for their needs. The ability of an exercise to build the bone is called osteogenic capacity and it depends on the specific way that the stress is applied to the bone during the exercise. High impact exercises such as running, impact aerobics and gymnastics are more osteogenic but may be too hard for the elderly population, Dr Urosevic explained. Moderate to light impact exercises would be better for them, such as resistance training, stair climbing, dancing, pilates and tai chi. It’s all about improving someone’s balance to help reduce falls and increase their confidence so that they can lead a normal life despite osteoporosis. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, an estimated 924,000 Australians are living with osteoporosis. It is most common in older women, affecting 29% over the age of 75, compared with 10% of men. Cairns Private Hospital offers a dedicated Reconditioning Rehabilitation Program for patients diagnosed with osteoporosis. As we age the risk of osteoporosis increases so we need to increase a person’s confidence in their daily activities and mobility, Dr Urosevic said. "If they’re having falls they will inadvertently lose their confidence so we aim to improve their balance and strength and we teach them falls prevention as well.

02.01.2022 Its that time of year. The weather is getting colder, and the mountains are calling. But injury can put you out of commission here are four top tips on how to stay safe on the slopes all this winter. Cardio Take time to improve your cardiovascular system before heading out to the slopes to increase your skiing stamina. This could include taking the stairs instead of the lift or escalator or going for a run, jog, cycle or stepping for twenty minutes a few times a week. Stre...ngth Exercise your hip gluteals using the classic clam exercise where you lie on your side with your hips and knees in a skiing position, and keeping your ankles together you lift your top knee, like a clam opening and closing. Biomechanics Work on your neutral pelvis position, when your bottom is not too tucked under or sticking out too far. This position allows your muscles to work better. You can practice bending your knees into a skiing position while maintaining pelvic neutrality for 30 reps every day until it feels natural. Warm up A warm-up is one of the essential parts of an exercise program. It not only prepares your body for more strenuous activity but it also helps to prevent injury to muscles that are more susceptible to injury when cold.
01.01.2022 - DONT SUGAR COAT IT THIS NATIONAL DIABETES WEEK - A leading Cairns endocrinologist is urging North Queenslanders not to sugar coat diabetes, and get tested for the disease this National Diabetes Week. Dr Luke Conway, a Specialist Endocrinologist at Cairns Private Hospital said 500,000 Australians are currently living with undiagnosed diabetes, yet delays in diagnosis and treatment can cause irreversible complications.... My message is simple, when it comes to diabetes dont sugar coat it, see your GP and get tested because a little prick could save your life, Dr Conway said. I know some people take better care of their car than their own health and we need to change that. Diabetes is an insidious, silent killer and many people may initially have no symptoms or signs for months or years, so its important to get checked out. According to Diabetes Australia, every year 640 children and adults are admitted to hospital because the early warning signs of type 1 diabetes are missed. If not diagnosed in time, type 1 diabetes can be fatal. This year National Diabetes Week is being held from 12th - 18th July with a focus on supporting the emotional and mental health wellbeing of people living with diabetes. Living with diabetes can sometimes feel like a full time job and we know people living with the condition are at an increased risk of depression and anxiety, Dr Conway said. Its important that patients dont neglect their mental health and its also important to have a superstar team cheering you on. For those already living with diabetes, Dr Conway said they should stay in regular contact with their GP or endocrinologist to take advantage of advancements in technology that can help manage their condition. There are now fantastic diabetes treatment options including subsidised medications that only need to be given once per week that will help with not only getting your blood glucose on target but also weight loss, Dr Conway said. Patients under the age of 21 or have a health care card can also access continuous glucose monitoring devices or free. Theyre small sensors, about the size of a 20 cent piece, that can make life much easier for patients to keep their glucose on target. Doctor Conway said its important people maintain a healthy lifestyle to avoid developing type 1 or type 2 diabetes. Be physically active. The best activity is the one that you enjoy and gets you moving.
