25.01.2022 This photo is a devastating example of why people must ensure they don't leave flammable items too close to heaters and fire places. Crews from Franklin and Huo...nville were called to a fire just after 1:30pm yesterday to find this two bedroom home engulfed in flames and collapsed on the ground. Fire investigators this morning determined that clothing and other flammable items had been left too close to a woodheater and caught alight. Tasmania Fire Service responds to over 350 house fires each year, with heating being the second most common cause. When heaters are on and fireplaces are lit, flammable items must be kept at least two metres away. For information about how to keep safe in your home this winter visit the Tasmania Fire Service website: http://www.fire.tas.gov.au/Show?pageId=colHomeFireSafety #twometresfromtheheater

25.01.2022 Update 5pm: Fire investigators have determined that a fire at Nyrstar overnight was caused by a technical electrical issue. Earlier:... TFS fire investigators are at Nyrstar's Lutana site this morning to determine what caused a fire in the cell room overnight. TFS was alerted to the fire just before 12:30am. When they arrived, they located fire in the roof and wall space of the high voltage cell room, where the power has been turned off to allow for firefighting in the area. It took five crews, totalling 20 firefighters, about an hour to bring the fire under control and they remained on scene overnight to ensure any flare ups were quickly controlled. The investigation into the cause is expected to be complex and take some time due to the nature of the building and the safety precautions required on site.

16.01.2022 Thank you to Seasonal Fire Crew Today we farewell our seasonal firefighters for another year. Our seasonal firefighters started work with PWS in October last ...year. During the season, many were deployed to New South Wales to assist with the firefighting effort during the bushfire crisis. They worked in challenging conditions, away from family and friends, and often in remote locations. We also saw them involved in the firefighting effort here in Tasmania, where 35 fires were active on reserved land. They also supported the Statewide Fuel Reduction Program undertaking preparation works and fuel reduction burning activities around the state. Join us in thanking them for their efforts and a fantastic season. All the hard work and long hours are much appreciated. We hope to see you all back next season. 11.01.2022 An important winter message from Tasmania Fire Service.

10.01.2022 Winter is almost upon us. The likelihood of accidental house fires increases with people spending more time at home. Some tips to keep you and your family safe:... Install smoke alarms in every bedroom and hallway. Have a home fire escape plan that you practice with your whole family. Dust and test your smoke alarm once a month. Clean your clothes dryer filter after each use and always run it until the end of the cool down cycle. Keep everything two metres from the heater. Have your chimney and flue professionally cleaned annually. Never leave cooking unattended. Turn your electric blanket off when you get into bed. Use your wheat bag according to manufacturers instructions and never overheat in the microwave. Stay safe and visit www.fire.tas.gov.au for more information on how to stay fire safe.

08.01.2022 At TFS, we share many values and common ideals with our servicemen and women. Today at dawn we paused to remember all those who have served our nation. Like ...many other Australians I have a personal connection to the ANZACs as my grandfather was one of the Aussie diggers who landed on ANZAC Cove in 1915, said TFS Chief Officer Chris Arnol. I always think of him at our dawn services. Lest We Forget.

06.01.2022 SMOKE ALARM SAVES RESIDENTS FROM HOUSE FIRE **** Tasmania Fire Service responded to a Structure Fire at Waterfall Bay Road, Eaglehawk Neck shortly after 3:00am ...Saturday morning (9/5/2020). Volunteer crews from Eaglehawk Neck, Koonya, Nubeena and Port Arthur arrived to find the building fully engulfed. Fortunately, the residents had been alerted by a working smoke alarm and were able to evacuate their home safely and call triple zero. Crews worked hard to bring the fire under control before fully extinguishing the structure. A formal fire investigation was conducted and the cause of the fire was deemed to be accidental. The estimated damage is around $450,000. As winter approaches, this is a timely reminder that only working smoke alarms save lives.

03.01.2022 A fire that destroyed a house on the Lyell Highway at Hayes last night was caused by a build-up of birds nests in a wall cavity near a wood heater flue. Crews f...rom New Norfolk and Magra were called to the fire just after 6pm to find the roofspace fully engulfed in flames. The owners of the property were alerted to the fire by their dogs barking and were able to escape unharmed before calling triple zero. "At this time of year, TFS encourages property owners to conduct maintenance on their chimneys and flues, and this includes checking the area under the eaves and in the roofspace to ensure there is nothing flammable that can catch alight," said Regional Fire Investigator Station Officer Adam Doran. The brick cottage style two bedroom house had working smoke alarms and the damaged is estimated to be $300,000.
