23.01.2022 Western Australia is the latest state to announce their plan to address single-use plastics! The WA State Government’s ‘Plan for Plastics’ includes the phase-out of single-use plastic items such as cutlery, plates, stirrers, straws, thick plastic bags, polystyrene food containers and helium balloon releases over the next three years. After these initial actions, plastic barrier/produce bags, cotton buds with plastic shafts, polystyrene packaging, microbeads, and oxo-degradabl...e plastics (plastics designed to break up into fragments at a faster rate) will be phased out. The plan also includes actions on prepacked fruit and vegetables, takeaway food containers and plastic packaging - swift action on plastic packaging needs to be a priority for all governments! "The time to act is now; plastic pollution is one of the greatest threats to wildlife around the world and, in 2018-19, only 11 per cent of Australia's plastic waste was recycled with 89 per cent sent to landfill, said WA Environment Minister Stephen Dawson. Sea Shepherd would like to acknowledge the hundreds of supporters who put forward submissions and took the on-line survey during the community consultation on the single-use plastics issues paper in 2019, which has shaped the content of the Plastics Plan. 98% of respondents were strongly in favour of actions to reduce the impacts of single-use plastics, including 98.63% of people (like us!) concerned that plastic litter is harming our wildlife with 98.61% stating that plastics end up polluting our waterways and oceans. Since 2015, Sea Shepherd beach clean-ups in WA have shown the west coast has a problem with plastic - we've removed over ONE MILLION pieces of trash in WA alone, with 75-80% being plastic. The initiatives in the WA Plastics Plan is one part of the journey all West Aussies need to do to help address the increasing use of plastic, waste and pollution on the beaches. Every state in Australia should have legislation to ban problem plastics

22.01.2022 Shark Nets Return in NSW While there have been no whale entanglements in NSW shark nets and drumlines so far this year, the state-sponsored killing of other marine animals is now inevitable. From September 1, shark nets were due to be re-deployed off 51 beaches in Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong, having been removed for the past four months because of the whale migration season. Since the first nets were installed in NSW in the 1930’s, tens of thousands of animals have died..., often after prolonged suffering. During the eight months of the last net season, 284 animals were killed in entanglement, including: . 14 critically endangered grey nurse sharks, . 8 green turtles and, . 7 dolphins. Of the 480 creatures caught in the nets, a staggering 430 of them were non-target species. Despite NSW enacting the world’s first shark protection law in 1984 to stop the killing of grey nurse sharks, the last netting season saw 31 of these critically endangered animals entangled and struggling in the nets with 14 of them dying a painful death. 17 were released, fate unknown. Sea Shepherd believes this toll of marine wildlife is totally unacceptable and calls on the government to remove the nets permanently. They do not protect surfers and swimmers from shark interactions and, if anything, only offer a false sense of security. There are more modern and more effective methods of shark mitigation, and the government, recognising this, is to be commended for its upcoming program of drone surveillance at NSW beaches. With new technologies such as the drones being used by the NSW Government, shark nets have become redundant. They belong to a by-gone era and it’s time they were disposed of. 21.01.2022 Here's a powerful message from Sea Shepherd Advisor and Mirning Elder Bunna Lawrie about the importance of protecting the Bight this #ThreatenedSpeciesDay: "Our... people have kept the balance and the harmony in the Great Australian Bight for over 65,000 years and more. This is why there is still so much diversity and amazing life in our sea country - a refuge and home for many of the World’s threatened species. Once there was whaling and our Mirning people fought against it to protect our totem family. Now the Southern right whales, the humpbacks and even the blue whales have returned in growing numbers. Sadly, it is a different story for the Northern right whales in their country. It is important for us to continue this traditional knowledge and wisdom. We wish to teach other people how to protect our Great Australian Bight and all that lives in it. Together we can continue to keep this beautiful balance in our pristine ocean. We are currently fighting to have our transitional custodianship acknowledged, so that this is not also threatened. Please be a Caretaker for the Bight and join us: https://bit.ly/32TlRjf" #FightForTheBight

20.01.2022 A new study by Dr Andrew Colefax shows SMART drumlines do not prevent sharks moving near to surf breaks. It also found that acoustic receivers often detect sharks that do not move closer to shore. We need modern shark bite mitigation solutions that protect swimmers, surfers, divers and marine life too. 20.01.2022 With your support, we have just expanded our international marine conservation efforts, launching a critical new collaboration with Conflict Islands Conservatio...n Initiative (CICI) and Animal Assist to protect endangered turtles from poaching in the Conflict Islands in Papua New Guinea. This atoll is known as one of Sylvia Earle’s Hope Spots and is an important nesting site for hawksbill and green sea turtles. Without the support in these difficult times from organisations such as Sea Shepherd and Animal Assist, we would not be able to continue our critical work to protect wildlife and conserve our wild places - CICI’s Operations Manager Hayley Versace. 14.01.2022 Turtles are in trouble and our recent clean up at Moreton Island has again shown the deadly impact plastic pollution and discarded fishing gear is having in the... area. Over the last two years when Sea Shepherd MD teams visited the island to conduct a clean up, they documented 13 dead turtles and one that they were able to rescue which was taken for rehabilitation. Sadly, this year the crew were shocked to see a turtle stuck in a crab pot washed up on the shore line.
