24.01.2022 It was a long journey in 1885 from the dark slums of nineteenth century industrial England to the sunny shores and oppressive heat of Sydney. Six pioneering Sisters immediately set to work nursing the sick, running a soup kitchen, a night refuge, a school for the visually impaired, a parish school and providing social services to those in need. Soon they would establish the first of many hospitals on our shores. These were the indomitable women of the Sisters of the Little Co...mpany of Mary who’s pioneering spirit of being for others started an approach to caring for the sick, the dying and those in need that was to grow and expand across the country. We are Calvary Health Care. Today, we celebrate 135 years since the Sisters sailed into Sydney, and the legacy they have left us all.

22.01.2022 20 October is "Drop the Jargon" day So that we never again move forward to be on the same page but rather come together in agreement in the future, let’s pledge to #dropthejargon today Use plain language in all communication with other staff and with clients... Do Not use acronyms Explain medical and other technical terminology Check that information has been understood by your clients Work with a professional interpreter when your clients have low English proficiency Politely point out when your colleagues use jargon https://www.dropthejargon.org.au/

22.01.2022 It’s been quite a journey Motor Neurone Disease Association of Victoria. And long may it continue.

19.01.2022 In late July we kicked off a ‘Staying Connected Program’ as a pilot initiative in response to an identified need in our inpatient unit. We know that maintaining social connections is protective to health and vital to wellbeing and resilience and our objective was to reduce the social isolation commonly experienced by patients during their hospital stay, which has been more challenging than ever before due to COVID-19. We put together a team consisting of tech support, diver...sional therapists and admin support, who work very closely with our usual healthcare team. Patients are given daily 1:1 support to solve everyday ‘tech’ issues, assist with video calls to family and friends, improve digital literacy, access online resources, participate or watch online arts and cultural events and experience a range of diversional activities suited to their personal interests. Technology has been vital to this popular program and our hospital ipads are in constant use by our inpatients. If anyone has an unused/unwanted ipad you are interested in donating, please get in touch! Email: [email protected] See more

18.01.2022 In good times and in bad, pastoral carers in Calvary’s hospitals, retirement communities and aged care services quietly go about their mission to care for patients’ and residents’ spiritual needs. It’s been especially challenging this year and never more important to find hope and meaning in daily life. The men and women in our pastoral care teams across the country are an important part of our holistic and interdisciplinary approach to care and during Pastoral Care Week (2...5-31 October) we celebrate their significant contribution. Glen Renton is an integral part of the care team at Calvary Ryde Retirement Community and shares a special connection with residents. It’s my job to make sure that their spiritual needs are met. I just want to make sure everyone’s okay, and they are enjoying life as they should. If I can make them smile for the day, I’ve done my job. You can read more about Glen’s story at https://bit.ly/2TkPcPg

15.01.2022 "I know my condition and that my time is short, but I can't speak highly enough of my time here and how even after a short time here it feels like a family. Nothing seems to be a problem and all go above and beyond." Bethlehem patient Mark Culbert is a character. A quick wit with a ready smile he has staff hanging off his every word. You would not know that he has advanced cancer. Unfortunately Mark's prognosis meant that he was unlikely to be able to attend his daughter Kir...sty’s wedding so the family wanted to bring it forward. And quickly. Staff at Bethlehem jumped at the chance to organise it. Kicking into action, within a day last week, the Day Centre at our Parkdale site had been converted into a wedding venue with flowers, ribbons and decorations organised. Mark's daughter was married last Saturday with Mark and family in attendance. Mark said he couldn't believe it "The work they did off their own backs, the extra effort, to be honest had me as a grown man of 53 in tears." he said. "To be able to see my daughter get married will be one of the highlights of my life and it was done here in a day. There are no words to say thank you enough for all they have done. I will remember this for the rest of my life as will my children and how much happiness this gave all of us." We were so happy to have been able to make the day special for you and your family Mark.

10.01.2022 Work is underway on the $154 million Calvary Bethlehem Health and Retirement Precinct in Melbourne. The integrated development will bring retirement living, community care, GPs, other primary health care services, residential care, and Calvary Bethlehem’s existing specialist care services together in one location. It will support residents to continue living in their community as they age and as their care needs change.... The precinct is being built on the site of the former Calvary Bethlehem hospital in Caulfield South. Construction is expected to be completed in late 2022 and will create about 300 jobs. Aiming to take away some of the intimidation, fear and scariness that death holds for some. Death over Dinner was launched as a non-threatening, casual way to breach the subject with those you love. If we talk about what’s important and we live a full and meaningful life up until death, then maybe death isn’t quite so scary. See more

03.01.2022 During NAIDOC Week 2020 (8-15 November) celebrations are held across Australia each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years. NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. The 2020 NAIDOC Week theme Always Was, Always Will Be acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islan...der cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. As part of Calvary’s own journey of reconciliation, we commissioned Thomas Croft, a Barngarla man, born in Whyalla, South Australia, to create a design to remind us of the centrality of the importance of reconciliation, community and care. The image reminds us that we heal when we celebrate our First Peoples as a river offering life to our communities.
